Chapter 39 11. New development trends

To build a well-off society in an all-round way, the "12th Five-Year Plan" will face many challenges. The size of the middle class is growing at an alarming rate.Urbanization will provide a broad space for domestic demand, and accelerating the urbanization process will also become a part of economic restructuring. China needs to clearly see the problems and challenges brought about by rapid urbanization in order to better control its development direction. Among China's largest cities, ten have or will soon have more than 10 million inhabitants: Beijing, Shanghai, Chongqing, Shenzhen, Tianjin, Chengdu, Wuhan, Guangzhou, Hangzhou, and Xi'an.

Nothing seems out of reach in China today, but given China's ambitious goals and challenges, large-scale urban reforms will not be easy. At the same time, the Chinese government must also consider the balance between urban and rural areas and the development of remote western regions.
