Chapter 133 Ge Peiqi's "Leaving People Tears"

Anti-Rightists 叶永烈 1958Words 2018-03-14
Among a group of old gray buildings stood a new professor building. In the summer of 1990, I came there. After knocking on the door, it took a long time to find someone slowly coming to open the door. The shambling elder with frost on his head standing in front of me was none other than Ge Peiqi.Even though he had poor eyesight, he recognized me, held my hand tightly, and led me into the house. He told me that on December 25, 1985, he left the shack where he had lived for ten years. His new residence is two bungalows, 29 square meters, which can be regarded as an improvement. Now, he lives in the newly built professor building—moved in on November 26, 1989.Although he is still alone, he has a spacious living room of forty-two square meters.

From the prison in Shanxi, to the 8-square-meter hut in Beijing, to the 29-square-meter bungalow, to today's 42-square-meter professor's new residence, this very vividly outlines the gradual improvement of Ge Peiqi's situation. Ge Peiqi showed me a stack of manuscripts. "This is my memoir, tentatively titled "Sixty Years of Hard Work." Ge Peiqi said to me, "Since the publication of your reportage, many of my old friends have known that my injustice case has been completely vindicated, and they all have Persuaded me to write a memoir. Originally, I felt that I had nothing worth writing. With the encouragement of my friends, I started to write by hand, and I wrote 100,000 words..."

Ge Peiqi said that his memoirs are mainly about historical facts, with almost no personal comments. He thought that he only did "little things".Write down what he saw and heard, and leave a little historical material for future generations. I was flipping through his memoirs, which contained memories of the "December 9th" student movement. That year—December 9, 1935, he was the head of the Peking University Student Union and one of the leaders of the "December 9th" Movement. His past history is red.He joined the Communist Party of China as early as 1938, and he is a veteran revolutionary cadre of the "March 8th style".

Just because he was a red Bolshevik, he was able to write "Sixty Years of Hard Struggle" recalling his revolutionary experience.Although he also wrote about "historical misunderstandings", he hopes that future generations will learn from it and hope that such unjust cases will not happen again in the future Before visiting Ge Peiqi, I came to an old gray building to visit his former wife Zhu Xiuling.Five years ago, I had a detailed conversation with Zhu Xiuling there, and I knew her suffering life experience. She has been bedridden for many years and is seriously ill. This time, her door was locked, and the neighbor told me that she was hospitalized. It's a pity that I can't ask her to talk about the current situation.

I deeply regret the emotional misunderstanding between this distressed couple. This is because in 1987 I published the reportage "Leaving People Tears", which wrote about the emotional misunderstanding between them. Many readers wrote to hope that they would remarry.I forwarded letters from enthusiastic readers to Ge Peiqi time and time again. He said that he is grateful for the readers' concern, but he still needs to consider whether to remarry.I know that his temper is a bit "stubborn", and it takes time for his feelings to turn around. This time, I saw Ge Peiqi and mentioned Zhu Xiuling again.

"We didn't remarry." Ge Peiqi said to me, "however, she often visits me, and I often visit her. We are both getting old, and she has been ill for a long time. Now, I hired a nanny to take care of her in the morning. I will go to the hospital to take care of her in the afternoon, get her food, wash her..." After listening to his answer, the worries in my heart dissipated.Although he and her have not formally gone through the formalities of remarriage, the emotional knot has been eliminated after all. Zhu Xiuling was already an associate professor of mathematics in the 1950s. Due to Ge Peiqi's involvement, she had not received a salary increase for more than 30 years.Ge Peiqi told me that recently the organization has added two levels of salary to her.The old house she lives in has no sanitation facilities, and the organization is planning to assign her a new house. She is seventy-six years old, her heart disease is getting worse, her legs and feet are numb, and she has to be hospitalized for a long time.

Ge Peiqi suffered from glaucoma and cataracts in prison, and her eyesight was very poor. She could not even see people facing each other in bright sunlight. Now after treatment, I can see the license plate on the bus clearly.Wearing 1600-degree glasses and holding a magnifying glass, you can read newspapers. He wrote his memoirs by himself in the midst of extreme hardship.Since last year, I have suffered from heart discomfort and often feel suffocated. At the age of seventy-nine, he is very old! I asked about his children.A smile spread across his face.Once implicated by him, the children suffered a lot, but all of them studied hard and got excellent grades.Today, the two daughters are in Japan and both have obtained a master's degree; the son and daughter-in-law are both in Canada...

Ge Peiqi has finally come to the end of his hardships, and his family has changed from "tears of separation" to "happy family". On January 13, 1993, Ge Peiqi died of illness in Beijing at the age of eighty-two.His eulogy put three red "hats" on him: "Outstanding member of the Communist Party of China, loyal communist fighter, professor at Renmin University of China". Xinhua News Agency sent a telegram for Ge Peiqi's death, and spoke highly of his life: "Comrade Ge Peiqi's life was a life of revolution. He was upright, open-minded, tenacious, and endured humiliation. Under extremely difficult circumstances, he thought of the country and the people, firmly believed in the truth, and never wavered in his belief in revolution. After the unjust case was rehabilitated , he devoted himself to the construction of the four modernizations with a new attitude, wrote books when he was ill, actively participated in social activities, and dedicated his life to the people. He was strict with himself and lenient to others, never pretending to be an old revolutionary, and always maintained the true qualities of a revolutionary .”

On January 30, 1993, "People's Daily" also published a report ""December 9th" Veterans Gathered in Beijing to Deeply Mourn Old Comrade Ge Peiqi". After Ge Peiqi passed away, the author received the newly published book "Memoirs of Ge Peiqi" from Zhu Xiuling, Ge Peiqi's wife. Before Ge Peiqi was alive, he showed me the original manuscript of this memoir.Ge Peiqi mentioned in her memoirs, "In June 1985, Shanghai "Wenhui Monthly" published "Leaving People's Tears--The Biography of Ge Peiqi" written by Comrade Ye Yonglie. Some newspapers and periodicals have excerpted and published the content of this interview ... I am grateful to the comrades who reported my deeds for their care and encouragement.” The book includes Ge Peiqi’s letter of introduction to joining the party, and Liu Zijiu, a former consultant of the Ministry of Labor and Human Resources, congratulated Ge Peiqi on the complete redress of her unjust case in June 1984 A poem I wrote can be said to summarize Ge Peiqi's life:
