Scale 井上靖 12952Words 2018-03-21
In the twenty-fourth year of Kaiyuan (the eighth year of Tianping), three Japanese monks, including Rongrui, Puzhao and Xuanlang, who drove into Chang'an, stayed in Chang'an to study.Chang'an is the capital of the Tang Dynasty, the center of Buddhism, and the home and abroad of high morality and masters gather here.Bodhidharma and Nero, who introduced Protestantism from the East India, also lived in Chang'an.Vajra Zhi Sanzang, an eminent monk of Esoteric Buddhism, entered Chang'an on the same level as Puzhao, and lived in Jianfu Temple.Wu Daoxuan painted murals in Jinggong Temple, which was also the year when Puzhao entered Chang'an.In the twenty-sixth year of Kaiyuan, Kaiyuan temples were built in various counties, and in the twenty-seventh year, Prajna Terrace was built in Chang'an.

Puzhao was in Chongfu Temple, and according to the original purpose, he specialized in the Ministry of Law.Chongfu Temple has a long history as a place of free learning and translation.Rizhao Sanzang once translated scriptures in this temple; Fa Zang's "Awakening of Faith" was also translated here; Not long ago, Zhisheng completed the writing of "Kaiyuan Shijiaolu" here. In order to universally illuminate their Dingbin, his opponent, Huai Su, once promoted the four divisions of the Law School in this temple, so there is some karma among the universal illumination in this monastery.Puzhao lives in the temple, and on the right side of the seat are Fali's "Four Fen Lulu", "Zhu Zong Yi Ji" written by Master Dingbin who annotated this book, Lingyou's "Supplementary Shi Zong Ji" and so on. The scriptures also explore the opposite school of Huai Su, and another school of Nanshan sect.Rong Rui thinks that Puzhao's way of doing research is a bit outrageous, but as a pure apprentice, Puzhao still goes his own way regardless.

Rong Rui devoted himself to the school of Master Dingbin in Da'an Guosi.Xuanlang centered on law in Horen Temple, and also practiced Tiantai and Pure Land.Since he came to Chang'an, Xuan Lang has also immersed himself in studying hard. He focuses on the pure land that has not yet been introduced to Japan, which also shows his personality. He has an amazingly clearer mind than Rongrui and Puzhao, but this aspect has also become his scourge, he can't go deep into a profession. After Rongrui and Puzhao spent more than five years in Chang'an, in the summer of the 14th year of Tianping, that is, the first year of Tang Tianbao, they suddenly had the idea of returning to China. There are two motivations for this premature determination. The first is that the Silla monk who came from Japan recently brought news of Daozhen.Daoxuan came to Japan on a ship named Dai in the eighth year of Tianping. He was invited to Japan as a precept teacher. However, due to the shortage of monks, he could not practice the precepts, so he could only lecture on "Law Cang" and "Xingshichao" in Da'an Temple. .

The two couldn't remain indifferent when they heard the news, considering that Chang'an has been in business for seven years, ten years have passed since arriving in Tang Dynasty, Rong Rui is over forty years old, and Pu Zhao is almost forty years old. Rong Rui felt that Japan's failure to implement precepts so far was completely his own responsibility. After receiving the news, the matter of inviting precept teachers took the main place in his mind again. It's not that Puzhao doesn't feel his responsibility, but he thinks that this issue should not be rushed. His concern now is another matter.Ten years in the Tang Dynasty, he has gotten used to living in this country. He concentrates on studying every day, and his expression has become more serious. His eyes are calm, but he has added some enthusiasm. The troubles about lust are over for him.

Soon, Puzhao was unexpectedly visited by Yexing.I haven't seen him for six years, and his career has become even more miserable. He already looks old, although he is only fifty-three or four years old, his body is completely old and weak. He said that he moved to Chang'an from Luoyang two years ago and lived in the Zen Ding Temple. If it were someone else, they would have been together in Chang'an for two years, and there would always be a chance to meet or hear news, but Ye Xing was an exception. Ye Xing came here specially, there must be something to do.As expected, it turned out that his copying of the scriptures had recently come to an end, and he wanted to take these scriptures back to Japan, and asked if there was any way.He spoke vaguely, and asked several times before he understood what he meant. His voice was too low to be heard, but it could be heard that his mind was heavy.Yijing's translations have been completely copied, and now he is exclusively copying the secret scriptures translated by Vajra Wisdom Tripitaka. Except for his translations in recent years, all previous translations will be copied soon.

