Home Categories Biographical memories Talking about Great Literati in the Republic of China: Those Masters of Chinese Studies
Wu Mi's English teacher once told Wu Mi: "There is nothing like hesitation that destroys people's moral strength so powerfully." From then on, Wu Mi realized that cultivation depends on accumulation over time. Therefore, from then on, he used this to encourage himself, worked harder, paid attention to introspection when studying, and paid special attention to cultivating the establishment and perfection of his own moral idealism beliefs.Wu Mi has been constantly encouraging, self-motivating, introspecting, introspecting, and self-discovering all his life, all of which are reflected in his diary.

Wu Mi has a "parable of two horses": "In today's world, we should not follow ideals, but count on utilitarianism. Active activities in the WTO, in order to achieve success. This is the same. Or embrace ideals, then witness the difficulties of the current situation, Quietly retiring, but caring for the whole body, focusing on the art of writing, for self-pleasure, and having special achievements, or wonderful works. This is another way. Unfortunately, Mi wants to have both. I love the ideals of Chinese ethics and morals in the past , but also want to maintain and develop this ideal with new methods of active activities in the West, so they have to pay attention to efficiency, have to count achievements, and have to seek merit. These two often run counter to each other and conflict, and they want to use their own strength Taking care of it, it is like two horses galloping side by side. Mi will step on the horse's back with his left and right feet, and hold the reins of the two horses in one place with his second hand, forcing the two horses to advance side by side. However, my strength will not continue. If the reins are not held tightly, and the two horses part ways, Mi will be punished by the chariot being torn apart. This is the tragedy of Mi's life."

Wu Mi wrote a group of "Twelve Poems of Kongxuan", which he distributed to students when he taught "Comparison of Chinese and Western Poetry". It is said that each capital of this group of poems alludes to a woman related to Wu Mi.Wu Mi loves it very much. This kind of writing is reminiscent of "Jinling Twelve Beauties Poem Mystery".When commenting on the collection of poems of his teacher Wu Mi, Qian Zhongshu said: Wu's poems contain "too much of himself", which is almost like the author's resume, and even "occasionally publicizes his family's ugliness in public".

Wu Mi was in love with Mao Yanwen all his life.Once he published his love poem in a newspaper, in which there was a sentence "Wu Mi loved Mao Yanwen bitterly, and people from three continents were shocked to hear it".Everyone felt that something was wrong, so they asked Jin Yuelin to persuade him.Jin said: "We don't understand your poems, but the content is about your love, and it involves Mao Yanwen. Going to the bathroom in the morning, but we don’t promote it.” Wu Mi said angrily: “My love is not going to the bathroom.” Jin Yuelin said: “I didn’t say it was going to the bathroom, I said it’s a private matter that shouldn’t publicity."

Once, Wu Mi and Mao Yanwen made an appointment to meet in a hotel, and the two talked very happily, but they didn't realize that it was raining heavily outside the window, it was getting late, and they missed the car back.Wu Mi suggested that Mao Yanwen go to bed and rest.Wu Mi said to Mao Yanwen: "I am opposed to Zhang Sheng, and I am in favor of Baoyu. Jia Baoyu never touches sister Lin." That night, Wu Mi and Mao Yanwen slept on the same bed, but Wu Mi adhered to the principle of "do no evil." The ancient adage of "moving" shows the style of a modest gentleman, and takes care of Mao Yanwen in every possible way.Afterwards, Wu Mi solemnly wrote this matter in his diary.

Wu Mi has been constantly correcting herself and fighting against her inner self throughout her life, so that she has been rigorous all her life and never indulged herself. In the early 1930s, before Wu Mi went to Europe for further study, his colleagues held a farewell party for him. Zhu Ziqing was so drunk that he vomited continuously during the dinner. After Wu Mi saw it, she was filled with emotion. She felt that she was too reserved and never dared to drink too much. After Mao Yanwen and Xiong Xiling got married, Wu Mi turned his love for Mao Yanwen into poetry and wrote 38 "Confession Poems".After these poems were published, Wu Mi also told the poems to the students in class, which became the laughing stock of the students.Qian Zhongshu also mentioned this matter in a letter to Wu Mi's daughter Wu Xuezhao: "The former teacher was sincere and honest, and he had no city in his chest. He often explained it to his classmates with his romance novels. It was spread by word of mouth. I thought it would be helpful.” At that time, in order to comfort the teacher who was broken in love, Qian Zhongshu presented him with a poem that said: “There are endless floating lives, but you are still suffering yourself, and who will pay for the ruthless tears.”

Wu Mi kept the habit of keeping a diary all his life. His diary is beautiful in writing, unique in discussion, full of true temperament and profound insights on world affairs. Its precious historical value and fascinating "good-looking" degree are highly praised by many scholars.Wu Mi is extremely frank in his diary, never concealing what he does and thinks, and constantly analyzing, introspecting, and deeply introspecting himself. In 1964, Wu Mi's daughter Wu Xuezhao went to Sichuan to visit her father. When she was leaving, Wu Mi told her daughter at Neijiang Railway Station that she wanted to write her own chronicle. He said: "The content only seeks truth, truth!"

Tang Zhenchang believes that Mr. (Wu Mi) was taught by the West, worships Rousseau, and his self-report and self-disclosure are just like Rousseau's writing. This is something that traditional Chinese literati cannot do.The husband is full of emotion and understanding of the Tao, he dissects himself very extensively, and adds that he is weak by nature, "planning but can't stop", so he often regrets when he encounters troubles.
