Chapter 6 fifth lecture

How to practice Buddhism 南怀瑾 8954Words 2018-03-20
content summary. Allegory of Fahua and Zhuangzi. Five thousand monks left the table. Segmentation and variable life and death. Eighty-four thousand kalpas at the flick of a finger. Preface——Oriental Xianrui. Metaphor - the fire house and three cars. Xinjie products. Medicinal herbs. Huacheng Yupin. I was in retreat, and a friend wrote me a letter, and I responded with two poems by Wang Yangming: It is said that the new residence is only separated by the shoulder of the mountain, and it is worth returning at dawn and dusk. Zhigong has long since broken up the barriers, what's the matter? The deep village is still closed.

Take the opportunity to find the flat boat involved in Wanshan and return it to the door. Don't take a physical illness as a mental illness, but it has nothing to do with it. "Don't take physical illness as mental illness, but it has nothing to do with it." These two sentences are very good. Could it be that you declined and didn't want to see me, there is such a sense of responsibility in it. In this class, we focus on how to practice and realize the Buddhadharma. It is not about Buddhism, nor is it about ordinary Buddhism. Our outline has been put forward, that is - view, practice, and action, the trinity.

We can use these three outlines to read all Buddhist scriptures. If the kung fu is not on the road, it means that the view is wrong; In other words, why is the view not available? It is because the cultivation has not been achieved, and the fulfillment of the vows has not been fulfilled. Why didn't the wish come? The merits and virtues are not perfect?Because there are problems with views and proofs.Trinity, indivisible. In the future, we will spend a little time correcting the posture of sitting cross-legged.Just now I saw a few people sitting there, their postures were all wrong, their external postures were not right, not to mention their internal ones.

Fahua and Shurangama are the two classics of Zen Buddhism, but our lecture today is not limited to Zen Buddhism, and there is no need to follow the line of Zen Buddhism. When we learn Buddhism, we should choose the path that is beneficial to our practice, regardless of whether he is Zen or not, don’t have sectarian views, don’t think that Zen is supreme, and don’t think that any sect is supreme. The so-called differences in sects are differences in methods, and they are basically the same. Like Zhuangzi, the Lotus Sutra tells stories. Now people think that Zhuangzi only talks about boundless words, which are fantasies, which is wrong. The so-called apartment means to entrust, and those who have sustenance are equivalent to beating a girl and scolding a lady. They have a target, not nonsense.Over the past century or so, many of the Western children's stories and novels translated were first translated by Japan and then passed on to them. For example, the term philosophy is also translated from Japan. In this way, these fantasy novels borrow Zhuangzi's "fables", so young students read Aesop's fables first, and then read Zhuangzi's fables, thinking that it is the same as Western fantasy novels, which is also a reversal of cause and effect.

The Lotus Sutra is story after story, and there is little else to be found. But you have to pay attention! This classic has greatly influenced Chinese culture since the Southern and Northern Dynasties. The practice of these eminent monks of Shensengzhuan and Shennunzhuan is closely related to the Lotus Sutra, and also has a lot to do with Zen Buddhism. The preface of the Lotus Sutra puts the most important ones first. The Buddha’s lectures are different this time. They emit light and move the earth. The wise disciples know that the Buddha is going to speak the Great Law this time. But there are 5,000 monks who have been with the Buddha for a long time in the past and left instead. Don’t listen to them. They feel that what the Buddha said today is wrong, and they think that what the Buddha said in the past is right.Because what the Buddha said in the past is to break away from confusion and realize the truth, to break away from worries and delusions, and to realize the true self-nature.This is Hinayana Buddhism, the so-called Four Noble Truths, Twelve Links, etc., which can prove the Arhat Fruit. But the Buddha said something different today, so the five thousand monks and nuns left.In other words, they fall into the Hinayana way, take the small road, only know about emptiness, not to mention the wonderful existence, and do not know the method of dependent origination, which is called in the Buddhist scriptures-the burnt seed of the bud. When the buds are burnt, the seeds cannot sprout and cannot bear fruit. When the five thousand disciples left, the Buddha was silent and let them go without saying anything. After leaving, the Buddha said: "These people have no branches and leaves, only the truth." It means that these people who are left behind can bear the Dafa.

