Chapter 9 Chapter Eight Immediate Enlightenment and Its Obstacles

Mystery of Wisdom 奥修 16574Words 2018-03-20
Bombay, India, 1 March 1973 first question: You said that either a person sees the world, or a person sees Brahman, and it is impossible to gradually perceive Brahman, but in experience, we feel that when we become more and more peaceful, we feel more and more divine. The sense of being will gradually become clearer and clearer, and if real experience is never gradual but immediate, then what is this gradual growth and clarity? This is a very old question: "Is enlightenment immediate or gradual?" There are many things to understand, there is a tradition that enlightenment is gradual, everything can be divided into many levels, everything can Divided into steps, like anything else, knowledge can be divided, you can become wiser and wiser, you can become more enlightened, this is widely accepted because the human mind cannot conceive Anything immediate, the mind wants to divide, to analyze, the mind is a divider, the hierarchy can be understood by the mind, but the immediate is not psychological, it is beyond the mind.

If I tell you that you are ignorant and you gradually become wiser, that is understandable, you can understand it, if I tell you, "No, there is no progressive growth, you are either ignorant or enlightened, that leap It is immediate." Then the question of "how to become enlightened" arises, if it is not gradual then there cannot be progress, if there are no levels of growth then you cannot progress, you cannot progress.Where to start? In a burst, the beginning and the end are together, there is no gap between the beginning and the end, so where to start? That beginning is the end.

It becomes a riddle for the mind, a koan, but instant enlightenment seems impossible, not that it is impossible, but the mind cannot imagine it.Remember, how can the mind imagine enlightenment? It can't do it. The statement that "the explosion within is gradual growth" is widely accepted, and even many enlightened people concede to your minds, saying, "Yes, there is gradual growth." There is not gradual growth, it is they Saying it by accepting your attitude and the way you perceive, they have a deep compassion for you, they know that if you start thinking that it is incremental, that the beginning is good, but there will be no incremental growth, however, If you start, if you keep seeking, one day the immediate thing will happen to you.But if it is said that enlightenment can only be immediate and not gradual growth, then you will not even start and it will never happen, there are many enlightened people who say enlightenment is gradual, they just want to To help you, to convince you to start.

Something is possible through gradual processes, but enlightenment cannot be, enlightenment cannot be, something else is possible, but those other things can become helpful, for example, if you want Make water evaporate, then you heat it and it evaporates, at a certain point, at a hundred degrees, evaporation will happen -- instantly! There is no gradual growth between water and steam, you cannot divide, you cannot say that this water is some steam and some water, or it is water, or it is steam, and suddenly the water jumps into state of vapor. It's a leap, not a gradual growth, but by heating you gradually give heat to the water, you help it get to a hundred degrees, to the boiling point, it's a natural growth, until the boiling point, the water will be It gets hotter and grows, then evaporation happens instantly.

So there are many masters, who are very intelligent and compassionate, and they use the language of the human mind, which can be understood, and they tell you, "Yes, there is gradual growth." This statement gives you courage, gives you confidence , gives you hope, and gives you the possibility that it can happen. You cannot reach it in an immediate burst, but gradually, step by step, with your limitations, with your frailties, you can also grow to reach it, it may take many lifetimes, but there is still hope, You will become hot with all your efforts. The second thing to remember: even hot water is still water, so even if your mind becomes clearer, your perception becomes purer, you become more moral, more centered, you are still a human being, and Not a buddha, you are still unenlightened, you become more peaceful, more serene, more composed, you feel a deep bliss, but you are still a human being, and your feeling is actually negative, not positive.

You feel calm because you are less tense, and you feel joy because you are less attached to your pain. You don't create pain, you feel calm, not that you have achieved that "oneness", just that now you are less divided.Remember: your growth is negative. You are just hot water, any moment you can reach boiling point, when it happens, you will not feel calm, you will not even feel bliss, you will not feel serenity, because these attributes are at their "opposite extremes" is relative. When you are tense you can feel peace, when you feel noise you can feel peace, when you are split, fragmented, you can feel oneness, when you are suffering, in In the midst of extreme pain, you can feel joy.