"You want to go back, if there is a convenient boat, do you go alone?" Pu Zhao asked. "Of course, go alone, the sooner the better." Ye Xing answered very stupidly. It is not easy to find a convenient boat. Can you still say that the sooner the better. He has always been immersed in writing scriptures, as if he never thought about returning to China. Once his achievements are completed, he is eager to return to China without hesitation. A few days later, Puzhao and Rongrui went to the Zen Ding Temple to visit Karma.Ye Xing is writing at his desk.It was different from when he was in Luoyang, here, he was buried in the scriptures he had copied, and the two stood at the door temporarily, not daring to go in immediately. In the past 30 years, Yexing has copied many scriptures meticulously, arranged them neatly, and piled them up around the scriptures, like a wall, isolating himself from the secular world.

"The last time the Tang boat returned home, I asked them to take half of it back first." After Rong Rui said this, Ye Xing said without raising his head: "Of course it's good to be able to entrust someone. If this person can't be thrown into the sea to protect these scriptures in case of danger, I can't entrust him. There is no such person, there is no way, I have to bring it myself." Although the tone was low, but he spoke extremely firmly, and Rong Rui Puzhao was speechless. Two days later after visiting the industry, Rong Rui ran over with a pale face and said to Puzhao:

"Now we should do two things. The first thing is to bring back the scriptures written by Ye Xing to Japan; the second thing is to send some suitable preceptors to Japan. Nothing is more important than these two things Yes, I must do my best from now on.” There was firm determination in his tone. When Puzhao visited Yexing for the first time, Yexing said that he wanted to concentrate on his studies, and after a few years of hard work, he knew that no matter how hard he tried, he would not achieve much, so he should have started writing scriptures earlier. What once fell on Yexing, the change of concept of mission as a monk studying abroad, now also falls on Puzhao. But Puzhao had a different idea. He didn't want to replace his academic achievements by recruiting precept teachers and copying a large number of scriptures.

No matter what Puzhao thought, Rong Rui focused on finding the ideal person and hired a precept teacher to go to Japan. He believes that as long as he shows sincerity, there will always be a few people who will be willing to be hired. He said, "We'll have to try to find a pick-up boat." In the Da'an Guo Temple where Rongrui lived, there was a monk named Daohang, who was the family monk of Prime Minister Li Linfu's elder brother Lin Zong.Rong Rui envisaged that Lin Zong would apply to Li Linfu for help in preparing ships through Daohang. Puzhao finally agreed to his plan, but there were different reasons for his agreement. For a year or so, he has been uneasy about his health. After a little work, he becomes very tired, immediately develops a fever, and his appetite decreases significantly.Rong Rui thinks that he is overworked, but Puzhao thinks it's not the only reason.Because he lost confidence in his body, he was unwilling to break up with Rong Rui and the others, and stayed alone in the mainland. Whether he could go back to the country or return to the country, he didn't know how long it would take until the next time he sent an envoy to the Tang Dynasty.

In the next month or so, Rong Rui told the four monks around him about returning to Japan, and they all agreed. One of them is Dao Hang. When Rong Rui asked him to run the boat, he suddenly wanted to travel east. There are also Seng Chengguan in Chang'an, Seng Deqing in Luoyang, and Seng Ruhai in Gaoli who all agreed to go to Japan. These people were all met by Rong Rui and Puzhao after they arrived in Chang'an. Among them, it was unexpected that Daohang agreed to go to Japan, and the plan of the trip was very beneficial. Not only could he meet the prime minister through him, but also Daohang’s master was Jianzhen, an eminent monk in Yangzhou, and he could invite Jianzhen among a large number of disciples through Daohang. Recommend several suitable preachers.Although Daohang, Chengguan, Deqing, and Ruhai have studied the Vinaya for many years, they are not enough to be preceptors, so they must find someone else who has both morality and learning.

