On the evening of June 7, 1936, Zhang Taiyan followed the doctor's advice, and with the support of his wife Tang Guoli, he went out for a walk, but unexpectedly passed out.Under the doctor's rescue, although Zhang Taiyan was out of danger, he has been bedridden ever since.Six days later, on the 13th, Zhang Taiyan suddenly had a high fever of 40 degrees. In the early morning of the next day, two pieces of rotten meat with nasal bacteria were spit out from the mouth, and the condition deteriorated again. Tang Guoli, Li Gengen, American doctor Su Maier and others were all around. The students of Zhang's Chinese Studies Seminar held burning incense and knelt on the open space outside Zhang's bedroom door to pray for the teacher. The low sobs of the students rang out. At 7:45, Zhang Taiyan died of illness, and Tang Guoli cried heartbreakingly, heartbroken.Outside the door, the students were crying loudly, and their grief was loud.

According to Feng Ziyou's records, when Zhang Taiyan was dying, it is said that many relatives and friends nearby witnessed a ball of auspicious light flying from the top of Zhang Taiyan's head to the window. Zhang Taiyan's last words were: "If a foreign race enters Zhongxia, the descendants of generations will not eat their official salary." After Zhang Taiyan died of illness, the "Zaobao" reported the news and said, "The government and the public across the country express their condolences."The national government allocated 3,000 yuan as Zhang Taiyan's funeral expenses, and his friends during his lifetime came to express their condolences. With the efforts of Zhang Ji, Ju Zheng, Feng Yuxiang and others, the Nanjing National Government decided to hold a state funeral for Zhang.

The full text of the state burial order is as follows: Su Confucian Zhang Binglin, honest in sex and knowledgeable in knowledge. In his early years, he advocated the national revolution with words, but he was in the dark, and he was righteous.Afterwards, he resisted the imperial system, ran to support the law, prepared for hardships and dangers, and remained steadfast.Ju Heng studies the classics, chooses the mystery, and studies the ultimate attainments. There are philosophies beyond the past, so he attaches great importance to teaching.I hear that I have passed away, and I deeply regret it, so I should give him a special state funeral in accordance with the State Burial Law.The life stories are stored and prepared for the Museum of History, which is used to show the country's sincerity of adoring rites and elders. This order.

After Zhang Taiyan passed away, according to the custom of Yuhang, the coffin should be covered with silk, and the silk should be tied into a knot, which is called Jieyao.Mrs. Tang Guoli used red, yellow, blue, white, and black silk in five colors, arranged in the coffin in the order of the five-color flags, and tied the knot for Zhang Taiyan. At that time, everyone thought it was inappropriate, and they were afraid of offending the authorities, because the national government had issued a state funeral order and used the blue sky and white sun flag at that time.Tang Guoli said: "Mr. Sun Yat-sen also approved of the five-color flag, why not use it. Mr. Taiyan contributed to the victory of the 1911 Revolution and the birth of the five-color flag, and was imprisoned. Therefore, it is most appropriate to use five-color silk to form a knot for him. If you are afraid, I will take the responsibility."

In Shanghai, Lu Xun, a disciple who was seriously ill, wrote two or three things about Mr. Taiyan and two or three things about Mr. Taiyan to commemorate his teacher. Lu Xun passed away only two days after the latter one was completed.

The cemetery of Zhang Taiyan is next to the tomb of Zhang Cangshui, a national hero who fought against the Qing Dynasty, which was chosen by Zhang himself during his lifetime. When Zhang Taiyan was under house arrest by Yuan Shikai, he chose to be buried next to Liu Bowen's tomb. But in 1936, when the national crisis was serious, Zhang Taiyan chose to be buried beside Zhang Cangshui's tomb after his death.Zhang Taiyan wrote the postscript for "Zhang Cangshui Collection" before his death, and highly praised Zhang Cangshui. He once sighed and said: "I will not be punished by the public, but I will be a herdsman."

However, due to the outbreak of the Anti-Japanese War, the state funeral had to be put on hold for the time being. Zhang's family temporarily buried him in the back garden of Zhang's family in Suzhou before fleeing south. In November 1937, Suzhou fell, and the Japanese army broke into Zhang Taiyan’s back garden. They saw Zhang Taiyan’s tomb, but there was no tombstone. The old guards of Zhang's family tried to dissuade them, but they were severely beaten. After a Japanese military officer learned that this was Zhang Taiyan's tomb, he stopped the Japanese army.A few days later, the military assistant came to pay homage, and set up a wooden pillar beside the tomb, and wrote "the tomb of Zhang Taiyan".Since then, no Japanese troops came to harass.

On April 3, 1955, under the care of Premier Zhou Enlai, the People's Government of Zhejiang Province officially held a funeral ceremony for Zhang Taiyan.According to Zhang Taiyan's last wish, his coffin was relocated to the edge of West Lake in Hangzhou, at the foot of Nanping Mountain, under Lizhi Peak, next to Zhang Cangshui's tomb. The words "Zhang Taiyan's Tomb" on the tombstone were written by Zhang himself. During the "Cultural Revolution", Zhang Taiyan's tomb was not spared either. The "rebels" dug up Zhang's tomb, took out the inner and outer coffins, pried open the coffin lid, and dragged Zhang's body (still intact) out to the ground. Rancid.Later, Zhang's remains were hastily buried at the foot of the mountain by a kind gardener.

After 1976, the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China rehabilitated Zhang Taiyan, believing that Zhang was an outstanding patriot in modern Chinese history. After that, the cemetery was rebuilt for Zhang Taiyan, and the newly found remains of Zhang Taiyan were put into the jar three days before the tomb was completed, sealed and buried in the new site of the cemetery.