That's why Buddha is silent, because words cannot express what is beyond polarity, he cannot say, "Now I am full of joy." Because even this feeling of "Now I am full of joy" has to have pain as a background. possible. You can feel health only when there is a background of sickness and disease, and you can feel life only when there is a background of death.Buddha cannot say, "Now I am immortal." Because death has completely disappeared. Therefore, immortality cannot be felt. How can you feel joy if pain is completely gone? How can you feel peace if the noise and pain are totally absent? They cannot be felt without the opposite extreme; how can you feel light if darkness disappears completely, that is impossible.

Buddha cannot say, "I have become light!" He cannot say, "Now I am full of light." If he said that, we will say, he has not become Buddha, he cannot say such a thing .If you want to feel light, darkness must exist; if you want to feel immortality, death must exist; you cannot avoid the opposite. This is a basic need for any experience to exist. So, what was Buddha's experience?Whatever we know is not that, it is neither negative nor positive; neither this nor that; whatever can be expressed is not that. That's why Lao Tzu insists so much that truth is unspeakable, the moment you say it, you have falsified it, it is no longer true.Truth cannot be spoken because it cannot be divided into opposite poles. Language has meaning only when opposite poles are possible, otherwise language becomes meaningless. If there is no opposite, language loses meaning. .

So there is a tradition that says enlightenment is gradual, but that tradition is not the real truth, it is a half-truth, which is spoken to sympathize with the human mind.Enlightenment is immediate, it cannot come any other way, it is a leap!It is not continuous with your past!Try to understand: if something is gradual, the past remains in it; if something is gradual, then there is a continuum without gaps; if going from ignorance to knowledge is a gradual growth , well, ignorance cannot disappear completely, it will remain, it will continue, because there is no discontinuity, no gap, so that ignorance may become more refined, that ignorance may become more knowledgeable, that ignorance It may look smart, but it still exists, then it will be more refined, of course, the more refined it is, the more dangerous it is, when it is more knowledgeable, it is more cunning, more capable of deceiving self-realization and ignorance is completely separate, is totally discontinuous, is a leap in which the past dissolves completely, the old has gone, it has ceased to exist, and the new has not yet appeared, the new that was not there before .

The Buddha is said to have said, "I am no longer what I was after. I am what I am that never existed before." This statement sounds absurd and illogical, but it is, and it is. !Buddha said, "I am not the one who was seeking before, I am not the one who is seeking enlightenment, I am not the one who is ignorant, the old one is completely dead, I am new, I never existed in that There is a gap in the old man, the old dies and the new is born." It is difficult for the mind to conceive this. How can you conceive it?How can you conceive a gap?Something must go on, how is it possible to say that something disappears completely and something new appears?Twenty years ago this was absurd to the logical mind, it was absurd to the scientific mind, but now, to science, it is no longer absurd, and now they say that in the depths of the atom electrons appear and disappear, they jump, the electron jumps from one point to another, and in between, it doesn't exist, it appears at point A, disappears and reappears at point B, at In that gap, it is not there, it is not there, it becomes totally non-existent.

