这个故事让我想起了我自己在90年底的选择。当时，我像步卓月一样，有了一定的资金，已经可以到国外去留学了。而当时的新东方是一个非常小的学校，不能给人以成就感，但可以满足温饱；如果做下去也可以做好，不做下去也不可惜。用小平的理论来说，也就是具备了"就业能力"。我在那个时候也面临留学还是继续做下去的选择，也有过类似的迷茫。而这个时候的思考和选择，必将决定我的一生。 我当时是从两个方面来思考和判断并做出决定的：第一，首先反问自己为什么要去留学，留学能给我带来什么东西……我无法把这一连串的问题回答到底。比如说我去留学，想读个社会学或者是读国际关系的学位，于是我问自己：读完国际关系然后想干什么？读国际关系本身不是目的，读完了想做什么才是目的。因为这个问题我回答不了，所以我不能贸然决定留学。 第二，在决定留学还是不留学的痛苦思考中，我反复问自己：在办学校和出国留学之间，做哪个我得心应手，感觉最快乐？很明显，在国内开这个学校，每天做着自己最喜欢做的事情，我最快乐。这是我灵魂深处的声音。所以，我决定选择做学校，而不是办留学。
