In April 1949, the People's Liberation Army was approaching the three towns of Wuhan. Wu Mi, who was at Wuhan University at the time, was faced with the problem of where to go.Chen Xujing, the president of Lingnan University, invited Wu Mi to be the dean of the school's literature, and told Chen Yinke that he had applied for the school, but he refused.Hang Liwu, Minister of Education of the Kuomintang, personally mobilized Wu Mi to become the dean of the Faculty of Arts of National Taiwan University, but Wu Mi was unmoved because he had always had different ideas from the president of National Taiwan University, Fu Sinian. His daughters asked him to go back to Tsinghua University, but he also refused. In the end, he declined the advice of his friends to give lectures in the United States, Hong Kong and Taiwan, and decided to stay in the mainland. He said: "Born Chinese, died in Chinese soil."

At this time, Xu Fengxi, the dean of Chongqing Xianghui College, sent a letter inviting Wu Mi to teach at Xianghui College. At this time, Wu Mi had the idea of becoming a monk. It happened that Wang Enyang of the Xueheng School was in charge of the Oriental Culture and Education College in Chengdu. Wu Mi wanted to study Buddhism there, and then slowly became a monk. Thus, at the end of April 1949, Wu Mi arrived in Chongqing, where he served as a professor of foreign languages at Xianghui College and concurrently as a professor of literature at Beibei Mianren College chaired by Liang Shuming.

In April 1950, after the private Xianghui College and Mianren College were abolished and merged one after another, Wu Mi was transferred to Sichuan Education College to teach. In September, the college was merged into the new Southwest Normal College in Beibei.Wu Mi became a professor in the History Department of Western Normal University, and then transferred to the Chinese Department. Wu Mi regretted his decision not to return to Tsinghua University but to Xianghui College in the future. He said: "The action is extremely wrong, and the scourge is also for the elders." In 1961, Wu Mi went to Beijing to attend a conference. He Lin told him that Zhou Yang proposed to transfer him to the Central Museum of Literature and History as a researcher, and concentrate on translating Thackeray's novels, so he was willing to accompany him to visit Zhou Yang.Wu Mi did not go.Later, when Wu Mi wrote about this incident, he said: "If you actually follow it, Zhou Yang will offend later, and Mi will be implicated. But be careful not to go. Master Fu Chuxi, after 1968, still suffers from various punishments and struggles. So how is it going?"
