This is not easy for the previous kings.In the past, there was a person who was suitable for Yichuan, and when he saw that he was sent out and sacrificed to the wild, he said, "It's not as good as this one hundred years ago!"The gift is dead first!Zhenguan Xiuli, specially changed the old chapter to gradually widen the grace of Weiyang, and did not follow the code of Zhusi.及弘道之后,唐元之间,[51]韦氏弑中宗立温王重茂,改元唐龙。今避玄宗御名上字故称唐元。国命再移于外族矣。礼亡征兆傥见于斯。开元初补阙卢履冰尝进状,论丧服轻重,敕令佥议,于时群议纷挐,各安积习。太常礼部奏依旧定。陛下运稽古之思,发独断之明,特降别敕,一依古礼,事符典故,人知向方。式固宗盟,社稷之福。更图异议,窃所未详。愿守八年明旨,以为万代成法。职方郎中韦述议曰,天生万物惟人最灵,所以尊尊亲亲别生分类,存则尽其爱敬,没则尽其哀戚。缘情而制服,考事而立言。往圣讨论亦已勤矣。上自高祖下至玄孙以及身,谓之九族。由近而及远,称情而立文,差其轻重,遂为五服。虽则或以义降或以名加,教有所重,理不逾等,百王不易,三代可知。若以匹敌言,外祖则祖也,舅则伯叔父之列也,父母之恩不殊,而独杀于外氏者,所以尊祖祢而异于禽兽也。且家无二尊,丧无二斩,持重于大宗者,降其小宗。为人后者减其父母之服,女子出嫁杀其本家之丧,盖所存者远所抑者私也。今若外祖及舅更加服一等,堂舅及姨列于服纪之内,则中外之制相去几何?废理殉情,所务者末。且五服有上杀之义,必循原本方及条流。伯叔父母本服大功九月,[52]今伯叔父母服是加服。从祖父昆弟亦大功九月,并以上出于祖其服不得过于祖也。从祖祖父母从祖父母从祖昆弟皆小功五月,以出于曾祖,服不得过于曾祖也。族祖祖父母族祖父母族祖昆弟皆缌麻三月,以出于高祖,服不得过于高祖也。堂舅姨既出于外曾祖,若为之制服,则外曾祖父母及外伯叔祖父母亦宜制服矣。外祖加至大功九月,则外曾祖父母合至小功,外高祖合至缌麻。若举此而合彼,事则不均。弃亲而录疏,理则不顺。推而广之,则与本族无异矣。且服皆有报,则堂外甥外曾孙侄女之子皆须制服矣。圣人岂薄其骨内背其恩爱?盖本于公者薄于私,存其大者累其细,义有所断不得不然,苟可加也亦可减也。往圣可得而非,则礼经可得而隳矣!先王之制谓之彝伦,奉以周旋犹恐失坠,一紊其叙,庸可止乎?礼部员外郎杨仲昌议曰,按仪礼为舅缌等。文贞公魏徵议同从母例加至小功五月。 [53]详见下条。虽文贞贤也,而周孔圣也,以贤改圣,后学何从?今之所请,正同征论。如以外祖父母加至大功,岂不加报于外孙乎?外孙为报服大功,则本宗庶孙又用何等服邪?窃恐内外乖序,亲疏夺伦,情之所沿何所不至?昔子路有姊之丧而不除,孔子曰,先王制礼行道之人皆不忍也,子路除之。此则圣人援事抑情之明例也。记不云乎毋轻议礼。时玄宗手敕再三,竟加舅服为小功,舅母缌麻,堂姨堂舅袒免。