The first product - "Dongfang Xianrui", this is my name. The original translation does not have divisions, (Buddhist scriptures are called titles, ordinary books are called chapters.) For example: The Diamond Sutra has thirty-two chapters, which were divided into chapters by Prince Zhaoming. When Buddhist scriptures talk about a method, they sometimes refer to the West. For example, when talking about the Pure Land School, the West must be mentioned; the Lotus Sutra talks about the East showing auspiciousness. What is the reason?Another topic. What is Huatou? This is the huatou. Cantonese, don’t get it wrong, you think it’s a small question, and you mutter it in your heart, all day long, thinking that it’s called Cantonese, it’s a joke. The Buddhist scriptures are big talk, why come from the east? When it comes to the realm of Nirvana, it is the auspiciousness of the West.Friends who like to study the Book of Changes should pay more attention to the principles of this direction, this is related, not accidental.

"It is the dharma that abides in the Dharma seat, and the phenomena in the world live forever." Therefore, the five thousand monks had to withdraw from the seat and could not listen to it.Those monks specialize in renunciation and practice. As a result, the true Dharma taught by the Buddha is in the world, and it is not separated from the world. The mundane and the supramundane are everywhere. "It is the dharma that lives in the dharma seat" is in line with the Tao, it is there originally. "Permanent existence in the world" is always in harmony with the Tao, and it is not necessary to be born to become the Tao.

In the third parable of Volume Two of the Lotus Sutra, Shariputra said in verse: "The World Honored One knows my heart, and speaks Nirvana from the evil. I eliminate all the false views, and I have been certified in the empty law. At that time, the heart said to myself, and I have achieved extinction, but now I am aware of it, not the actual extinction." First of all, Shariputra told the Buddha. Said: I was wrong, the World Honored One knows my extent. At that time, all my evil and delusional thoughts were completely eliminated, thinking that this was Nirvana. The Hinayana here is indeed the highest state of Nirvana.Don't look down on Theravada Buddhism, Mahayana Buddhism is based on Theravada Buddhism. We talk about cultivating certificates, but if we haven’t done the first step, it still won’t work!Shariputra is seeking to improve after reaching this state, so he admits his mistake.

Shariputra said: In the process of practicing, I completely stopped evil thoughts and reached the realm of emptiness, "obtained by the law of emptiness." We often say that the four elements are all emptiness, but it is only achieved in concept. When you are hungry, knowing that the four elements are empty, why do you still feel hungry? When you get cold, you say that all four elements are empty, and the cold is empty. Yes, in theory, it is "the sex is cold in a vacuum, and the sex is really cold." But if you don't wear clothes, you can't stand it. What is the reason?Buddhism is not just theory.

So Shariputra reported: At that time, I realized the state of emptiness, and I thought I had attained the Tao, and I had reached the state of Nirvana as a Buddha. Now I know I was wrong, this is not really attaining Nirvana. From the theory of Buddhism, everyone knows that emptiness is also called Nirvana, which is the realm of Arhat. The realm of letting go of all predestined relationships, not giving birth to a single thought, and being absolutely empty is called "Nirvana with Surplus Reliance", which is not the highest attainment position. The so-called fruit position, taking it now, is the effect, the result. Why is it called "You Yi Yi"?That is to say, even though it is possible to let go of all predestined relationships and not give birth to a single thought, the thought that is the root of karma, the seed of ten thousand predestined relationships is still there, but it has not exploded. It will still erupt when it is stimulated by other causes and conditions, because the seeds and habits are all there. Therefore, in the highest realm of arhats, life and death can be divided into stages, and they can only take long vacations during the process of life and death. He can go through 84,000 kalpas and stay in the state of samadhi. From our point of view, it is 84,000 kalpas, but for him, it is just a flick of a finger.