If so, it means that non-existence is also a kind of existence, which is difficult to conceive, but it is so: non-existence is also a kind of existence, as if something changes from visible to invisible, from form to formlessness . When Gautama Siddhartha—the one who disappeared and became Buddha—was pursuing, he was a visible form; when enlightenment happened, that form completely dissolved and became invisible, and at a certain moment A void, in that void there is no one, and out of that void a new form arises, and this new form is the Buddha.Because the body continues in the same way, we think there is a continuum, but the inner real being has completely changed; because the body continues in the same way, we say "Gautama Buddha" - the Siddhartha"—now has become "Enlightened Gotama", he has become a Buddha, and the Buddha himself said: "I am not the one who was pursuing before, I am a completely different person." The mind is very It is difficult to conceive this. There are many things which are difficult for the mind, but they cannot be rejected just because they are difficult for the mind. The mind has to give in to the impossible which it cannot understand.Sex cannot give way to mind, mind has to give way to sex. This is one of the most fundamental truths inherent: Enlightenment is a discontinuous phenomenon. The old just disappears and the new is born. There is another tradition, a later tradition, and in that tradition, they have always insisted that enlightenment is immediate -- not gradual, but the people who belong to that tradition are very few, they cling to the truth, but their number must be very Less, because if enlightenment is immediate, then you cannot generate many followers, you cannot understand it, how to follow it?It's shocking to the fabric of logic, and it seems absurd, impossible, but remember one thing: whether of matter or of the mind, you're going to have to meet a lot of superficial minds. unimaginable things, and then you go into deeper realms. Tertullian - one of the greatest Christian mystics - once said, "I believe in God because God is the greatest absurdity; I believe in God because the mind cannot believe in God." Believe in God Impossible: no proof, no argument, no logic can help us believe in God, everything is against it, against its existence, but Tertullian says: "That's why I believe, because only by By trying to believe a nonsense, I was able to get that out of my head." This is beautiful, if you want to get out of your mind, you will need something that your mind cannot conceive. If your mind can imagine it, it absorbs it into its own system, then you cannot go beyond your mind, so every religion sticks to a certain point of absurdity, there is no religion without some kind of absurdity It can exist, and the existence of absurdity is only a basis in religion. You can either turn back from the absurdity and say, "I can't believe it, so I'm going to go away." Then you remain yourself, or you can jump: you turn away from your mind.Enlightenment cannot happen unless your mind is killed. Your mind is the problem, your logic is the problem, your arguments are the problem, they exist on the surface, they look real, but they are deceiving, they are not real, for example, look at the mind How the structure works, the mind divides everything into two parts, but in fact things are indivisible, existence is indivisible, you cannot divide it, yet the mind keeps dividing it, it says 'this' is life,' The "is death, but what is the real truth? The real truth is that both are the same.In this very moment you are both alive and dead, you are living and dying, you are both life and death. The mind divides, it says, "this" is death, "that" is life, it not only divides, it says that the two are opposites, the enemy, and it says that death tries to destroy life, "death tries To destroy life" seems all right, but if you go deeper, deeper than the mind, then death is not trying to destroy life! You cannot exist without death. Death helps you to exist. It helps you to exist every moment. If for a single moment death stops working, you will die. Every moment death discards many parts of you that have become useless. There are many cells that die, they are removed by death, and when they are removed, new ones are born. You are growing: something is always dying and something is always living, every moment there is life and death, both are working.Linguistically, I have to call both of them "two", but they are not "two"!They are two sides of a phenomenon. Birth and death are one. "Birth and death" is a process, but the mind can divide. The division seems to be no problem for us, but the division is false. You say this is light and that is darkness, you divide, but where does the darkness begin and where does the light end?Can you divide them? You cannot divide them, in fact, black and white are two ends of a long gray, and that gray is life.Black appears at one end and white at the other, but the real being is gray, and in that gray itself contains both. The mind divides so that after division everything looks well-defined.Life is very chaotic, that's why life is a mystery, that's why the mind cannot understand life.It helps to create clear-cut ideas that you can think about easily and conveniently, but then you miss the reality of life. Life is a