At the beginning, Liu Mingchuan, the governor of Taiwan, was in charge of Fanjiang, and the brain industry was the most important in the middle road, so he and his son Chaodong jointly cultivated the wilds along the mountains, which is called Linhe.It enters Fanjie in the east, reaches the old reclamation land in the west, along the Dajia River in the north, and reaches Jida Mountain in the south, extending for tens of miles.So the line was opened, the tenants were recruited, the fields were cultivated, and the damage was slightly reduced, and the production was also increasing day by day.In the twenty-first year, something happened in Taiwan, and the government ordered troops to rise up.Thousands of brave men from the village were recruited, their own salaries were prepared, and Wen Rong, the younger brother of the clan, was ordered to station them in Changhua.已而下诏割台，文武多去，四郊俶扰，分逻各地，故无盗贼患。既见势蹙，谋内渡，而母老不堪涉风涛，匿迹销声，居于幽翳，唯日侍慈帏，教子侄，极天伦之乐，故世称贞士焉。 连横曰：阿罩雾处彰化内山，地与番接，故人多尚武。而林氏能部勒之，戮力致果，功在旗常，是皆干城之选也。然数十年来，林之子孙说礼乐而敦诗书，济济跄跄，蜚声艺苑，信乎江山之助也。闲灵之气，纬武经文，顾、陆之风，犹未泯焉。 林占梅 林占梅字雪村，号鹤山，淡水竹堑人。始祖三光以明季自同安来台，居于今台南府治檨子林，数迁至竹堑。祖绍贤，垦田习贾，复办全台盐务，富冠一乡。有子七，长祥瑞，生占梅，早卒，季父祥云抚之。占梅少颖异，读书知礼，无纨袴气，进士黄骧云奇之，妻以女。年十一，挈游京师，出入缙绅门，学乃日殖。性豪迈，好交名下士，济困扶危，糜万金不少惜。道光二十五年，英人犯鸡笼，沿海戒严，倡捐防费，得旨嘉奖，遂以贡生加道衔。二十三年，防堵八里坌口，又捐巨款，事竣，论功以知府即选。二十四年，嘉彰各邑漳、泉械斗，募勇扼守大甲溪，绝其蔓延，诘奸宄，护闾阎，出资抚恤，赏戴花翎。咸丰三年，林恭之变，台、凤俱乱，北路震动，奉旨会同台湾道办理全台团练，又以捐运津米，即捐三千石，奏准简用浙江道。四年，艇匪黄位踞鸡笼，以克复功，加盐运使衔。 同治元年春，彰化戴潮春起事，淡水同知秋曰觐被戕于东大墩，进略大甲，窥淡水，境内土匪亦窃发，民心惶惶，多走避。占梅独筹维危局，故无害。初，潮春设八卦会，势日盛，占梅知其必发，集绅商，筹团练，为豫防计，曰觐不之善也。及曰觐南下，占梅即出资，备器械，讨军实，修城濠，募勇士，以生员郑秉经、贡生陈缉熙、职员翁林萃董其事，联络各庄，命勇首蔡宇率练勇守要害。部署甫定，而警报至，城中无主，咸议敛资通款，以缓其来，或言弃城走。占梅独排众议，曰：“淡水为财赋之区，彼必来争。即令行贿，安能保其不至？既至而又何如？我能往，彼亦能往，走将安之耶！今与诸君约，不如以通款之资，为战守之费。其济诸君之功也，不济吾以死继之。”众曰诺。占梅即以家资十数万为饷糈，城中绅商亦踊跃输将。于是共拥候补通判张世英权厅篆，遣人造省，请大吏，示进止；率众至城隍庙，刑牲设誓，愿共存亡，民心始定。五月，以蔡宇率勇四百名，复大甲。陈缉熙偕行，请张世英驻军翁仔社。遣人结东势角罗冠英，以抚内山一带，而自巡淡南，为声援。旋奉巡抚徐宗幹檄准布政使，颁总办台北军务钤记，通饬所属。时北门外苏、黄二姓械斗，地方俶扰。占梅止之，禽其渠，其尤不逞者送官惩办，斗始息。然城中游民多，颇喜乱。饬各街造籍，严管束，日给口粮。所费不资，而军需又巨，称贷以应，不足割腴田充之，凡数十万金，产几破。二年春，勇首蔡宇克牛骂头、梧栖等汛，占梅之策也。梧栖为通海之埠，殷商聚集，占梅以为进规彰化之道，潜结郊户杨至器。二月，取之，乘势至山脚庄，张世英亦自内山来，首尾相应。当是时，官军多驻城附近，相持久，各罢敝。占梅议进兵，为忌者所阻，宗幹催之，上书陈其事。略曰：“贼本乌合之众，死据孤城，其势难久。我军前后进剿，非不能战，乃至今未克，诚以诸君皆由鹿港而进，贼已备识虚实故也。若得省垣遣一大员，由淡水登岸，沿途招选兵勇，以壮声势，占梅当统练勇数千，同时南下，剿抚并行，彼将闻风胆落，不战而平。兵有先声而后实者此也。”宗幹韪之，遂以丁曰健为台澎兵备道。十月，至竹堑，与占梅议进兵。占梅自率精锐二千，扼山脚庄，拔茄投，攻大肚，进驻溪南，纵降将入城为内应。潮春久处斗六门，城中议降，股首江有仁持不可。十一月初三日，占梅以前锋林忠艺、林尚等攻南门，与官军会破之，遂复彰化。曰健入城，旋往鹿港，以占梅所部驻城中。曰健之行军也，胁从各庄多痛剿，占梅辄请宥，全活甚众。十二月，振旅归，潮春就灭。事闻，加布政使衔。福建督抚以占梅急公好义，品学兼优，奏请简用，得旨召见。病辞，遂不出。占梅工诗书，精音乐。军兴之时，文移批答多出其手，暇则弹琴歌咏，若无事然。筑潜园于西门内，结构甚佳，士之出入竹堑者无不礼焉，文酒之盛冠北台。著《琴余草》八卷，未刊，宗干序之，又有《潜园唱和集》。同治四年卒，年四十有九。弟汝梅字若村，少入泮。光绪六年，巡抚岑毓英创造大甲溪桥，赞襄最力，及建省后，督办铁路清赋，有名于时。 连横曰：侯官杨浚新修《淡水厅志》，其文多谬，乃复挟其私心，以衡人物，亦何足以征信哉？林占梅为一时之杰，倾家纾难，保障北台，忌者多方构陷，占梅竟以愤死。浚不于此时为之表白，而列其人于志余，谓颇有一发千钧之力。夫一发千钧，厥功多矣，列之志余，不亦小哉？同安林豪曰：“占梅力排众议，投袂而前，悉群虏于目中，运全局于掌上，屡收要隘，再复坚城。以视夫阶下叩头者，其人之贤不肖何如也。”连横曰：林豪之论，贤于杨浚。作史须有三长，而知人论世，尤贵史德，而后不至颠倒也。