I don’t know if you have any experience with this. After several hours of meditation, you must feel that your eyes are closed for a moment. You think it’s only two or three minutes. In fact, several hours have passed. So time is relative, and the 84,000 great kalpas are only in the flick of a finger. When Master Hanshan was 30 years old, he went to Mount Wutai with Zen Master Miaofeng to live in a hut. At that time, he saw the snow and ice of Wanshan Mountain, and the surroundings were quiet, so he just practiced.Later, when the weather was warm and the ice melted, the gully water rushed, and its sound was like thunder.Master Hanshan heard the sound in silence, like thousands of troops dispatching troops, and felt very noisy, so he asked Master Miao, who said: "The environment comes from the heart, not from outside." I heard the ancients said: "Thirty years of hearing The sound of water does not turn the root of mind, which is the proof of Guanyin's perfect penetration." So he went to the single-plank bridge over the stream by himself and sat on it every day.One day, sitting on the bridge, I suddenly forgot myself, and the sound disappeared. Since then, I have been in exile. But one time, at the home of Pingyang prefect "Hu Gong" who had converted to his disciples, he said, "I'll take a rest." Just sat on the bed for five days. The servants at home couldn't wake him up until five days later, when the refugee disciple came back from outside and knocked on the bell, Master Hanshan came out of concentration, but he didn't know where he was. This is another Huatou - Wuji. After a while, though, he knew where he was again. Master Hanshan is at this level. However, this is not the truth, so he himself said: "It is easy to walk in the bushes, but it is difficult to turn around under the curtain of the moon." This is the route of walking meditation. What is a bush of thorns? My heart is in a mess and I have many delusions. It's like being in a bush of thorns, full of thorny thorns, it's not too difficult. He said that it is certainly difficult to let go of the mess in my heart, but it is not the most difficult. What is the hardest part? When your kung fu has reached a certain level, when you sit up and feel clear and empty in your heart, you often think that this is it, but in fact, it falls into the Hinayana fruit. What Shariputra is talking about is this realm. At this time, it is very, very difficult to turn around. I advise you to read the Chronicle of Master Hanshan often, especially the students who have become monks. The experience of other people's practice is really told, which can inspire you.Of course, people are good at learning, studying Buddhism, and practicing well, and they are good at everything, and nothing is wrong. In addition to commenting on Confucianism, he also commented on The Doctrine of the Mean, Laozi, and Zhuangzi; there are also Qimen Dunjia, Geography, Fengshui, Yin and Yang, Eight Diagrams, fortune-telling, etc., and he knows everything.Such a monk, no wonder there was a sensation at that time. This paragraph is related to what Shariputra said, so I propose to talk about it. In the preface of the Lotus Sutra, there are many chapters to refer to.Why did those disciples know that they couldn't listen to the Buddha before he spoke? It can be seen that the five thousand monks are not simple. When they see that the situation is not right, they think that their way out of the world is to learn nothing, and they don't want to listen to other things, which can be regarded as foresight. What is the reason? These words of the Buddha were all spoken after the five thousand monks withdrew from the banquet. The third metaphor, for the convenience of this lecture, I named it—the metaphor of the house on fire and the three carts. The three realms are like a house on fire. The Buddha said that these living beings and sons were unwilling to leave the burning house, so they had to find a way to say "there are three carts".The three vehicles are said to be the three vehicles——the voice-hearing, the enlightenment, and the bodhisattva.A teacher like Buddha loves all living beings as he loves his children, but none of his children are sensible and obedient. There is no other way but to cheat and induce. If we induce sentient beings to go to those cars, there should be no one in the car hijacking the plane and hijacking us to hell. (Audience laughs) "All Buddha Dharma Collections are all sentient beings. They are all my sons. They are equal to the Mahayana. No one is allowed to be saved." The Buddha said, I love all sentient beings, just like parents love their children. a