mystery and the mind unravels the mystery of everything. , then what you get are some dead pieces, not the whole. With the mind you will not be able to conceive how enlightenment is immediate, it will not be able to conceive how you will disappear, or how something new will appear there that you never knew before, don't try to come through the mind Know, but practice something that keeps you hot, try to get some fire that keeps you hot, and then, suddenly, one day, you'll know that old Gone, the water is no more, it is a new phenomenon, you have evaporated, everything has changed completely. Water always flows downwards, however after evaporation, that new phenomenon is upwards, the whole law is changed, Newton's law of gravity says that the earth attracts everything downwards, but the law of gravity is just a law , there is another law, which you may not have heard, because science has not yet discovered it, but yoga and tantra have known it for many centuries, they call it "lifting", gravity is Pull down, and "lift up" means pull up. The story of how gravity was discovered is well known, Newton sat under an apple tree and an apple fell, and because of this, he began to think that something was pulling the apple down, and Tantra And yoga is asking: "How did the apple grow upwards in the first place? How did it grow upwards?" This must first be explained: How did the apple reach that upward position? How do trees grow upwards? The apple was not there, it was hidden in the seed, and then it went through the whole journey to reach the upper position, only then it was able to fall, so gravity is the second law, "lift up" It's the first law, there's something pulling the apple up, what's that? In everyday life, we easily know about gravity because we are all pulled down.Water flows downwards, it is governed by the law of gravity, when it evaporates, suddenly that law evaporates, so it is governed by the "law of ascension" Dominated, it goes up. Ignorance is governed by the law of gravity, you always go down, no matter what you do, you have to go down, in every way, you have to go down, and struggle alone is not going to be much Helps, unless you get into a different law - the law of "lifting up".That's what samadhi is, it's the door of "lifting up," and once you evaporate, once you're no longer water, everything changes. It doesn't mean that you can control it, and you don't need to control it at all. In this way, you won't go down. Just as it was impossible to go up before, it is impossible to go down now. It's not that Buddha is going to be non-violent, he can't be non-violent, it's not that he's trying to be loving, he can't be non-violent, he has to be loving, that's not a choice, it's not an effort , not any artificially cultivated virtue, that's just saying now it's a law: he ascends.Hate is governed by the law of gravity, love is governed by the law of "lifting up". This immediate transformation does not mean that you do nothing and just wait for the immediate transformation, if that is the case it will never come and that is the difficulty. When I say, or someone else says: Enlightenment is immediate, we think that if it is immediate then there is nothing to do.We just have to wait, and when it happens, it happens, so what can a person do?If it's gradual, then you can do some work. But I will tell you, it is not gradual, and you can do some things, you have to do some things, but those things will not lead you to enlightenment, those things will lead you to near the phenomenon of enlightenment, those things It will open you to the phenomenon of enlightenment so that it can happen, so enlightenment cannot be a result of your effort, it is not a result of your effort.Through hard work, you can only become a chance to reach the higher "ascending" law, through hard work, you will be open to enlightenment, but it does not mean that through hard work, you will become enlightened. You become open, you become non-resistive, you become cooperative and the higher law operates, and once you become cooperative and non-resisting, the higher law operates.Your effort will make you back down, your effort will make you more receptive. It's like: you're sitting in your room with the door closed, the sun is outside, and you're in the dark, and you can't do anything to bring the sunlight in, but as soon as you open the door, the sunlight can enter your room. You cannot bring the sunlight in, but you can keep it out, and if you open the door, the sunlight can enter your room. You cannot bring the sunlight in, but you can keep it out. If you open the door, the sunlight will come in, the light waves will come in, the light will enter the room. It's not that you really bring the sunlight in, you just remove the block and the light comes in by itself.Know it deeply: you cannot do anything to achieve enlightenment, but you are doing many things to prevent it, so that it cannot reach you.You create a lot of obstacles. So you can only do something negatively, you can throw away the barriers, you can open the door, and when the door opens, the light comes in, and the light will touch you and change you. All effort in this sense is destroying obstacles, not attaining enlightenment. All effort is negative, it is like medicine.Medicine cannot give you health, it can only destroy your disease. Once