Memoirs of Peiqi Gerrard 葛佩琦 1088Words 2018-03-16
At 5:00 pm on April 2, 1980, I went to the home of Comrade Hu Yaobang to appeal. (The detailed process of this petition is described in my book "The Second Thousand and One People's Letters Reviewed by the General Secretary" [People's Daily (Overseas Edition) on November 17, 1985]. In order to connect the context, Just a brief introduction here.) His family lives in an alley in Dongcheng, Beijing. There are no plainclothes patrols in the alleys, and no armed guards at the gates. There was an electric bell on the red-painted gate, and when I pressed the bell, a guard came out.He asked who am I looking for?I said: I am here to visit General Secretary Hu.He turned around and went back. Then a cadre came out and asked me what's the matter?I informed him of my name and purpose of my visit. He said: I know your name, do you have the materials?I said: Take it; I handed him a letter of appeal of about 500 words. He said: Comrade Yaobang is receiving guests and has no time to meet you.Tonight, I will transfer the materials on your behalf, and at 5 o'clock tomorrow afternoon, you can see how it is handled.

I went on time the next afternoon. As soon as I rang the bell, the cadre came out, and he handed me a big envelope with a red frame. And said: Take it to the Organization Department of the Central Committee to meet Vice Minister Chen Yeping. It was almost dusk, and my eyes were a little blurred.I took the envelope and turned it home, and looked under the electric light. The envelope was written vertically with a red pencil: on the left was the Organization Department of the Central Committee; in the middle was Vice Minister Chen Yeping; on the side was Hu Yaobang's signature.I opened the envelope and saw that Comrade Yaobang had given instructions in my appeal letter.

The next morning I took Comrade Yaobang's instructions and went to the Organization Department of the Central Committee.Comrade Ren Xiaobin, Secretary of Vice Minister Chen, received me.He said: Vice Minister Chen went to the Secretariat of the Central Committee for a meeting. How to solve your problem is to be decided by Vice Minister Chen.Secretary Ren gave me his phone number. And said: Call if there is something wrong. Two days later, I called Secretary Ren.He said: Vice Minister Chen has designated a special person to meet you, and has confirmed the time and place of the meeting.I went there on time and met a bureau-level leader of the cadre review bureau. He said: The "review conclusion" of Renmin University of China held that "it is not wrong to classify you as a rightist." Why do you disagree?I said: The "review conclusion" of Renmin University is based on the false statements against me that were published in the newspaper in 1957. I did not say those words, and the newspaper did not sign and agree before publishing them. , has no legal effect.Of course I disagree with the "review conclusion" based on words that have no legal effect. The leader asked again: You said you didn't say those words, what evidence do you have?I said, I have personal and documentary evidence. On May 27, 1957, after the "National People's Congress Weekly" published those words, I went to the Renmin University Party Committee to make corrections.Comrade Nie Zhen, deputy secretary of the party committee and vice president, met me. On June 8, 1957, the "People's Daily" published the words that framed me. On June 9, I wrote to the People's Daily to request corrections. The leader finally said: Regarding the question you raised, we will instruct the relevant parties to review it again, and the materials found will meet with you.

In late July 1980, the Rightist Office of Renmin University of China let me see the rechecked materials, including the correction letter I wrote to the People’s Daily on June 9, 1957.I copied the correction letter and sent it to the Party Central Committee and the Beijing Municipal Party Committee and other relevant units. The issue of correcting my misclassification as a rightist has been put on the agenda of the relevant units.