certain person. "Etc and Mahayana", give the Mahayana way equally, and will not ignore those who treat me badly. It's like a big car, regardless of whether it's good or bad, it must be loaded with them. "All of them are saved by the Tathagata's extinction." Here comes the problem. This sentence is to use the Buddha's extinction method to actually obtain the same Nirvana state as the Buddha. Why don't you say that all of them will be saved by the extinction of the world? This is a careful choice of words. The Tathagata is the body of the Buddha, that is, he has reached the realm of the metaphysical dharmakaya. "It is all sentient beings who are freed from the three realms, and they are equipped with entertainment such as meditation and liberation." The Buddha said, if all living beings can escape from the fire house of the three realms (desire realm, form realm, and formless realm), what toys should I give these children? Woolen cloth?Meditation, liberation, etc.In other words, all the methods taught by the Buddha are convenient, which means that children can get a happy state first. Therefore, meditation, liberation, etc. are not the fruits of Nirvana and Bodhi, but only the practice of practice. "They are all of one kind, and the sanctuary exclaims that they can produce the pure and wonderful first happiness." The final and highest principle is "one kind", that is, the real reality of the Tathagata; "one kind", that is, the Buddha seed.My practice is praised by all the sages of the past and future.Although I compare these to toys, don't get me wrong, this toy is not ours, what merits does it have?what effect? "Being able to produce the first joy of being pure and wonderful," this is the first happiness in the world. It is pure and wonderful, but it is not the ultimate. The Buddha said: "All living beings are my sons." I love all living beings as if I love my own son. "Deep in the happiness of the world, without a mind of wisdom. There is no peace in the three realms, just like a house on fire." All sentient beings are greedy for short-term and unreal happiness in the world, and have no wisdom.Because people living in the Three Realms are like suffering in a burning house, suffering every day, moment, and second. "Now these three realms are all mine. The living beings in them are all my sons. Now here, there are many troubles, and I alone can save them." The story came again. The Buddha said there is no self, and here he said that there is a self; When he was born, he said that there is a self-"I am the only one in the sky and the world." , I, net".Here in the Lotus Sutra, "come" is also mentioned, but it is also for the convenience of explaining. So now he says: The Three Realms belong to me.Isn't this a huatou?what reason? The second sentence is great compassion, "All the living beings among them are my sons." Why did the Buddha talk about this method?Because the world is full of pain, and no one can save this pain, only I can save it.What is this "I"?This is Huatou, pay attention! He said: I once said that when one attains Nirvana, one attains emptiness, life and death can be accomplished.I am now at the Fahua Conference, and I can tell you honestly that there is no such thing. What is extermination?Neither is extinction. "It is the dharma that lives in the dharma position, and the world is always there." Eternal is here. What's the point?Isn't this a huatou? This is still the scope of insight.Right now, I am still clearing my views. After clearing my views, I will start talking about how to work hard. The Buddhist classics we have adopted this time have already been reported to you, and I hope you will prepare them yourself. Our lectures this time are for your lifetime practice.Whether it's learning or teaching practice, it's all very important. "Getting rid of all suffering is called liberation." There are five procedures for practicing the Hinayana - precepts, concentration, wisdom, liberation, and knowledge and view of liberation.Originally studying Buddhism is to seek liberation, why do you seek liberation?Because there is pain, so I seek relief. "Where is a person to be liberated, but getting rid of falsehood is called liberation." When you leave all falsehoods, you will be liberated. Here comes the problem. Ordinary people think that illusory thoughts are delusional thoughts, and they think that if you get rid of the delusional thoughts, you will be liberated. The Shurangama Sutra clearly tells you that the five skandhas are all illusory, and you must get rid of them. Therefore, when the great arhat enters Nirvana, his body is ashes and his wisdom is destroyed.According