the disease is not there, health occurs and you are open to health. If disease is there, health cannot happen. That's why neither eastern nor western medicine has been able to define what health is, they can define every disease very clearly, they know thousands of diseases, and those diseases are all defined, but they cannot To define what health is, the most they can say is: When there is no disease, you are healthy. But what is health?Health is something beyond the mind, something that exists: you can have it, you can feel it, but you cannot define it. You already know health, can you define it?What is it?When you try to define it, you will have to refer to disease, you will have to say something about disease, you will have to say, "The absence of disease is health." This is absurd, you need to define health in terms of disease ?Disease has its definite nature, health has its own definite nature, but health is not so definite because it is infinite. You can feel it, you know health is there when it is there, but what is it?Disease can be cured and destroyed. When the barrier is broken, the light comes in, and the phenomenon of enlightenment is similar, it is spiritual health, the mind is a spiritual disease and meditation is nothing but medicine. Buddha is said to have said, "I am a medicine giver, a doctor, I am not a teacher, I am not here to give you dogma, I know a certain medicine that will cure your diseases. Don't ask about health, Take the medicine, destroy the disease, and you will know what health is, don't ask about health." Buddha said: "I am not a metaphysician, I am not a philosopher, I am about what is God, what is the soul, alone What is, what is Liberation, what is Nirvana, no interest, I am not interested at all! I am only interested in what the disease is and how it can be cured, I am a medicine giver." His approach is completely scientific , he made a diagnosis of human dilemmas and diseases, and his approach was absolutely correct. Destroy the barrier, what is the barrier?Thought is the basic obstacle. When you think, a barrier of thought is created, a wall of thought is created between you and what is, and thought is denser than any wall of stone, thought has many layers, and you cannot See through them and see what is real, you keep thinking what is real, you keep imagining what is real, and what is real is waiting for you here and now, if you give it the chance , it happens to you, you go on thinking about what is real, but if you don't know, how can you think? You cannot think about what you do not know, you can only think about what you already know, thinking is repetitive, overlapping, it never reaches anything new and unknown, through thinking you never touch The unknown, you can only touch the known, and that is meaningless because you already know it.You can go on feeling it over and over again, you may still enjoy the feeling, but nothing new will come out of it. Stop thinking, dissolve thinking, then the barrier is broken, then your door is opened, and the light can come in, and once the light comes in, you know that the old is no more, so you Just know that you are that totally new, it was never there, you never knew it, but maybe you could even say it's the "oldest" because it's always been there, you just didn't know it. You can use two expressions, they mean the same thing, you can call it "the oldest", which is the Brahman that has always been; you can say that you have been missing it, or, you can say it is What's new, it's only happening now, it never existed before, and that's right, because it's new to you, and if you want to talk about truth, you're going to have to use paradoxical expressions. The Upanishad says, "This is the new and the old; this is the oldest and the latest; this is both the far and the near." But then language becomes Paradoxical, contradictory. You ask me, "If real experience is never gradual but immediate, then what is this gradual growth and clarity?" This clarity is of the mind, this clarity is of the reduction of disease, this clarity is of obstacle If one obstacle falls, your burden becomes lighter, and your eyes are less clouded, and if another obstacle falls, your burden becomes lighter again, and your eyes become clearer again. , but this clarity does not belong to enlightenment, this clarity is only the reduction of disease, not health. When all the obstacles disappear and your mind disappears with those obstacles, then you cannot say, "Now my mind is clear." Because it is no longer there, you can only say, "Now there is no mind." When there is no mind, then that clarity belongs to enlightenment, then that clarity belongs to enlightenment! That is absolutely different, another dimension opens up, but you have to experience clarity of mind, always remember that no matter how clear your mind becomes, it is still a blockage, no matter how transparent your mind becomes, Even if it becomes a clear glass and you can see the other side, it's still a barrier and you're going to have to break it completely. So sometimes when a person is meditating, he will become more and more clear, his sanity will become clearer and quieter, and tranquility will be felt, then one will be attached to meditation, thinking that everything is being It is achieved, the great masters have been emphasizing that one