Chapter 26 The third section of Lin Huiyin's death

Just one day before Liang Siyong's death, Lin Huiyin, who was the same age as him, died of illness in Beijing Hospital on April 1, 1955. After the victory of the Anti-Japanese War, various agencies of the Nationalist Government were preparing to be demobilized. The China Academy of Architecture, which was actually presided over by Liang Sicheng and Lin Huiyin in Lizhuang, faced two choices due to the cut-off of funding sources. On the top of a heavyweight mountain, set up departments and institutes in Tsinghua Park, and strive to create a piece of land of our own in order to gain a firm foothold and create brilliance; the second is to completely merge the headquarters with the Central Museum Preparatory Office (South Press: For the sake of rice bowls, Liang Sicheng et The staff quota is under the name of Zhongbo), and Liang Sicheng will serve as the director of the Preparatory Office of the Central Museum to lead the overall situation and create another world. After a while of deliberation, Liang and Lin finally chose to go to Tsinghua University.Regarding this matter, Li Ji later mentioned it in a letter to Fei Weimei.Li said: "After the Second World War, I decided to resign as the director of the Preparatory Office of the Central Museum. At that time, I recommended Sicheng to take up the post, but he did not accept it. Hang Liwu took up the post after me."

In terms of conditions and personal feelings at the time, Liang and Lin naturally preferred Tsinghua University, because after the demobilization, the Preparatory Office of Zhongbo University was located in Nanjing, the capital of the Nationalist Government, while Tsinghua University was located in Beiping.Nanjing has little to do with the Liang and Lin couples, while Beiping is the place where their predecessors and the whole family live, sit and lie here. The historical imprints of the Liang and Lin families are engraved here, and Liang Sicheng and Lin Huiyin's respective youth and dreams. There is an unforgettable "wife's living room" in Peking, as well as hard-core friends cultivated in the living room, such as Zhang Xiruo, Qian Duansheng, Lao Jin, Chen Daisun, Zhou Peiyuan and so on.And all these warm and beautiful memories have never existed in the capital Nanjing, and it will be difficult to have them again in the future. As Lin Huiyin said in a letter to Fei Weimei in Kunming after the war: "We are far away from our homeland and meet in a place where we have to live because of the situation. I long to return to the happiest time in our lives. Just like people in the Tang Dynasty miss Chang'an, and people in the Song Dynasty miss Bianjing."

It was based on such a psychological complex that Liang Sicheng wrote to Mei Yiqi as early as March 9, before the victory of the Anti-Japanese War, suggesting that Tsinghua University should add a department of architecture and establish a school of architecture after the war.Mei Yiqi accepted this suggestion and planned to hire Liang as the head of the Department of Architecture.According to Mei's vision, after the war, Tsinghua University would not only add the Department of Architecture, but also the Department of Archaeological Anthropology, Department of Linguistic Anthropology, and other departments, and wanted to poach several generals Fu Sinian from Tsinghua, such as Chen Yinke and Zhao Yuanren. , Li Ji, and Li Fanggui, who was born in Tsinghua University, and other heavyweight academic masters, were all recruited under their own banner to redisplay the majesty and power of the Tsinghua Research Institute. Long Feng Youlan can be seen from the letter written by Kunming United University to Li Ji.The letter said: "I would like to send the letter of appointment from Tsinghua University, and I beg to throw down the letter of application as a gesture of gratitude. Brother's homework is always limited to archaeology and anthropology... The head of the Department of Customs at Tsinghua University has the most important responsibilities. The head of the Department of Linguistic Anthropology The position will be decided upon the arrival of Fang Gui, Yuan Ren and the elder brothers." To Ling Mei and Feng's great regret, this plan failed to be realized in the end, and Li Fanggui and Zhao Yuanren stayed in the United States and failed to return. Li Ji stayed at the Institute of History and Philology of the Nanjing Academia Sinica, and only Chen Yinke, who was blind, returned to the hometown of Tsinghua University in his memory.