to Buddhist scriptures, when the great Arhat was about to leave, his body would be ashes and his wisdom would be wiped out, and he would breathe out the three flavors of real fire.Just set a fire by yourself, only to see a bright light, and the body is gone. This is not fake, it can be done.Of course we can't do it because we don't have practice.A great arhat can activate the functions of earth, water, fire, and wind. With a movement of his mind, he can activate any function. He is so comfortable. This is the realm of a great arhat. We should not think that the word "illusion" refers to delusions; everything in our body and mind, even the physical world, is considered illusory. "But being away from emptiness is called liberation." But even if you reach this state of liberation, it is only called the ultimate fruit of the Hinayana. "In fact, I haven't obtained it, and I have liberated everything." Even though I did this, I still haven't completely liberated. There is a koan recorded in Zen Buddhism. A great Zen master thought he had achieved great enlightenment, but when the master passed into nirvana, he did not pass on the mantle to him;He didn't think it was a taste, and his younger brother knew it, so when the master was cremated, he called him and said solemnly: You think you have enlightened, right? Now if I cremate you and Master together, where will you meet? The brother was very unconvinced and said: You don't believe me, you light a stick of incense, and I will leave before the cigarette is finished. In other words, if I want to go, I will go, and if I want to come, I will come. The younger brother ignored him and set the master on fire. This brother also ran to cross his legs, preparing to leave by himself, indicating that he and the master can meet. This is called sitting down and standing dead.Even at this level, I still haven't realized it!The younger brother walked up to his Nirvana body, slapped his hands and said: Brother! "It is not impossible to sit, stand, stand and die. The meaning of the first teacher has not yet been dreamed of." You have the ability to go as soon as you want, but you haven't even dreamed of the true principles of Buddhism! "The Buddha said that it is a person who has not yet attained extinction." This kind of person has not really achieved the fruit of Nirvana. "This person has not attained it, because there is no superior way." This kind of person has not yet attained anuttara-samyak-sambodhi. "If I don't want to, I will make it to extinction." The Buddha's words are wonderful. He said why are these people so stupid? In fact, I don't want to teach him, it's too stupid. Why is Buddha so stingy? He answered very strangely. "I am the Dharma King, and I am at ease in the Dharma." I am the Dharma King, and in the Three Realms, I can do whatever I like. What are you talking about? It's really reminiscent of greed, hatred and ignorance. In fact, it is not the case. The Buddha is merciful. This is like the Linji stick. It deliberately stimulates everyone, deliberately does not teach everyone, to see if we can reflect on ourselves, repent, and humbly. This is the teaching method of the Buddha, but it is also the truth. "Help all sentient beings, so I appear in the world." The Buddha said that I came to this world to save sentient beings, so there is no reason for me not to teach. The reason why I don't teach it is because you can't bear it yourself, because you are not a magic weapon yourself. It's over here, this is another Huatou, you can go to it yourself, but I have already explained it. The fourth product is "Faith and Solution", please note that you can gain the Tao just by believing; but it must be true belief, not superstition, and you can also gain the Tao if you believe in the truth. The representative here is Venerable Kasyapa, who is the patriarch advertised by Zen Buddhism, who is different from Shariputra. Venerable Kasyapa is the number one in Thudha, and monks practice ascetic Thudha, which is the way of following the precepts. The Hinayana precepts include bhikkhu precepts and bhikkhuni precepts, with a preference for dhutanga practice, you should study it yourself.According to the rules of tutao practice, it is a violation of the precepts for us to sit here, because there is a taste of greed for enjoyment.Toutuo does not spend three nights in the empty sang, I am afraid that he will be nostalgic, and he has the feeling of concern; he sweeps the clothes with dung—the rags picked up in the garbage dump, and the clothes made after washing. Now Venerable Kasyapa, the number one dhutanga, got up and reported: "I wait for