Soon, Rongrui and Puzhao met Lin Zong through Daohang, and then met Li Linfu, the prime minister of the dynasty, through Lin Zong.Lin Fu was forty years old. He belonged to the clan of the Tang Dynasty. He was born in a lower-level official. Through the relationship with the harem, he rose to the top and ascended to the high position of prime minister. It was the heyday of his life at that time.He was once rated as "cunning and intelligent, with a sweet tongue and a sword", he was good at playing tricks, and he planted the root of disaster for the decline of the Tang Empire in the following year. But this time the meeting went smoothly and things were settled easily. After the two made a request to him, his eyes were cold, and his face with thin lips was expressionless. He turned his eyes to the distance and said: "On the surface, you only talked about going to Mount Tiantai to pray for incense. Because of the inconvenience of the land route, you changed to take the sea route. If the wind is favorable, you will fly directly to Japan. If the wind is adverse, you will drift back to the mainland. You have official documents to prove it." In this way, he wrote a letter on the spot to Yangzhou Cang Cao Shenjun Li Cou, which was both an introduction and an order: "Build a big ship, prepare food and send it away." Rongrui and Puzhao decided to start from Chang'an at the beginning of winter, and Xuan Lang would of course go with them.Ye Xing went from Chang'an to Luoyang alone, and agreed to meet them at Daming Temple in Yangzhou. He has many scriptures, which are stored in various monasteries, and must be collected in his own hands before being transported to Suzhou to disembark. Rongrui, Puzhao, and Xuanlang took three Tang monks, one Gao Li monk, and left Chang'an, where they had lived for seven years. It was the beginning of winter in the first year of Tianbao. They first went to Bianzhou by land, and then went all the way to Yangzhou under the Grand Canal. On both sides of the canal, the ancient willows are withered and yellow, and the reeds beside the river have fallen away, which is a desolate winter scene. In the boat, Rong Rui was silent and silent, hugging his knees. He had a new dream, that maybe Jianzhen himself would agree to Dongyou to go to Japan as a precept teacher, so that the truth would come true, and he would bring the scriptures written by Ye Xing back to Japan. If you drop out of school and return to your country, it's just a small problem. He was very excited to get such a valuable harvest from Datang, but there was always a dull expression on his face. The closer he got to Yangzhou, the heavier Puzhao's heart became. He was still reluctant to leave Tangtu, Chang'an, Chongfu Temple, and the countless classics he hadn't read.As soon as Xuan Lang boarded the boat, he was excited. His yearning for his homeland and worries about sailing were fighting in his heart, and he became very lazy. When the group arrived in Yangzhou, it was after October.Yangzhou is a metropolis second only to Chang'an and Luoyang. There is a Metropolitan Governor's Mansion here, and a permanent interview envoy in Huainan Road.On the day they arrived in Yangzhou, they unloaded their luggage at Jiji Temple where they were staying, and immediately went to Daming Temple to visit Jianzhen. Yangzhou city is divided into two districts: one is the sub-city in the hilly area, where various government offices below the interview hall are gathered; the other is the square commercial city extending on the flat ground in the south of the sub-city, called Luocheng. The Daming Temple is located in the southwest of Zicheng. Inside the temple is the Dajialan, which is expected to hold Duoyu. There are nine-level pagodas, and it is a big temple. They met Jianzhen in a room in the temple.Behind Jianzhen stood more than thirty monks. At that time, Jianzhen was fifty-five years old, with strong bones, a burly figure, a broad forehead, regular facial features, a beautiful spirit, and a restored jawbone, showing a strong will. When Puzhao saw this Huainan Jiangzuo, a well-known eminent monk who upheld the precepts and was known as Jianzhen, he thought he looked like a Japanese military general. Dao Hang introduced them to Jian Zhen one by one.Rong Rui immediately stated his intentions: since the Dharma came to Japan, it was only limited to propagating the Dharma, and there was no one who gave the precepts. He wanted to ask the great monk to recommend a suitable precept teacher.Rong Rui told the story of Prince Shotoku again. The prince once predicted that after two hundred years, the holy religion will flourish, and now this luck will begin. He also said that there is currently a prince in Japan who believes in Buddhism and is eagerly looking for a master who can pass on the precepts. After Jianzhen listened to Rongrui's words, he immediately opened his mouth to answer. From his burly physique, his voice was unexpectedly thin and low. His tone was very sincere and had the power to touch people's hearts. "It is said that