As for the theory of "four nothings", it was lost in Longxi.而天泉夜论，其师不以为不然，故滋后人口实，然其中正有可详求者。阳明之所为“四无”，固异于龙溪之所为“四无”。龙溪之所谓“四无”，以无为无者也，荡而失归，恍惚者托之矣。故其后为海门、为石梁，而密云悟之禅人焉。阳明之所谓“四无”，以无为有、以有为无者也。前乎此者，濂溪之“无极而太极”；后乎此者，蕺山之“无善而至善”。 “上天之载，无声无臭”，“形而上者谓之道”，是不可名者也。故知善知恶是良知，为善去恶是格物。统中人以上、中人以下，循循焉俱由此二言入。教人有序，虽卓立喟叹之颜子不能出其范围，固当以绪山之所守为正矣。致良知实功唯为善去恶，故曰：“致知在格物。”其小异于朱子者，正心诚意之事并摄入格致中，举存心、致知不分为二，是固《中庸》“尊德性”、“道问学”之本旨也。 善乎，郑端简之言曰：“王公才高学邃，兼资文武，近世名卿，鲜能及之。特以讲学故，众口交訾。盖公功名昭揭，不可盖覆。唯学术邪正，未易铨测。以是指斥，则谗说易行，娼心称快尔。”今人咸谓公异端陆子静之流。嗟乎，子静岂异端乎！以异端视子静，则游、夏纯于颜、曾，而思、孟劣于雄、况矣！公所论叙《古本大学则言》、诸书具在，学者虚心平气，反复融玩，久当见之。宁庶人反时，又能不顾九族，身任其事，不逾旬朔，卒平大难。宣德、乐安之变有如公者，景陵无羁靮之劳矣。 万历十二年十月，大学士申时行等疏曰： 前御史、詹事建白先臣王守仁、陈献章从祀学宫，下九卿、科道官议。诸臣不能深唯德意，杂举多端，或且诋訾守仁。奉旨：“王守仁学术原与宋儒朱熹互相发明，何尝因此废彼。”大哉王言！亦既明示之矣。而议者纷纷，迄无定论，又命廷议归一具奏。 仰唯王上重道崇儒，德旨屡下，深切著明。今覆议乃请独祀布衣胡居仁，臣等窃以为未尽也。彼诋訾守仁、献章者，谓之“伪学”、“伯术”，原未知守仁，不足深辨。 其谓各立门户者，必离经叛圣，如老、佛、庄、列之徒而后可。若守仁，言“致知”出于《大学》，言“良知”本于《孟子》。献章言“主静”，沿于宋儒周敦颐、程颢。皆阐述经训，羽翼圣真，岂其自创一门户耶？事理浩繁，茫无下手，必于其中提示切要以启关钥，在宋儒已然。故其为教，曰“仁”曰“敬”，亦各有主。独守仁、献章为有门户哉！ 其谓禅家宗旨者，必外伦理、遗世务而后可。今孝友如献章，出处如献章，而谓之禅，可乎？ 气节如守仁，文章如守仁，功业如守仁，而谓之禅，可乎？其谓无功圣门者，岂必著述而后为功耶？盖孔子尝删述《六经》矣，然又曰“予欲无言”，曰“吾无行而不与二三子”。门人颜渊最称好学矣，然于道有以身发明者，比于以言发明，功尤大也。 其谓崇王则废朱者，不知道固相成，并行不悖。盖在朱时，朱与陆辩，盛气相攻，两家弟子有如仇敌；今并祀学宫。朱氏之学，昔既不以陆废，今独以王废乎？ 大抵近世儒臣，褒衣博带以为容，而究其日用，往往病于拘曲而无所建树；博览洽闻以为学，而究其实得，往往狃于见闻而无所体验。习俗之沉锢，久矣！今诚祀守仁、献章，一以明真儒之有用，而不安于拘曲；一以明实学之自得，而不专于见闻。斯于圣化，岂不大有神乎！若居仁之纯心笃行，众议所归，亦宜并祀。我国家二百余年，理学名臣，后先辈出，不减宋朝。