internal extinction, and I think I am satisfied. Only after this, there is nothing else to do. If I wait for leisure, I will not be happy to purify the land of Buddha and teach all living beings." Venerable Kasyapa reported the realm of Hinayana straightforwardly. He said that when we practice Buddhism, when we reach the "internal extinction", when we sit up and meditate, there will be no delusions in it, and no thought will arise. This is the Tao.Annihilation is to get rid of all afflictions, thinking that this is the end, thinking that one has reached home, and leaving the rest alone. As for the Mahayana realm of the pure Buddha land - pay attention!A three-thousand-thousand-thousand-thousand-world is called a land of Buddhas. It is not meant to educate a hundred or a thousand people, but to educate and transform all sentient beings in the three-thousand-thousand-thousand-thousand-thousand-thousand-thousand-thousand-thousand-thousand-worlds world to return to the Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss. This is called the Pure Buddha Land.Mahayana Bodhisattvas follow this path. How difficult!I felt that I was troublesome in the first few lectures, so why bother! But compared with the Pure Buddha Kingdom, this little trouble is nothing!Venerable Kasyapa, after hearing the Mahayana teachings, wanted to purify the land of the Buddha to educate all living beings, alas!Forgive me, I'm not happy at all, I won't do that. "So what? All dharmas are empty and silent, neither born nor destroyed, neither big nor small, without leakage and inaction. If you think about it like this, it will not produce joy." He is right, it was taught by your old man!Everything in the world is impermanent, suffering, empty, and selfless. It is neither born nor destroyed, neither big nor small, and has no leakage and no action. That being the case, why bother to save sentient beings?Wouldn't this be useful? My lectures are about Buddhism, not people.Back then, a student asked me: Do you study Zen?Why do you want to set up an association for the essence of things?I asked him: What do you think is the right way to learn Zen?He said he wanted to be like Han Shan. What Han Shan flaunts is another form, which Buddhism calls the method of demonstration.Poems by Master Han Shan: Leisurely visit eminent monks with tens of thousands of layers of misty mountains. The teacher pointed to himself and hung a round of lights on the way home. I am very familiar with Han Shan's poems, as familiar as the Dream of the Red Chamber. When I mentioned Hanshan, I thought of Dream of the Red Chamber, why?Huatou.I smiled at my classmates and didn't want to talk about it.This kind of person is like five thousand monks who have withdrawn from the banquet. I don't bother to talk to such stupid people. "I have been waiting for the Buddha's wisdom for a long time. I have no greed, no attachment, no desire, and I am in the Dharma. This is the ultimate." Venerable Kasyapa blamed himself. He did not seek progress in the wisdom of the Buddha's Dharma. I think I have reached the ultimate in Buddhism. These are his words of confession. "I will wait for the long night and practice the law of emptiness, and I will escape from the three realms, suffering from afflictions, and live in the final body, and I will have nirvana." He said that we are really small tools, like groping in the long night, thinking that we have reached the realm of emptiness, and that we have reached the ultimate goal. After all, if you think you have jumped out of the Three Realms, it is fine if you are not in the Five Elements. But pay attention!Venerable Kasyapa is qualified to say this. We only understand Buddhism, but not those who really practice diligently. We are not qualified to say this.Venerable Kasyapa achieved the "final body", this physical body will not come in the division of life and death, and enter the scope of changing life and death. What is the change of life and death?Incarnation realm. But not the incarnation of Buddha. The state of Arhats is to live in the last body, and when they are about to leave, they always say the same few words. I am very happy to see: "Long in the world, my life is over, what I have done, the holy life has been established, and there will be no future." The so-called establishment of morality, meritorious service, speech, and reputation are all there. But this is the ultimate result of the Hinayana, not the ultimate Nirvana, but the remaining reliance on Nirvana. Why is this passage called Xinjiepin? What is a saravaka? It's because I didn't realize it myself, and it all depends on the teacher's teaching. We