Like all the intellectuals who left their hometowns, Lin Huiyin was very pleasantly surprised by the victory of the Anti-Japanese War. However, due to the eight years of chaos, long-term exile in a foreign land, and continuous suffering from illness and poverty, Lin Huiyin was haggard and old even though he was in his prime at this time. , like a candle in the wind, the last flame is about to go out. In the early autumn of 1945, Mrs. Lin wrote to Fei Weimei in Chongqing in Lizhuang about her illness: "What bothers me is that it is worse than before, especially the severe pain in the bladder area, which may have been severe."

Even in the torment of this kind of illness, Lin Huiyin still did not give up her academic pursuit and thinking, and insisted on finishing her long-awaited academic paper "Reference of Modern Housing" before being demobilized. Volume 7, Issue 2 published. At the same time, as the editor-in-chief of this issue of "Hui Kan", Lin Huiyin pointed out in the "Editor's Note": "During the post-war demobilization period, housing will be one of the important issues in people's livelihood." This very forward-looking The academic point of view was quickly fulfilled.

At the beginning of November 1945, when the dry season was approaching, Lin Huiyin, accompanied by Liang Sicheng, came to Chongqing by riverboat and stayed in the Guest House of Academia Sinica, Juxing Village, Shangqing Temple, preparing for physical examination and medical treatment. This is Lin Huiyin's first trip since she was in exile in Lizhuang for more than five years. Since then, she has left this ancient riverside town that she will never forget forever. Lin Huiyin came to Chongqing and was warmly cared for by Fu Sinian and others. With the help of his friend Fei Weimei, Liang Sicheng invited Leo Eloesser, a famous American thoracic surgeon who served in Chongqing China Rehabilitation and Relief Administration. Checked it out.Elousel concluded that Lin Huiyin's two lungs and one kidney were infected, and within a few years, at most five years, he would come to the end of his life.

During this period, news spread that Lin Huiyin died of illness.Li Jianwu, a writer who lived in seclusion in Shanghai during the Japanese Occupation, learned of the bad news, and published an article "Ji Hua Ji Yu Untitled" in "Wen Wei Po", expressing his longing for Lin Huiyin and three other female writers. The article said: "Among modern Chinese women, there are four who have broken my heart with their works. I don't want to regard them as popular 'female writers', because insulting them is tantamount to hurting my respect. It seems that the four styles , blowing from four directions, they come from different social corners, with different traditions and individual environments, so their reactions and influences cannot be consistent, and sometimes they may be completely opposite. A Ding Ling who came out of the old ethics, beautiful Destiny is always running forward with her enthusiasm; one is the gentle and elegant Ling Shuhua, who loves her daughter like a missionary and tells stories to her daughter like a missionary; the other is Lin Huiyin who is always betrayed by talent , as if all the historical and versatile beauties, hard fate has driven her enthusiasm into the cold; the last one is the most pitiful, like a bud, hoping to grow into a big tree, but the worm has bit the root and has been struggling I’m talking about Xiao Hong who has been confirmed dead.” He also said: “However, the four writers I mentioned above are dead (it is said that Lin Huiyin died of tuberculosis just like Xiao Hong), and they are alive... ... Lin Huiyin's intelligence and arrogance cut off the distance between her and ordinary people."

Not long after this article was published, Li Jianwu learned that Lin Huiyin was still alive, and he was pleasantly surprised and wrote another article titled Lin Huiyin to express his gratitude and respect. The article said: "For a full spring, I inquired about Ms. Lin Huiyin when I met everyone. They said that she suffered from lung disease and died in a small hotel in Chongqing. The situation seemed to be very bad. I even asked strangers. They laughed at me for being confused. .In the end, it seemed that God intended to comfort me, a distant person, when a friend suddenly wrote a letter, talking about her recent situation. It turned out that her illness was true, but her death was a misrepresentation. A heavy love has been lost in half.”

