The above test is an extremely important part of the mate selection process.A woman takes this test to see which men will allow her to produce reproductively competitive offspring.But when, as in Scene 28, this mate-selection quiz is associated with rough sex, the quiz itself becomes a dangerous business.In any case, the two girls in this scene are unharmed, and they each make significant judgments about their partners.Judging from the subsequent behavior of the two girls, one boy passed the mate selection test and the other boy was eliminated.因此，择偶测验究竟是什么呢？还有，对人类或动物的粗暴性戏的功能来说，这种测验能提供我们什么启示呢？ 在回答上面的问题之前，我们必须先弄清楚，进行上述择偶测验时男女两性的利害不同处。有关粗暴性戏的许多重要因素，我们还会在本书的其他部分提到，不过我们在下面即将进行的说明里，这些因素也会显得非常有决定性，因为我们在这里的说明，主要是针对一对男女的第一次性交。 当一对男女建立起一种长期关系之后，他们在性交中付出的代价和获得的利益就会逐渐趋于相同，但即使如此，性交的功能对他们来说可能仍然是不同的。然而，光就第一次性交来看，双方的情况则是完全不同。这时就算不考虑感染疾病的可能——因为双方都得担这个风险——男女双方所要付出的代价和能够获得的利益也都完全不同。特别是男女第一次性交也极可能是他们最后一次性交的时候，情况更是如此。男性也和其他雄性动物一样，他从这种仅此一次的“一次情”式性交中得到的利益，要比他付出的代价更多。 姑且不论社会可能给予男性的压力，让我们先从繁衍成果的观点来看，男性能和长期伴侣以外的女性生出子女，同时，他也不需要为此付出太多代价。在男性射精之后，只要他愿意，他就能避免和那名女性或她生下的子女再做任何更进一步的接触。即使他让对方生下了子女，即使将来对方向他要求援助，男性没有必要为了“一次情”式的性交而卷入为了摆脱对方而引发的纠纷。正因为这样，男性为了避免各种可能性出现，他会宁愿付出较小的代价，以换取制造子女的机会。要是男性新认识了一名女性，但他却没抓住机会在她体内射精，这名男性可能永远都不会再有第二次机会。在这种情形下，不管那名女性下个孩子的父亲是谁，但反正绝对不会是这名男性。男性如果能够充分利用“一次情”式的性交机会，那么他在这方面的能力将对他的繁衍成果产生极大的影响。 女性的情况则和男性大不相同。对女性来说，怀孕是一件大事。因为除了几个月的妊娠期之外，女性可能还必须为了子女贡献出数年的时间。让她怀孕的男性可能将她弃置不顾。甚至，还有另一种可能：女性找到理想男性之前就先怀孕了，但随后却发现使她受孕的男性基因并不理想，这时她就会养育出竞争力较弱的子女。上述两种负面的可能性都表示，轻率的“一次情”会严重损害女性的繁衍成果。对女性来说，“一次情”的时机和对象要比次数更重要。而对女性来说，最重要的，还是谨慎和选择。 当然，女性不一定永远都那么小心谨慎。在大部分情况下，她不会放弃自己的选择机会，但有时却会忽略小心谨慎。例如某个男性的精子是她特别渴望得到的，而她又正好有机会和这名男性进行“一次情”的时候。通常，这时女性早已观察过这名男性，而且也已经从基因的观点认定他适合做她下个孩子的父亲。我们在这本书里介绍过几位女性都曾有过类似的行为表现。大部分这些场景里列举的类似行为，都和女性的外遇有关。对拥有长期伴侣的女性来说，只要她的外遇不被发现，“一次情”并不会让她付出太多代价。长期的伴侣关系反而可以作为女性的立足点，她能以这种关系为基础，和自己选中的男性进行“一次情”式的性交，但却不必冒太大的风险。无论如何，没有长期伴侣的女性是无法享有这种自由的。 女性由于受到上述压力，所以她们也和所有的雌性鸟类或雌性哺乳类动物一样，天生就具备了谨慎特性与选择能力。如果女性过去好几代的祖先都不曾有过“一次情”，那么她们的繁衍成果显然比不上那些曾经有过“一次情”的女性。所有活在现代的女性都不会是那些粗鲁轻率的女子的后代，她们一定是更小心谨慎的祖先生下的子孙。相对地，男性对“一次情”式的性交则天生就显得性急又想法单纯。如果男性过去好几代的祖先都不够性急，又没有说服力，他们的繁衍成果一定比不上那些性急且具备说服力的男性。所有生活在现代的男性都不会是那些自得自满、自以为是的男子的后代，他们一定是更迫切性急的祖先生下的子孙。综上所述，男女两性为“一次情”性交付出的代价，以及从中获得的利益实在是差异太大。这种差异同时也表示，只要男女两性碰到任何稍微和“性”扯上一点关系的状况，两性之间就会出现利害冲突。 