are all saravakas. After teaching the Fa for a long time, it is all the fruit of the Buddha. To truly believe in Buddhism is to believe in this. Then there is: "Buddha is also like this. Now that there is something that you want to know, those who know the joy are small. Use the power of expediency to subdue their minds. This is to teach great wisdom. Today, we have never had it. It is not what we expected before, but now we get it for ourselves, just like that poor son who gets an immeasurable treasure. There is an allusion here. Venerable Kasyapa repented to Shakyamuni Buddha above, "Now there is a rare thing, and those who know little joy, use the power of convenience to subdue their minds." The rare thing, the Buddha did it.Knowing that those people love the Hinayana and love to take small paths, there is no other way, so let us use a piece of candy for us to lick. Now you slap us again and say we were wrong. "It is to teach great wisdom", to learn the achievements of great wisdom. "I waited for today, but I never got it. I didn't expect it first, but now I get it." Now we understand, we are very happy, what we got by accident is not what we expected before. I thought your pockets were all gone, but I didn't expect there to be a little more.Pay attention! The Buddha has already given it to us, but how to get it?The magic weapon is not with the Buddha, but with me. "In the universe, in the universe, there is a treasure, the secret is in Xingshan." "Like a poor man, he gets an immeasurable treasure." Just like a poor man who accidentally made a fortune, I don't know how happy he is now. These paragraphs of the Lotus Sutra are all Huatou. Two great disciples with great names are the masters of asking for the Dharma of this classic, and they are asking to speak out this Dafa. One is the first in wisdom, the other is the first in tuduo, and both of them have reached the realm of Hinayana ultimate fruit. But the rank of Venerable Shariputra and the rank of Venerable Kassapa have different names.Xinjiepin is to believe in this, and it must be trustworthy. Why this arrangement?is a big problem.Let me tell you a little bit first, the Buddha believes that the Mahayana path is still based on the Hinayana, and we will talk about dependent origin after the emptiness of nature. You haven't achieved this step yet, so don't talk about it below. This is followed by the fifth chapter of Juan III, "Medicine Herbs".This problem is so big!In the second volume of Zhiyuelu, the story about medicinal herbs is recorded: "Manjusri Bodhisattva ordered Shancai to gather medicine one day and said: Those who are medicines will gather the future. Shancai looks around the earth, and there is nothing that is not medicine. But he came to Bai and said: "There is nothing that is not a medicine."Shu said: "It's the medicine who picks the future."Shancai then picked up a stalk of grass on the ground and gave it to Manjusri. But then he showed it to the public and said: This medicine can kill people, and it can also live people. "Manjusri Bodhisattva asked Shancai Boy to collect medicine, and Shancai Boy squatted on the ground, grabbed a piece of grass and gave it to Master. What is it? He said: "Which one of the grasses and trees on the earth is not medicine?" What is the Buddha talking about in this medicinal herb parable? The human body is made of flesh. It's not made of iron. If you don't take medicine, you will be sick all over your body. Many people say: Since you practice cultivation, you have to rely on kung fu to get rid of illnesses.sure! It takes decades to get rid of illnesses. These decades are not cultivating the Tao, but cultivating illnesses. Is it worth it?Therefore, heavy medicine must be used. This is tangible medicine, and invisible medicine is everywhere. Thousands of methods are all medicine. After this product is over, a "prediction product" suddenly comes, and the Buddha grants prophecies one by one, giving a lot of favors. He called all the major Hinayana disciples, touched his head and said: You!Hundreds of years later, you will become a Buddha, what kind of Buddha will you be called? You!Hundreds and hundreds of kalpas later, they will become Buddhas... In the end, everyone will become Buddhas. It never occurred to them that they would become Buddhas themselves. What trick is this playing? This is a prophecy for the Hinayana people, but it has not been revealed to the Mahayana Bodhisattva. What does it mean?Another big talk. So far, this sutra is like this, it is very lively, and it does not talk about half a sentence of Buddhism. It is not like the Shurangama Sutra, nor is it