When Li Jianwu published this article, the Fairbanks and his wife, who had been transferred to work in the press office of the US embassy in China after the war, invited Lin Huiyin to live in the United States for a long time and receive medical treatment. You politely declined. On February 15, 1946, Lin Huiyin flew to Kunming to recuperate, and met her old friends from Tsinghua University Zhang Xiruo, Qian Duansheng, Lao Jin and others who she missed day and night at Zhang Xiruo's home. In his letter to Fei Weimei, he said, "The sudden gathering in this eventful year made everyone full of gratitude and excitement. Only now did I understand that when those poets in the Tang and Song Dynasties who lacked travel tools were on the way to relegation, The joy of meeting friends unexpectedly in some inn or boat, or somewhere in a temple where monks entertain, and how they will confided in a long conversation!" And he said: "Our time may be the same as They are different, but this reunion is very similar. We are all old, have experienced poverty and sickness, endured a long war and the isolation of news, and now we are facing a great national rise and a difficult future... We My body has been seriously injured, but our faith remains the same." Although Lin Huiyin was suffering from illness at this time, there was still a passion and spirit that was as stubborn as it was strong in these poetic lines.Just like Lin Huiyin's family left Beiping and embarked on the road of exile, Lin Huiyin always had a strong and victorious belief in the prospects of China in the war and the future of the entire nation. Her letter to Fei Weimei was exactly this belief and psychology true portrayal.

Lin Huiyin continued to recuperate with friends in Kunming, while Liang Sicheng returned to Lizhuang ahead of schedule due to demobilization matters, and wrote the last part of his English version "History of Chinese Architecture in Images".This work, which witnessed the author's suffering in exile and the history of the nation's war of resistance, was finally completed before demobilization.Liang Sicheng wrote affectionately in the "Preface": Finally, I would like to thank my wife, colleague and former classmate Lin Huiyin. For more than two decades, she has been a tireless contributor to our common cause. From the days when we were students in the architecture department of the university, we have "done hard work" for each other.Later, she accompanied me in most of the actual investigations, made many important discoveries, and carried out actual measurements and sketches of many buildings. In recent years, despite serious illnesses, she has retained her natural agility and perseverance. It is largely to her that the academic spirit and morale of the Constructive Society were maintained during the difficult days of the war.Without her cooperation and inspiration, neither the writing of this book nor any of my research work on Chinese architecture would be possible.