after the relocation of the former Nanyue Master Sichan, he was reincarnated as the prince of the Japanese king. He prospered the Dharma all his life and helped all living beings. I also heard that the Japanese Nagaya prince respected the Dharma. He once made a thousand cassocks and donated them to the monks. Four poems are embroidered: "The mountains and rivers are different, the wind and the moon are in the same sky, and we will send the Buddha's children to form a relationship." It can be seen that Japan is a country where Buddhism is prosperous and destined. Now Japan is here to invite us, everyone here, to see if anyone is willing to go to Japan A preacher of precepts?" No one answered. After a while, a monk named Xiangyan came out and said: "I've heard people say that to go to Japan, one has to cross the vast sea, and none of a hundred people can cross the sea. The "Nirvana Sutra" says: 'Life is rare, but China is difficult'..." Before Xiangyan finished speaking, Jianzhen spoke again: "Is there anyone else who would like to go?" Still no one answered, so Jianzhen spoke for the third time: "For the sake of Buddhism, even if the sea and the sky are far away, and the sea is vast, you should not cherish your life. Since you are not going, then I will go!" The whole audience was silent, as quiet as a pool of water, as if everything had been decided at this moment. Among the guests, only Rong Rui made a few opening remarks, and the rest had no chance to intervene.Pu Zhao felt that he was in a strange and unspeakable intoxication.More than 30 monks bowed their heads deeply, expressing their willingness to go to Japan with Jianzhen.Jianzhen called their names one by one, and the people who were called raised their heads one by one. Seventeen raised their heads, and Jianzhen stopped calling their names. In an instant, it was decided that Jianzhen would go to Japan with seventeen disciples. The Japanese monks left the Daming Temple and went back to the Jiji Temple where they stayed. From the height of the Daming Temple, they looked at the Luocheng area in the urban area. The Grand Canal runs from south to north, passes through the middle, and crosses 22 streets from east to west.Puzhao remembered a poem saying that even the soil here is fragrant. Some of the twenty-four bridges on the Dahehejiang River, the roofs of the warehouses standing on the banks of the canal, and the Dajialan, are covered in the dense shade of trees, shining coldly in the winter sun.Only now, Puzhao really felt that everything he looked at gave off a faint fragrance. He hadn't woken up from the intoxication in the room of Daming Temple. This group of people, starting from this day, took the Jiji Temple where they stayed as a base, and began to make preparations for returning home.About half a month later, Yexing also arrived in Yangzhou, and ran to Jiji Temple. Two horses and three husbands brought his luggage. On the day when Ye Xing arrived, in order to avoid the eyes and ears of the government, four Japanese monks, three Tang monks, and one Gao Li monk scattered and stayed in monasteries in the suburbs.Originally, it was already illegal for the four Japanese monks to return to China by crossing the voyage. What's more, with the addition of 18 people including Jianzhen, and 4 people including Daohang, a total of more than 20 people went to Japan without permission. In the dark. Only Rong Rui stayed in Jiji Temple, and as the contact center, Jianzhen also planned to move in immediately, Puzhao and Yexing moved to Daming Temple on the same day, and Xuanlang moved to Kaiyuan Temple. From then on, Rongrui and Puzhao met each other every day, busy preparing to cross the sea.The two brought a letter of introduction from Prime Minister Li Linfu, met with Cangcao Li Cou, and decided to build ships in Xinhe at the mouth of the Yangtze River. After the meeting, knowing that Li Cou was Li Linfu's nephew, Lin Fu assigned this important post of Cangcao to join the army to his relatives.Li Cou also got his name from his paintings. In "Records of Famous Paintings of Past Dynasties", he commented that his paintings are "sparse brush strokes and extremely charming beauty".The following year, when Lin Fu died, he was relegated to Xiangshan county lieutenant of Mingzhou because of a mistake in participating in a coup. They decided to wait for next year, the spring of the second year of Tianbao, when the wind direction is favorable, they will go to sea. Before going to sea, they will collect grain and transport it to Jiji Temple one after another. Jianzhen, whose common surname was Chunyu, was born in Jiangyang County, Yangzhou four years after Zetianwu (AD 688), which was equivalent to the second year of Emperor Jitong. There is no record in the history books about Jianzhen's childhood.Empress Wu overthrew Tang Zuo, changed the name of the country to Zhou, and proclaimed himself emperor when Jianzhen was three years old.His father once received precepts from Zen master Zhiman of Dayun Temple in Zhouzhou and practiced Zen.When