like the Lotus Sutra, nor is it like the Huayan Sutra, nor is it logical like the consciousness-only sutra .The Lotus Sutra doesn't make sense, and just gives a lot of prophecies. How can you keep reading it?This is the Hinayana part, so that's it.After the Hinayana part is finished, the prophecy will begin. There is a big talk here. Then another scene began - "Huacheng Yupin".A city is transformed, a very wonderful city of transformation. This is the way of Mahayana, and the protagonist of Huacheng is called Datong Zhisheng Buddha. This Buddha has a great background. He has sixteen princes, all of whom have become Buddhas.Amitabha is also his prince, Shakyamuni Buddha is the youngest prince, the sixteenth son.Datong Zhisheng Buddha was originally a king, but later he became a monk. He brought sixteen princes to become monks, and later they all became Buddhas. If a person achieves the same level as Datong Zhisheng Buddha, this person will be perfect. How should I say it?In the worldly law, as a king, he has blessings, wealth, longevity, happiness, and happiness. The sixteen princes are all good, and they can enjoy the blessings of the worldly law. Just make a cross. This is the story told by the Buddha in the third volume of the Lotus Sutra, the seventh chapter of Huacheng Yupin, which takes us back many billions of kalpas ago. The Buddha said that I was destined to "achieve anuttara-samyak-sambodhi in the land of Saha" under this old king. What is the reason for this? This is the cause of the past, the cause and effect of the third life. "After my extinction, there will be disciples who don't hear the scriptures and do not realize what Bodhisattvas do." After my Nirvana, some disciples don't believe in this scripture, and don't know this Dharma book. It is really called the Mahayana Bodhisattva way. I don't know what to do, what to do. "Unconsciously, Bodhisattva's actions," this sentence is very serious. Don't think that we understand the Bodhisattva's actions after studying many scriptures and reading many Mahayana scriptures. In fact, there are big problems. When we talk about fulfilling vows in the future, we will discuss it a lot. "From the thought of the birth and death of the merits and virtues I have obtained, I should enter Nirvana." He said that after I passed away in the future, some disciples did not understand and were arrogant. Wrong, as Master Bodhidharma said about Emperor Wu of Liang, "The small fruit of man and heaven has the cause of omission." Donating tens of thousands of yuan, thinking that you have done meritorious deeds, is actually a trivial matter. "I became a Buddha in other countries, and I have a different name." After I passed away in this world, I went to another country, and I still became a Buddha there. Of course, I am not called Shakyamuni Buddha, but I have other names. (These names have been mentioned in the Avatamsaka Sutra, what is the name of Shakyamuni Buddha in the upper world; what are they called in another place... there are so many.) So, don't think that Nirvana is gone. "It is a person who enters Nirvana despite the thought of birth and death, but seeks the wisdom of the Buddha in the other land and hears the scriptures." If my disciples understand this truth and realize Nirvana, after leaving this world, they will be reborn. If you go to another land, you can seek the Mahayana way there, and you will have the opportunity to hear the teachings of the Lotus Sutra again. At the end of this story, the Buddha raised a big question, which is often mentioned in Zen Buddhism. Shakyamuni Buddha told about his father, Datong Zhisheng Buddha, who meditated and learned Zen there. "Datong Zhisheng Buddha, sitting in the Taoist place for ten kalpas, if the Dharma does not appear, you will not be able to become a Buddha." Datong Zhisheng Buddha's practice is so hard!Sitting there to settle down is not a day or two, but ten small kalpas, this skill is still worth it!Sitting there without moving, and attaining this level of practice and samadhi, is still not enlightenment.Bodhi has not appeared, has not been enlightened, and cannot become a Buddha. Buddhism is inseparable from samadhi, let alone meditation. However, sitting in samadhi for many kalpas may not necessarily be useful. This is a famous verse in the Lotus Sutra.Young students, don't just sit down and learn, what's the use of just sitting there? What's the use of not falling over?If the Dharma is not present, one cannot become a Buddha.Be careful, don't do it casually, and damage your body. Although the earth is full of medicine, if you don't know how to use it, it will be even worse.