男性只有完全征服他想要的女性时才能满足他的性急，而且，这名女性必须表现出“只想立刻和他性交”，而非“以后再和他或其他男人性交”。只有在这种情况下，男性才会感到满足。这时为了完全征服女性，他惟一能选择的手段就是尝试强行在她体内射精。从第一印象来看，场景28里的两个男孩似乎也是采取了这种手段。可是就像我们在前面说过的，实际情况却不是那么简单。男性企图强行射精时，如果女性坚决抵抗，男性则会固执到底，这种常见的现象也可能变成双方都承认的求爱与前戏的步骤。而这种现象却会使实际情况变得更为复杂。同样的，攻击性行为或某种程度的肉体伤害也可能变成求爱与前戏的一部分。现在，再让我们回头来看女性为了择偶尔设定的测验方式，相信大家现在都对粗暴性戏的功能有所了解了吧。 粗暴性戏这个题目还牵涉到感情的部分。事实上，因为牵涉到感情的部分太多了，可能我们最好暂且不提人类，先从动物的求爱过程来说明会比较好。举例来说，例如在观察狗儿求偶的时候，我们经常看到笨拙的公狗，不管它被母狗拒绝多少次，它仍然固执地想要接近母狗。再拿家猫来说，我们观察到母猫会伸出爪子去抓它未来的对象，或甚至对它吐口水。而在观察水貂的时候，我们还发现，雄貂企图制服雌貂的猛烈抵抗，雄貂的爪子甚至会把雌貂抓得流血。在对上述动物行为进行观察时，我们无法不为那些雌性动物感到难过。在最好的状况下，它们只是被雄性骚扰，但在情况比较糟糕的时候，雌性动物会因为雄性不允许它们拒绝性交而遭到肉体上的伤害。然而，即使母狗母猫坚持抵抗，最后它们仍然会和那个既顽强又有攻击性的求爱者进行交尾。而对雌水貂来说，要是不曾遭受过雄貂的肉体伤害，它们甚至不会排卵。雌貂的身体要一直等到适合的雄貂在它体内射精之后，才会产生卵子。对所有上述这些动物来说，雌性的坚决抵抗其实正是在试探雄性能力的一项测验。而粗暴性戏对人类来说，则具备了相同的意义。 平均来看，能在肉体上征服女性的抗拒并在她体内射精的男性，才能比那些无法做到这些的男性留下更多子孙。而女性的子孙如能拥有这种能力，才能使她的繁衍成绩获得成就。因此，女性在她的择偶条件当中，可以再加上一项：征服女性在肉体上的抗拒。不过问题是，她们要如何探测男性的这种能力呢？ 一开始，女性只须观察自己的对象和其他男性竞争的情形。就像场景28里的男孩，他们花了很多时间彼此追逐、打斗、表现体力、掩饰弱点。但到了最后阶段，女性惟一能够提出的测验，就是试探对方能否说服并征服自己的抗拒。而在进行这项测验的时候，女性首先必须表现言语的抗拒，接下来才是肉体的抗拒。女性抗拒得越强烈，表现得越逼真，测验的效果也越理想。 当然，这是一种很危险的游戏。如果女性抗拒得不够，测验就会失去意义。反之，如果抗拒得过为激烈，则她可能就不只是受一点皮肉之伤了，男性也可能会失手对她造成真正的伤害。不过事实上，家猫、水貂、甚至人类在求爱过程中进行的粗暴性戏，却很少造成真正的严重伤害，由此可知，这是一种根据自然淘汰的准确性所形成的性行为特征。即使像水貂那样，雄貂给予雌貂的肉体伤害能够刺激雌貂排卵，但这种刺激的程度虽然强得足以测试雄貂能否征服雌貂的抵抗，可是却不至于强到使雌貂造成长期的肉体损伤。 对人类这种会建立长期伴侣关系的动物来说，粗暴性戏在男女求爱阶段的初期是非常重要的。女性一旦测试过男性征服自己的能力之后，她就不需要再经常进行这种测验。不过，即使在他们建立起长期关系之后，女性若能经常重新评估配偶的能力，对她本身却是有好处的。例如我们前面说过各种探测男性的健康与性交能力的测验，就是重估配偶能力的方式。 当然，粗暴性戏这种行为也和人类其他性行为特征一样，各人各样，因人而异。对某些人来说，粗暴性戏在他的伴侣关系中只占了很小的部分，而且并不常见。但对某些人来说，当他们要接纳对方成为适合的伴侣时，粗暴性戏对他们来说却是不可或缺的条件，这时就算是将性戏的程度提升到性虐待的地步，他们也在所不惜。这个场景里的那对黑发男女，显然就有这种倾向。他们那天下午进行的第一次性交不仅粗暴，充满痛楚，而且对女孩来说，是个屈辱的经验。但黑发女孩却通过这样的测验认定男孩才是跟她旗鼓相当的对手。在后来的几年里，他们的性生活仍然按照类似的脉络进行。即使在男孩变成女孩的长期伴侣之后，她仍然经常在例行性交中测试他征服自己的能力。 看了我们的说明之后，对这个场景里的两个女孩那天下午在河边所做的决定，以及数星期之后所做的决定，相信大家都能够了解其中的原因了吧。男孩强迫黑发女孩和他性交，结果他通过了女孩的测验。黑发女孩其实和其他许多女孩一样，早已被那个男孩所吸引，她的身体察觉出男孩的特征，并认定他能成为她的优良伴侣候选人，因为他也能让她生下具备繁衍能力的子孙。这里所指的特征包括：体力、性交能力，以及其他跟她的特征相合的部分。 而相对的，在同一天下午，另一个男孩却在他的女友眼中失尽了面子。部分原因是他和黑发男孩被放在一起比较，这让他感到很痛苦。而主要原因还是他完全不合女友的择偶标准。这个男孩想要通过女友的测验，他可能采取两种对策，不过他却没能善用这两种对策。造成男孩双重失策的主要原因是缺乏经验。首先，如果他拥有更丰富的经验，他可能会选择暂时抑制自己的冲动，而从结果来看，这样他反而可能获得长期的利益。然而，就算男孩选择了强迫手段，如果他在性交方面更有经验，他还是可能和女孩建立长期的伴侣关系，同时也可能在未来赢得更多射精的机会。
