There are six strategic matters: move the Nandan Weicheng to Bazhai ；改筑思恩府治于荒田；改凤化县治于三里；增设隆安县治；置流官于思龙，以属田宁；增筑守镇城堡于五屯。”事下，本兵持之，户部复请覆勘，学士霍韬等上疏曰：“臣等广人也，是役也，臣等尝为守仁计曰：'前当事者，凡若三省兵若干万，梧州军门费用军储若干万，复从广东布政司支用银米若干万，杀死、疫死官兵、土兵若干万，仅得田州小宁五十日，而思恩叛矣。'今守仁不杀一卒，不费斗米，直宣扬威德，遂使思、田顽叛，稽首来服。虽舜格有苗，何以过此？乃若八寨贼、断藤峡贼，又非思、田之比。八寨为诸贼渊薮，而断藤峡为八寨羽翼也。广西有八寨诸贼，犹人有心腹病也。八寨不平，则两广无安枕期也。今守仁沉机不露，一举平之。百数十年豺虎窟穴，扫而清之，如拂尘然。臣等是以叹服守仁能体陛下之仁，以怀绥思、田向化之民；又能体陛下之义，以讨服八寨、断藤梗化之贼：仁义两得之也。夫守仁之成功，有八善焉：乘湖兵归路之便，兵不调而自集，一也。因思、田效命之助，劳而不怨，二也。机出意外，贼不能遁，所诛者渠恶，非滥杀报功者比，三也。因归师无粮运费，四也。一举成功，民不知扰，五也。平八寨、平断藤峡，则极恶者先诛，其细小巢穴，可渐德化，得抚剿之宜，六也。八寨不平，则西而柳、庆，东而罗旁、禄水、新宁、思平之贼，合数千里，共为窟穴，虽调兵数十万，未易平伏，今八寨平定，则诸贼可以渐次抚剿，两广良民可以渐次安业，纾圣明南顾之忧，七也。韩雍虽平断藤峡贼矣，旋复有倡乱者，八寨乃百六十年所不能诛之剧贼。今守仁既平其巢窟，即徙建城邑以镇定之，则恶贼失险，后日不能为变，逋贼来归，且化为良民矣。诛恶绥良，得民父母之体，八也。或议：'守仁奉命有事思、田，遂剿八寨，可乎？'臣则曰：昔吴、楚反攻梁，景帝诏周亚夫救梁。亚夫不奉诏，而绝吴、楚粮道，遂破吴、楚，而平七国，安汉社稷。传曰：'阃以外，将军制之。'又曰：'大夫出疆，有可以安国家、利社稷，专之可也，古之道也。'是故亚夫知制吴、楚，在绝其食道，而不在于救梁；是故虽有诏命，有所不受。今守仁知思、田可以德怀也，遂纳其降而安定之。知八寨诸贼未易服也，遂因时仗义而讨平之。虽无诏命，先发后闻可也，况有便宜从事之旨乎？或曰：'建置城邑，大事也；区处钱粮，户部职也；不先奉命而辄兴工，可乎？ '臣则曰：昔者范仲淹之守西边也，欲筑大顺城，虑敌人争之，乃先具版筑，然后巡边，急速兴工，一月成城。西夏觉而争之，已不及矣。守仁于建置城邑之役，不仰足户部而后有处，其以一肩而分圣明南顾之忧，不以为功，反以为过，可乎？臣等目击八寨之贼，为地方大患百数十年，一旦仰赖圣明，任用守仁，以底平定，不胜庆忭，今兵部功赏未行，户部覆题再勘，臣恐机会一失，大功遂阻，城保不筑，逋贼复聚，地方可虑。是故冒昧建言，唯圣明察焉。 " 九月，疏谢奖励赏赉。 赏思、田功也。九月初八日，行人冯恩赍捧钦赐至镇，故有谢疏。 与德洪、畿书：“地方事幸遂平息，相见渐可期矣。近年不审同志聚会如何，得无法堂前今已草深一丈否？想卧龙之会，虽不能大有所益，亦不宜遂尔荒落；且存饩羊，后或兴起，亦未可知。余姚得应元诸友相与倡率，为益不小。近有人自家乡来，闻龙山之讲，至今不废，亦殊可喜。书到，望遍寄声，益相与勉之。九十弟与正宪辈，不审早晚能来亲近否？诱掖接引之功，与人为善之心，当不俟多喋也。魏廷豹决能不负所托，儿辈或不能率教，亦望相与夹持之。” 十月，疏请告。 先生以疾剧，上疏请告，具言：“臣自往年承乏南、赣，为炎毒所中，遂患咳痢之疾。岁益滋甚。其后退休林野，稍就医药，而疾亦终不能止。自去岁入广，炎毒益甚。力疾从事，竣事而出，遂尔不复能兴。今已舆至南宁，移卧舟次，将遂自梧道广，待命于韶、雄之间，夫竭忠以报国，臣之素志也。受陛下之深恩，思得粉身齑骨以自效，又臣之所日夜切心者也。病日就危，而尚求苟全以图后报，而为养病之举，此臣之所以大不得已也。”疏入，未报。 谒伏波庙。 先生十五岁时尝梦谒伏波庙，至是拜祠下，宛然如梦中，谓兹行殆非偶然。因识二诗。其一曰：“四十年前梦里诗，此行天定岂人为？徂征敢倚风云阵，所过如同时雨师。尚喜远人知向望，却惭无术救疮痍。从来胜算归廊庙，耻说兵戈定四夷。”其二诗曰：“楼船金鼓宿乌蛮，鱼丽群舟夜上滩。月绕旌旗千嶂静，风传铃木九溪寒。荒夷未必先声服，神武由来不杀难。想见虞廷新气象，两阶干羽五云端。”是月与豹书：“近岁山中讲学者，往往多说勿忘勿助工夫甚难。问之，则云：'才著意，便是助；才不著意，便是忘；所以甚难。'区区因问之云：'忘是忘个甚么？助是助个甚么？'其人默然无对，始请问。区区因与说：'我此间讲学，却只说个必有事焉，不说勿忘勿助。必有事焉者，只是时时去集义。若时时去用必有事的工夫，而或有时间断，此便是忘了，即须勿忘。时时去用必有事的工夫，而或有时欲速求效，此便是助了，即须勿助。其工夫全在必有事焉上用，勿忘勿助，只就其间提撕警觉而已。若是工夫原不间断，即不须更说勿忘；原不欲速求效，即不须更说勿助。此其工夫何等明白简易，何等洒脱自在。今却不去必有事上用工，而乃悬空守着一个勿忘勿助，漭漭荡荡，只做得个沉空守寂，学成一个痴騃汉，事来，即便牵滞纷扰，不复能经纶宰制。此皆由学术误人之故，甚可悯矣。'” 又与邹守益书曰：“随处体认天理，勿忘勿助之说，大约未尝不是。只要根究下落，即未免捕风捉影。纵令鞭辟向里，亦与圣门致良知之功尚隔一尘。若复失之毫厘，便有千里之缪矣。世间无志之人，既已见驱于声利辞章之习，间有知得自己性分当求者，又被一种似是而非之学兜绊羁縻，终身不得出头。缘人未有真为圣人之志，未免挟有见小欲速之私，则此种学问极足支吾眼前得过。是以虽在豪杰之士，而任重道远，志稍不力，即且安顿其中者多矣。” 祀增城先庙。 先生五世祖讳纲者，死苗难，庙祀增城。是月，有司复新祠宇，先生谒祠奉祀。过甘泉先生庐，题诗于壁曰：“我祖死国事，肇礼在增城。荒祠幸新复，适来奉初蒸。亦有兄弟好，念言思一寻。苍苍见葭色，宛隔环瀛深。入门散图史，想见抱膝吟。贤郎敬父执，童仆意相亲。病躯不遑宿，留诗慰殷勤。落落千百载，人生几知音。道同著形迹，期无负初心。”又题甘泉居曰：“我闻甘泉居，近连菊坡麓。十年劳梦思，今来快心目。徘徊欲移家，山南尚堪屋。渴饮甘泉泉，饥食菊坡菊。行看罗浮云，此心聊复足。”与德洪、畿书：“书来见近日工夫之有进，足为喜慰！而余姚、绍兴诸同志又能相聚会讲切，奋发兴起，日勤不懈，吾道之昌，真有火燃泉达之机矣，喜幸当何如哉！此间地方悉已平靖，只因二三大贼巢，为两省盗贼之根株渊薮，积为民患者，心亦不忍不为一除剪，又复迟留二三月；今亦了事矣，旬月间便当就归途也。守俭、守文二弟，近承夹持启迪，想亦渐有所进。正宪尤极懒惰，若不痛加针砭，其病未易能去。父子兄弟之间，情既迫切，责善反难，其任乃在师友之间。想平日骨肉道义之爱，当不俟于多嘱也。”与何性之书：“区区病势日狼狈，自至广城，又增水泻，日夜数行不得止。至今遂两足不能坐立，须稍定，即逾岭而东矣。诸友皆不必相候。果有山阴之兴，即须早鼓钱塘之舵，得与德洪、汝中辈一会聚，彼此当必有益。区区养病本去已三月，旬日后必得旨。