This "preface" is a husband's praise to his wife, and it is also an independent scholar's sincere gratitude to another scholar and colleague. At the beginning of July of this year, Lin Huiyin and Liang Sicheng gathered in Chongqing from Kunming and Lizhuang respectively, and visited Mei Yiqi who was handling demobilization matters here, and discussed in detail the work plan after demobilization. On July 31, after waiting anxiously for nearly a month, Liang, Lin, his wife, Jin Yuelin and other Tsinghua professors flew from Chongqing to Peiping on a special plane chartered by Southwest Associated University, and set foot on their hometown after nine years of separation. The Liangs, Mr. and Mrs. Lao Jin and others who returned to Peiping temporarily stayed at the reception desk for the demobilized teachers and staff of the Southwest Associated University, Congress Street, within Xuanwumen.Returning to Peiping this time, it is inevitable that there will be a sense of "the country is broken and the mountains and rivers are there, and the city is full of spring and vegetation".Thinking back to Beiping nine years ago, at almost the same moment, General He Jifeng, who followed the retreat of the Kuomintang army, faced the fallen Peiping and the young students who followed him and shouted: "Peking—we will come back again!" !” The heroic oath.Unexpectedly, when Youhu really came back, it had already been nine years.Facing the familiar yet unfamiliar ancient city and old land, Liang, Lin, Mr. and Mrs. Lao Jin and other Tsinghua professors burst into tears of bitterness in their excitement. As Liang Congjie said: "Mother loves Peiping. She spent her best youth here. Her early poems, literary works and academic articles are all related to Peking. Nine years of ups and downs have devoured Her youth and health. Now, she is back, greedily revisiting every old place like a disabled person, eager to string up the broken pearls in memory again. However, the Japanese invaders have been ravaged for many years, Beiping is also dilapidated and old. Although the moat is still under the ancient city wall, and white pigeons are still passing by in the blue sky, my mother knows that the water of life will not flow backwards. Beiping ten years ago is the same as myself ten years ago. Gone forever." Soon, Liang Sicheng's family moved into No. 8 Xinlinyuan, the professor's dormitory of Tsinghua University. Liang Sicheng officially became the director of the Department of Construction (later changed to the Department of Civil Engineering) of Tsinghua University. According to the regulation that he cannot teach at Tsinghua at the same time, Lin is a specially invited staff rather than an official teacher of Tsinghua).Except for Wang Shixiang who transferred to the Palace Museum, Liu Zhiping, Mo Zongjiang, Luo Zhewen, and Liang Sicheng's former student Wu Liangyong and other members of the former China Construction Society all defected to teach under the Department of Architecture and Architecture at Tsinghua University, where Liang Si became the head. . ——A brand new pattern is formed in the water, trees and Tsinghua with fluttering catkins and rippling lotus. The China Construction Society has completed its historical mission and has become a precious specimen, embedded in a page of Chinese cultural history. In the same year, Liang Zaibing, who walked out of Lizhuang Xianqun Girls' Middle School wearing straw sandals, was lucky enough to be admitted to the Department of Western Language and Literature of Peking University. In March 1947, Fei Weimei wanted to return to China to take office. Before leaving China, she flew from Nanjing to Peiping to say goodbye to Lin Huiyin, Jin Yuelin and other friends. This was the last time they met. up.In the winter of the same year, tuberculosis bacteria invaded one of Lin Huiyin's kidneys and had to be surgically removed.Lin was admitted to the hospital with little hope, and left a suicide note-like letter to Fei Weimei, which contained "goodbye, dear Weimei!" and other sad words of farewell.Fortunately, the operation was unexpectedly successful, and Lin Huiyin broke free from the embrace of death again. But overall health deteriorated further, and the wound took months to barely heal. On December 13, 1948, the People's Liberation Army stationed in Tsinghua University, advancing to Beiping City. The sound of cannons rumbled throughout the suburbs of Pingping, and the smoke filled the air, and the ancient city of Beiping was in danger.Worried Liang Sicheng stood at the school gate and looked south every day, listening to the sound of gunfire in the distance. While circling back and forth, he said to himself: "It's over now, it's all over!" It means that all the buildings with cultural relic value in Beiping will be destroyed by artillery fire.Unexpectedly, soon, several representatives of the People's Liberation Army wearing big fur hats accompanied by Zhang Xiruo came to Liang's house, and asked Liang Sicheng and Lin Huiyin to mark the locations of ancient buildings and cultural relics that needed to be protected on the military map of Beiping, so that they could be protected during the attack. protected in the city.Although Liang Sicheng realized that he may have given Zhou Enlai a copy of the protection map for the bombing of Japanese local cultural relics for the Allied forces in Chongqing, he was still confronted with the fact that soldiers under the leadership of the CCP came to ask for