Jianzhen was fourteen years old, he paid homage to Dayun Temple with his father. When he saw the Buddha statue, he was very moved. He asked his father's permission and decided to become a monk. Longxing Temple. When Shenlong was eighteen years old in the first year of Shenlong, Jianzhen received the Bodhisattva precepts from Dao'an lawyer. When Jinglong was 20 years old in the first year of his life, he made up his mind to go on a tin tour, first to Luoyang and then to Chang'an.At the age of 21, he ascended the altar in Chang'an Shishi Temple and received full precepts. The actual temple is on the west side of Zhuque Street, at the southwest corner of Taipingfang.Ji Zang, a scholar of the Three Theories, once lived here and passed away here; Gao De Shandao of the Pure Land Gate also once preached here. The preceptor is lawyer Hongjing from Nanquan Temple in Jingzhou.Hongjing was well known by the imperial court, and during the Zetian and Zhongzong dynasties, he was ordered to go out of the mountain three times to enter the palace as a preceptor. Jianzhen in his youth studied and studied Tripitaka in the eastern and western capitals. From Rongji, I learned Daoyi's "Four-Part Laws", "Notes on Karma", "Measurement of Light and Heavy Instruments", etc.; I studied the "Four-Part Laws" based on Yiwei's study of Dharma, and later listened to the Dharma from Ximing Temple's Yuanzhi. ; also Da Liang of Chang'an Guanyin Temple listened to Lishu. The biographies of Rongji and Yiwei are unknown, Yuanzhi and Fali are both disciples of the Xita sect who are well-known and knowledgeable, bearing a great reputation for a generation. At the age of twenty-six in the first year of Kaiyuan, Jianzhen first appeared on the forum and preached laws and regulations.Return to Huainan soon.At the age of 31, he taught "Xingshichao" and "Measurement of Weights and Measures", and at the age of 40, he taught "Karma Shu".He successively taught forty times the Great Law and the Commentaries, seventy times for the Law Copy, ten times each for the Light and Heavy Instruments, and ten times for the Karma Book, and taught precepts to more than 40,000 people. In Jianzhen when meeting with Rongrui and Puzhao, there is only the following record in "Tang Dahe Shangdong Zheng Biography": "Between the Jianghuai River and the Huaihe River, the only one is the master of transformation. Therefore, Buddhist temples are built to benefit all living beings. There are many things that cannot be done. loaded." When Rongrui and Puzhao completed their sailing preparations for about nine minutes, they welcomed the second year of Tianbao. The big ship is scheduled to be completed in early March, and as soon as the ship is completed, it can sail as long as there is a favorable wind. In March, pirates appeared along the coasts of Taizhou, Wenzhou, and Mingzhou, the sea lanes were blocked, and public and private navigation were completely cut off.Although the ship has been built, the date of sailing has not yet been set.So, March was sent away and April entered. At the end of April, Daohang visited and said to Rongrui and Puzhao: "We went to Japan this time to teach precepts. All the people who are traveling with us are pure in conduct. There is only one person like Ru Hai, who is dishonest and lacks in learning and practice. I don't think he should be taken with him." Gao Li's monk is like the sea, and his personality is exactly as Dao Hang said, but at that time, Rong Rui and Puzhao did not accept Dao Hang's opinion.Shortly thereafter, the monastery where the four Japanese monks lodged was officially inspected. This is because Ruhai thought that he would not be allowed to go with him, so he complained to the interview room, saying that Hang was the leader of the pirates and the Japanese monk was his accomplice. On the second day after the inspection, the arresting officer came suddenly and took Pu Zhao, Ye Xing, and Xuan Lang from the bed.Rong Rui fled to the Jiji Temple pond to hide, but was still found later, and was arrested like a water mouse.Dao Hang fled into the folk house, but was found and arrested the next day. After a long interrogation, a large amount of sea food and shipbuilding were found in Jiji Temple, which became a problem.Rongrui and Puzhao argued that they were planning to go to Guoqing Temple in Tiantai Mountain by sea, but they refused to accept it.In the end, the prime minister found the document that Li Cou had given to them, proving that they were not pirates, but they were still not released immediately.Ruhai was accused of false accusation, punished with a staff of sixty, ordered to return to vulgarity, and sent back to his hometown. In Yangzhou, it is necessary to ask the imperial court for instructions to deal with the four Japanese monks, and the memorial will be transferred to Honglu Temple, which manages the affairs of foreign monks.Honglu Temple went to the temple where the four Japanese monks were originally assigned to investigate.Rongrui and Puzhao came back from Dafuxian Temple in Luoyang, where they