day you will have to drop even your meditation. I am going to tell you a story, a Zen story, Bokuju was meditating, meditating very deeply, meditating with his whole heart, his master would come every day and he would just go back every day with a smile , Bukeyou felt disturbed, the master didn’t say anything, he just came, looked at him, smiled and went back, but Bukeyou felt very good in meditation, his meditation was deepening every day , he needed someone to compliment him, and he waited for the Master to pat him on the shoulder and say, "Okay, Bukeyu, you've done a good job." But the Master just laughed, and that laughter sounded like an insult, It was as if Bukyo was not improving, but in fact he was improving, and when he improved more, the laughter became more and more insulting, so that it was no longer possible to bear it. One day the Master came, and Bu Keyou felt completely peaceful, the only tranquility his mind could have. There was no noise, no thought at all, his mind was completely transparent, and he could not feel any obstacles. He was full of subtle, deep emotions. Happiness, bliss overflowing, even in ecstasy, so he thought, "Now my master will not laugh, now the moment has come and he will tell me: Bukhyu, you have become enlightened. " That day the Master came and took a brick in his hand, and he started rubbing that brick towards the rock that Booker was sitting on, and he was very peaceful, but the rubbing of the brick and the stone made noise, and he became disturbed, and finally he Couldn't stand it, so he opened his eyes and asked the master, "What are you doing?" The master replied, "I'm trying to turn this brick into a mirror. A mirror." Bukeyou said: "You are too stupid to do this, how can this brick become a mirror, no matter how hard you grind it, it will not become a mirror." The master smiled and said, "Then what are you doing? This mind can never become enlightened, and you are still grinding it. You are polishing it, and you feel good. When I laugh at you, you feel hurt." Excuse me." Suddenly, when the master threw away that brick, Bukhyu became aware, when the master threw away that brick, he suddenly felt that the master was right, and his mind was broken. From that day on, There is no mind, no meditation, he becomes enlightened. The master told him: "Now you can go anywhere and teach them, first teach them meditation, then teach them non-meditation, first teach them how to clear the mind, because only a very clear mind can understand: even This very clear mind is also an obstacle; only a very deep meditative mind can understand: even meditation has to be dropped." Now you cannot understand.Krishnamurti keeps saying that there is no need for any meditation, and he is right, but he is telling the wrong person that he is right, that there is no need for any meditation, but he is wrong because he is not thinking about the obedient person. Those who cannot even understand what meditation is, how can they understand that there is no need for any meditation? It will be bad for them because they will cling to that concept and they will feel that concept is so good that they don't need any meditation and they will feel, "We are already enlightened." Listening to Krishnamurti, There are many people who will feel that there is no need to meditate, and they will think that those who meditate are stupid. They could have wasted their entire lives on this notion, and it's true. The point will come where meditation has to be dropped, the point will come when meditation becomes an obstacle, but you have to wait for that point to come, you cannot drop something that you don't have.Krishnamurti says, "No need to meditate, don't meditate." But you have never meditated, how can you say, "Don't meditate"? A rich man can throw away his wealth, but a poor man cannot, because to throw away you first need something to throw away.If you meditate, one day you will be able to renounce it, and that is the last renunciation, the greatest.Wealth can be dropped, that is easy; the family can be dropped, that is not difficult; the whole world can be dropped, because everything is external, external, external. The last thing is meditation, it is the innermost wealth, when you drop it, you drop yourself, then there is no self, not even a "meditation self", no great meditator exists, even if that The image is also broken, then you go into nothingness, only in this nothingness can there be discontinuity! The old has disappeared and the new has happened. Through meditation you have become available. Anything that is felt through meditation, don't think that is enlightenment, these are just glimpses of disease reduction, disease disappearing, you feel good, disease is reduced, so you feel healthier, real health has not come yet, But you're healthier than you were, and being healthier is good. second question: You say that life exists in opposite poles, like love and hate; attraction and repulsion; virtue and vice, etc., but what happens to these opposite poles when one enters into that witnessing consciousness? Don't ask, wait for that to happen, wait for that to happen. You can ask and some kind of answer can be given to you, but that answer cannot become a real answer for you.Never jump ahead, don't ask what happens when a person dies? I'm going to tell you a story.