宣宗舅郑光卒,诏罢朝三日。御史大夫李景让上言,人情于外族则深,于宗庙则薄,所以先王制礼,割爱厚亲。士庶犹然,况于万乘亲王公主宗属也?舅氏外族也,今郑光辍朝日数与亲王公主同,非所以别亲疏防僣越也。优诏报之,乃罢两日。夫繇韦述杨仲昌之言,可以探本而尊经。繇崔沔李景让言,可以察微而防乱。岂非能言之士深识先王之礼,而亦目见武韦之祸思永监于将来者哉? 宗庙之制始变于汉明帝。服纪之制始变于唐太宗。皆率一时之情,而更三代之礼。后世不学之主踵而行之。 唐人所议服制似欲过于圣人。嫂叔无服,太宗令服小功。曾祖父母旧服三月增为五月,嫡子妇大功增为期。众子妇小功增为大功。舅服缌增为小功。[54]新唐书,初太宗尝以同爨缌而嫂叔乃无服。舅与从母,亲等而异服。诏侍中魏徵礼部侍郎令狐德棻等议。舅为母族,姨乃外戚他姓,舅服一等姨乃五月,古人未逹者也。于是服曾祖父母齐衰三月者,增以齐衰五月,适子妇大功增以期,众子妇小功增以大功,嫂叔服以小功五月,报弟妻及夫兄同舅服缌增以小功。然律疏舅报甥服犹缌。显庆中长孙无忌以为甥为舅服同从母,则舅宜进同从母报。又古庶母缌,今无服。且庶母之子昆弟也,为之杖齐,是同气而吉凶异,自是亦改服缌。父在为母服期,高宗增为三年,妇为夫之姨舅无服,玄宗令从夫服。又增舅母缌麻,堂姨舅袒免,而弘文馆直学士王元感遂欲增三年之丧为三十六月,[55]旧唐书张柬之传。何休注公羊传,言鲁文公乱圣人制,欲服丧三十六月。皆务饰其文欲厚于圣王之制,而人心弥浇,风化弥薄。不探其本而妄为之增益,亦未见其名之有过于三王也。是故知庙有二主之非,则叔孙通之以益广宗庙为大孝者绌矣。知亲亲之杀礼所繇生。则太宗魏徵所加嫂叔诸亲之服者绌矣。唐书礼乐志,言礼之失也,在于学者好为曲说,而人君一切临时申其私意,以增多为尽礼,而不知烦数之为黩也。子曰道之不明也,贤者过之。夫贤者率情之偏,犹为悖礼,而况欲以私意求过乎三王者哉?[56]记曰始死,三日不怠,三月不解,期悲哀三年忧,恩之杀也。圣人因杀以制节,此丧之所以三年。贤者不得过,不肖者不得不及,此丧之中庸也。 宋熙宁五年,中书门下议,不祧僖祖,秘阁校理王介上议曰,夫物有无穷而礼有有限,以有限制无穷,此理之所以起,而天子所以七庙也。今夫自考而上何也?必曰祖。自祖而上何也?必曰曾祖。自曾祖而上何也?必曰高祖。自高祖而上又何也?必曰曾祖及见则闻而知之者也。今欲祖其祖而追之不已,祖之上又有祖,则固有无穷之祖矣。圣人制为之限,此天子所以七庙,自考庙而上至显祖之外而必祧也。自显祖之外而祧,亦犹九族至高祖而止也。皆以礼为之界也。五世而斩故也。丧之三年也,报罔极之恩也。以罔极之恩为不足报则固有无穷之报乎?何以异于是,故丧之罔极而三年也,族之久远而九也,庙之无穷而七也,皆先王之制弗敢过焉者也。记曰品节斯,斯之谓礼。易于节之象曰,君子以制度数议德行,唐宋之君岂非昧于节文之意者哉? 贞观之丧服,开元之庙谥,与始皇之狭小先王之宫廷而作为阿房者同一意也。 所后者为所后之亲,[57]上斩章言所后者是也。郑注衍一为字。谓所后为出而为后之人。 为人后者于兄弟降一等,自期降于大功也。兄弟之子报之亦降一等,亦自期为大功也。若子者兄弟之孙报之亦降一等,自小功降而为缌也 与尊者为一体,不敢以外亲之服而废祖考之祭,故绌其服也。言母党则妻之父母可知。 考父也。既言父又言
