Chapter 1 The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe

【About the Author】 Christian Knights in the 20th Century: CS Lewis (CS Lewis1898-1963) The full name is Clive Staples Lewis [Clive Staples Lewis]. He is a famous scholar, literary critic and writer, especially for the study of English literature in the Middle Ages and the Renaissance.Chinese readers will know him, mostly thanks to his series of children's stories "The Chronicles of Narnia". Lewis was born on November 29, 1898 in a Puritan family in Belfast, the capital of Northern Ireland. He lived a peaceful and comfortable childhood, but his mother died at the age of 9, and he was sent to a strict boarding school in England. In the grief of losing his mother and the oppression of the school environment, he naturally sought comfort in literary creation and academic research, and developed a strong interest in metaphysics and ultimate questions. In middle school, Lewis was fascinated by the world of Norse mythology in Wagner's operas. At the age of 16, in order to prepare for the entrance examination of Oxford University, he accepted the guidance of his father's old headmaster Kirk Patrick and got a good education in literature and philosophy. Classical training. But shortly after entering school to study philosophy, Lewis was drafted into the army in 1917 and transferred to the French front. In April of the following year, he was shot and injured, and was sent back to London to recuperate. He taught at Oxford University from 1925 to 1954, was elected as a Fellow of Magdalen College, Oxford University, and served as a professor of English and Literature for 29 years, teaching classical literature. From 1954 to 1963 he was Professor of Medieval and Renaissance Literature at the University of Cambridge. From February to April 1944, Lewis made "beyond the personal" radio addresses every morning on BBC Radio, explaining the Christian faith to wartime people, especially soldiers and wounded. These radio speeches were popular on both sides of the Atlantic and established his reputation as the foremost interpreter and advocate of Christianity in the twentieth century. At the age of 58, he married Helen, a divorced American woman who was 17 years younger than him, but Helen died of cancer a few years later.Lewis himself died on November 22, 1963.

Lewis used to be a materialist and a mystic. For many years he has been searching for the way of philosophy and faith. In 1931, Lewis became a Christian under the influence of his friend JRR Tolkien. He believed in Christian humanism, advocated traditional thinking and way of life, and opposed secular modernism. He expressed his religious beliefs in the form of fables, among which the more famous one is "The Devil's Letters Collection".The book is written in the tone of the devil, in which the devil teaches his nephew how to seduce human beings. Lewis wrote prolifically throughout his life and was the author of about forty books, including several critical works on English medieval and Renaissance literature. In terms of academic research, the most important works include "Fables of Love: A Study of Medieval Tradition", "Sixteenth Century English Literature", "Personal Heresy", etc. In terms of religion, there are "The Problem of Suffering", "Pure Christian Faith", etc. In terms of literary creation, there are science fiction "Space Trilogy" and "The Chronicles of Narnia".

The space trilogy included "Out of the Silent Planet" in 1938, "Perelandra" in 1943 and "That Hideous Strength" in 1945 .The story tells the encounter of the British linguist Ransom.During his journey from Mars to Venus, he was involved in the battle between good and evil in the solar system. The space trilogy is considered one of the best sci-fi trilogies of all time, but it was his series of children's stories, The Chronicles of Narnia, that won Lewis the widest readership.Lewis and Tolkien were members of the same book club and lifelong friends. They not only shared common beliefs, but also mirrored each other in literary creation. When Tolkien created Middle-earth, intending to create a mythology belonging to England, Lewis also built the world of Narnia under the care of the Lion King Aslan. It consists of seven stories and describes the rise and fall of the magical kingdom of Narnia. Published every year since 1950.Among them, "The Last Battle" published in 1956 won the Carnegie Award.

Yilin Publishing House has re-published this series of stories in 2002 and translated them as The Chronicles of the Kingdom of Narnia.Among them, the movie "The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe" was directed by Andrew Adamson, the director of "Shrek", and the filming location was chosen in the beautiful New Zealand like "The Lord of the Rings".