至于从祀，乃止薛瑄一人，殊为阙典。昔人有云：“众言淆乱，折诸圣。”伏唯圣明裁断，益此三贤，列于薛瑄之次，以昭熙代文运之隆。 制曰：“可”。 康熙某年，汤斌答陆陇其书曰： 手教：孔、孟之道，至朱子而大明。学者但患其不行，不患其不明；但当求入其堂奥，不当又自辟门户。再读《学术辨》云：天下有立教之弊，有末学之辨。又云泾阳、景逸未能尽脱姚江之藩篱，圣人复起，不能易也。独谓弟不欲学者诋毁先儒，是诚有之，然有说焉。 弟少无师承，长而荒废，茫然无所知。窃尝泛滥诸家，妄有论说。其后学稍进，心稍细，甚悔之。反复审择，知程、朱为吾儒正宗，欲求孔、孟之道而不由程、朱，犹航断港绝潢，而望至于海也。 若夫姚江之学，嘉、隆以来，几遍天下矣。近有一二巨公昌言排之，不遗余力，姚江之学遂衰，可谓有功圣道。然海内学术，浇漓日甚，其故何欤？盖天下相尚以伪久矣。今天下深明理学者固众，随声附和者实多。更有沉溺利欲之场、毁弃坊隅、节行亏丧者，亦皆著书镂板，肆口讥弹，曰“吾以趋时局”也。亦有心未究程、朱之理，目不见姚江之书，连篇累牍无一字发明学述，但抉摘其居乡居家隐微之私，以自居卫道闭邪之功。夫讦以为直，圣贤恶之，唯学术所关。不容不辨。如孟子所谓“不得已”者可也。今舍其学术而毁其功业，更舍其功业而讦其隐私，岂非以学术精微未尝深讨，功业昭著未易诋诬，而发隐微无据之私，可以自快其笔舌？此其用心亦未光明矣。在当年，桂文襄之流不过同时忌其功名，今何为也？责人者，贵服人之心。自古讲学，未有如今日之专以谩骂为能者也。 或曰：“孟子尝辟杨、墨矣，杨、墨何至“无父无君”？孟子必究其流弊而极言之。此圣贤卫道之苦心也，何怪今之君子欤？ 窃以为不然。孟子得孔子之心传者，以其知言、养气、性善、尽心之学，为能发明圣人之蕴也。盖有所以为孟子者，而后能辟杨、墨，息邪说，闲先圣之道；若学术不足继孔子，而徒日告于人曰：“杨、墨无父无君也”，“率兽食人也”恐无以服杨、默之心而熄其方张之焰矣。孟子曰：“今之与杨、墨辩者，如追放豚，既入其苙，又从而招之。”则知当日之与杨、墨辩者亦不乏人矣，今无片言只字之存，则其不足为轻重可知也。然则杨、墨之道不传于今者，独赖有孟子耳。今不务为孟子之知言、养气、崇仁义、贱功利，而但与“如追放豚”之流相颉颃焉，其亦不自重也已。 台谕云：阳明尝比朱子于洪水猛兽，是诋毁先儒莫阳明若也。今亦黜夫诋毁先儒者耳，庸何伤！ 窃谓阳明之诋朱子也，阳明之大罪过也，于朱子何损？今人功业文章未能望阳明之万一，而止效法其罪过，如两口角骂，何益之有？恐朱子亦不乐有此报复矣。故弟之不敢诋斥阳明者，非笃信阳明之学也，非博长厚之誉也，以为欲明程、朱之道者，当心程、朱之“心学”。程、朱之学，穷理必极其精，居敬必极其至，喜怒哀乐必求中节，视听言动必求合礼，子臣弟友必求尽分。久之，人心咸孚，声应自众。即笃信阳明者，亦晓然知圣学之有真也而翻然从之。若曰能谩骂者即程、朱之徒，则毁弃坊隅、节行亏丧者皆将俎豆洙、泗之堂矣，非弟之所敢信也。 弟年已衰暮而学不加进，唯愿自体勘求，不愧先贤。或天稍假以年，果有所见，然后徐出数言就正海内君子未晚。此时正未敢漫然附和也。 斌号潜庵，唯州人，孙征君钟元门人。 论曰：道固一贯，其流则万析焉。既精，支离是患。