亦遂发舟而东，纵未能遂归田之愿，亦必得一还阳明洞，与诸友一面而别，且后会又有可期也。千万勿复迟疑，徒耽误日月。总及随舟而行，沿途官吏送迎请谒，断亦不能有须臾之暇。宜悉此意，书至即拨冗。德洪、汝中辈，亦可促之早为北上之图。伏枕潦草。” 十一月乙卯，先生卒于南安。 是月廿五日，逾梅岭至南安。登舟时，南安推官门人周积来见。先生起坐，咳喘不已。徐言曰：“近来进学如何？”积以政对。遂问道体无恙。先生曰：“病势危亟，所未死者，元气耳。”积退而迎医诊药。廿八日晚泊，问：“何地？”侍者曰：“青龙铺。”明日，先生召积人。久之，开目视曰：“吾去矣！”积泣下，问“何遗言？”先生微哂曰：“此心光明，亦复何言？”顷之，瞑目而逝，二十九日辰时也。赣州兵备门人张思聪追至南安，迎入南野驿，就中堂沐浴衾敛如礼。先是先生出广，布政使门人王大用备美材随舟。思聪亲敦匠事，铺梱设褥，表里裼袭。门人刘邦采来奔丧事。十二月三日，思聪与官属师生设祭入棺。明日，舆榇登舟。士民远近遮道，哭声振地，如丧考妣。至赣，提督都御史汪鋐迎祭于道，士民沿途拥哭如南安。至南昌，巡按御史储良材、提学副使门人赵渊等请改岁行，士民昕夕哭奠。 八年己丑正月，丧发南昌。 是月连日逆风，舟不能行。赵渊祝于柩曰：“公岂为南昌士民留耶？越中子弟门人来候久矣。”忽变西风，六日直至弋阳。先是德洪与畿西渡钱塘，将入京殿试，闻先生归，遂迎至严滩，闻讣，正月三日成丧于广信，讣告同门。是日，正宪至。初六日，会于弋阳。初十日，过玉山，弟守俭、守文，门人栾惠、黄洪、李珙、范引年、柴凤至。 二月庚午，丧至越。 四日，子弟门人奠柩中堂，遂饰丧纪，妇人哭门内，孝子正宪携弟正亿与亲族子弟哭门外，门人哭幕外，朝夕设奠如仪。每日门人来吊者百余人，有自初丧至卒葬不归者。书院及诸寺院聚会如师存。是时朝中有异议，爵荫赠谥诸典不行，且下诏禁伪学。詹事黄绾上疏曰：“忠臣事君，义不苟同；君子立身，道无阿比。臣昔为都事，今少保桂萼时为举人，取其大节，与之交友。及臣为南京都察院经历，见大礼不明，相与论列。相知二十余年，始终无间。昨臣荐新建伯王守仁堪以柄用，萼与守仁旧不相合，因不谓然，小人乘间构隙。然臣终不以此废萼平生也。但臣于事君之义，立身之道，则有不得不明者。臣所以深知守仁者，盖以其功与学耳。然功高而见忌，学古而人不识，此守仁之所以不容于世也。盖其功之大者有四：其一，宸濠不轨，谋非一日，内而内臣如魏彬等，嬖幸如钱宁、江彬等，文臣如陆完等，为之内应；外而镇守如毕真、刘朗等，为之外应；故当时中外诸臣，多怀观望。若非守仁忠义自许，身任讨贼之事，不顾赤族之祸，倡义以勤王，运筹以伐谋，则天下安危未可知。今乃皆以为伍文定之功，是轻发纵而重走狗，岂有兵无胜算，而濠可徒搏而擒者乎？其二，大帽、茶寮、浰头、桶冈诸贼寨势连四省，兵连累岁。若非蚤平，南方自此多事。守仁临镇，次第底定。其三，田州、思恩构衅有年，事不得息，民不得已，故起守仁以往，定以兵机，感以诚信，乃使卢、王之徒崩角来降，感泣受杖，遂平一方之难。其四，自来八寨为两广腹心之疾，其间守戍官军，与贼为党，莫可奈何。守仁假永顺狼兵，卢、王降卒，并而袭之，遂去两广无穷之巨害，实得兵法便宜之算。夫兵凶战危，守仁所立战功，皆除大患，卒之以死勤事。夫兵政国之大事，宜为后世法，可以终泯其功乎？其学之大要有三：一曰'致良知'实本先民之言，盖致知出于孔氏，而良知出于孟轲性善之论。二曰'亲民'，亦本先民之言，盖《大学》旧本所谓亲民者，即百姓不亲之亲，凡亲贤乐利，与民同其好恶，而为洁矩之道者是已。此所据以从旧本之意，非创为之说也。三曰'知行合一'，亦本先民之言，盖知至至之，知终终之，只一事也