advice. Deeply moved. ——It was with this ideal and little understanding of the Chinese Communist Party that Liang Sicheng and Lin Huiyin voluntarily stayed in Tsinghua University and opened a new page in their lives at a turning point in history. After the founding of the People's Republic of China, Lin Huiyin was not only responsible for the teaching work of Tsinghua University, but also served as a member of the Beijing Urban Planning Commission and the Construction Committee of the People's Heroes Monument. At the same time, he was elected as a representative of the first Beijing Municipal People's Congress and a representative of the National Cultural Congress.According to Lin Huiyin, from then on, she really devoted herself to the new political power and new social transformation and construction as Lin Huiyin herself, not as "Mrs. Liang".During this period, Lin Huiyin proudly participated in the design of the National Emblem of New China and the Monument to the People’s Heroes together with Liang Sicheng and other colleagues from Tsinghua University. It is said that when Chairman Mao Zedong announced at the Second Session of the First National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference that the national emblem design designed by Tsinghua University had been approved, Lin Huiyin who was sitting in the audience was so excited that she shed tears. In the autumn of 1954, Lin Huiyin's condition deteriorated rapidly and he completely lost the ability to work.At the end of the year, he was critically ill and was admitted to Beijing Tongren Hospital for emergency treatment. In January 1955, Liang Sicheng fell ill due to overwork and was admitted to Tongren Hospital for treatment in the ward next to Lin Huiyin, and became a patient with Lin Huiyin.Liang's condition improved slightly, so he went to visit and accompany his wife in her room every day, but at this time Lin Huiyin was too weak to speak, and finally refused to take medicine for treatment. On the night of March 31, 1955, when Lin Huiyin was dying, Liang Sicheng came to her bed from the ward next door. At this time, Lin Huiyin's face had no color.Seeing his wife struggling in pain, Liang Sicheng, who was anxious and unable to heal, burst into tears and muttered to himself: "Suffer, Hui, suffer, you really suffer!..." Late at night, Liang Sicheng returned to his bedroom. Ward rest. Not long after, Lin Huiyin told the nurse in a weak voice that she wanted to see Liang Sicheng for the last time and had something to say.The domineering nurse refused on the grounds that "it's late at night, so I'll talk about it tomorrow".But Lin Huiyin had no strength to wait until dawn, and his last wish was not realized, which became a lifelong regret. At 6:20 in the morning on April 1, Lin Huiyin swallowed his last breath and passed away at the age of 51.At the last moment of her life, what did she want to say to her husband Liang Sicheng? With Lin Huiyin's death, this question has become an unsolved mystery. Lin Huiyin was buried in the Babaoshan Revolutionary Martyrs Cemetery after her death. The People’s Heroes Monument Construction Committee decided to transfer the white marble engraving of a wreath and streamers designed by Lin Huiyin herself as her tombstone. Tomb".In accordance with the promise of "the deceased will design the tomb for each other" previously agreed by Liang and Lin, Liang Sicheng personally designed the tomb for his wife—a beautiful poet and architect with her dreams and beliefs. At the condolence ceremony, many relatives, old friends, friends and students sent wreaths and elegiac couplets. The most eye-catching one was the elegiac couplet jointly written by Lin Huiyin's close friends Jin Yuelin and Deng Yizhe: "A poetic Qianxun Waterfall, April Day in the eternal world." Lin Huiyin, who is full of poetry, drifts away with the wind in April, which is full of spring, and her beautiful heart and ingenious talents follow the soaring waterfall to the earth and the world. The immortal masterpieces she left behind for Chinese literature and architectural historiography will forever be a model of an era for future generations. Lin Huiyin experienced nine years of homelessness during the Anti-Japanese War, the country's hatred for his family, and the suffering of poverty and illness. This bruised human elf disappeared into the western sky like a faint rainbow. The famous poet He Sanpo said: "The creator endowed Lin Huiyin with amazing beauty, so there is no need to give her peerless talent; and if she is given peerless talent, there is no need to give her brilliant and beautiful beauty. Since both have both, they must be The hand of a false God tried to kill him." My God?Fate?Or destiny! The avenue is invisible, but the great sound has no sound. The death of Lin Huiyin may be due to the special love and patronage of the benevolent old man God for this angel who descended to the world, so as to prevent his pure and sincere body and mind from being insulted and ravaged. If she survived again, she would not only be insulted by smashing a tombstone (Note: Lin's tombstone was smashed by Tsinghua Red Guards during the "Cultural Revolution"), she might end up being thrown into the ashes.Lin Huiyin's early death was the caress of God and the great luck among her misfortunes. As for his family and friends who are still struggling in the storms of the world until they suffer misfortune, God and her in the kingdom of heaven cannot take care of them.