originally lived, and said: "The monk has gone west with Yujia since the 25th year of Kaiyuan, but he hasn't come yet." Yexing's name has been deleted from the list for some reason. According to the report of Dafuxian Temple, Honglu Temple reported that soon after, the imperial decree came to Yangzhou, "Rongrui and others are the monks who entered the court to study, and they were given 25 pieces of silk every year, and they were served in four seasons. It is false. Now that you want to return to the country, you can release it, and you should follow the Yangzhou regulations." This punishment obviously had the kindness of Prime Minister Li Linfu.Rong Rui was imprisoned in April, and he was released in autumn and August. Before waiting for the convenience boat, the living expenses are still paid by the government as usual. When there is a convenience boat, the Yangzhou interview envoy will order him to return to the country. Also, a private house was allocated for four people to stay. In an accident, the plan to cross the sea failed.Soon after Rongrui and Puzhao regained their freedom, they went to Daming Temple to meet Jianzhen in private. The two originally wanted to ask Jianzhen to go east again, but Jianzhen's determination did not waver at all.Jianzhen said: "Don't worry, everything happens like this. When going to Japan, just try to find convenience as much as possible, and you will surely get what you want in the end. It's just that it's better not to use the ships and goods that have been prepared." So he set about Prepare for the second time. Jianzhen himself is determined to remain unchanged, but two retreaters unexpectedly appear among the main colleagues. One was Dao Hang, whose enthusiasm for going to Japan had completely disappeared. He said he was not in good health and packed his luggage to go back to Chang'an. The other person is Xuan Lang. He thinks it is too dangerous to cross the sea in a small boat, and he should wait until the next Tang boat is sent.Although he really wanted to go back to China, he didn't want to take risks with his companions, so he went to the embassy to apply to leave Yangzhou and return to Chang'an.Rong Rui criticized him, Monk Jianzhen is ready to cross the sea without taking his own life, why can't we take a boat. But Puzhao dissuaded Rongrui, and one night, he bid farewell to Xuanlang who was left alone in Tang Dynasty. At the banquet, there was another retreater, that is Karma. He murmured that he also wanted to give up.On the same boat as Monk Jianzhen, the people on the boat regarded him as an important person. He is a famous monk with high virtue, so of course he should be especially respected. But this made Karma uneasy. He didn't finish his sentence, Pu Zhao and Rong Rui didn't understand what he meant, they didn't know why he was upset, they only knew that he didn't want to leave with him.The two didn't make a sound, they knew that his determination was irreversible now that his karma had been spoken. After two or three days, Puzhao asked Yexing again.Ye Xing was firm and explained the reason why he didn't want to be on the same boat. He was worried that if the boat got flooded, everyone would take care of the monk and discard those scriptures. in the boat.Hearing this, Puzhao felt that it made sense. In case of danger, of course he would not save the mountain of scriptures and not save the monk. He told Rong Rui what Ye Xing said, Rong Rui thought about it, and said that he also agreed with Ye Xing's idea. "Monk Jianzhen is important, and a large number of scriptures are also important. For the motherland, both are equally important. It is better to follow the advice of the industry and not to be in the same boat." After another three or four days, Puzhao went to the Chanzhi Temple in the outskirts to help Yexing carry back the luggage.Ye Xing is going to stay in Yangzhou and wait for other ships. From a corner of the Zenzhi Temple, one can overlook the canal flowing through the plateau. The canal is crowded with countless boats of different sizes, side by side. On each boat, the boatmen are shouting loudly and busy operating. The temple where Ye Xing stayed this time had better lighting than Puzhao's previous residences in Luoyang and Chang'an.While waiting for the ship, Ye Xing must still immerse himself in writing scriptures, taking care of the poor appearance of Ye Xing lying on the desk. Seeing this bright room, he couldn't help being happy for Ye Xing. Autumn passed by in a hurry. This winter was different from previous years. The climate was exceptionally warm and there was no snow in Yangzhou. The preparations for the sea-going ship are being stepped up. This time, Jianzhen paid 80 guan for the voyage fee. They used the money to buy a military ship belonging to Liu Julin, the interview envoy of Lingnan Road, and hired 18 boatmen. The sea food is done. It was December when Liu Julin purchased the military ship. At this time, the pirate Wu Lingguang entered Kou Yongjia County, and the Jiangsu and Zhejiang coasts frequently raised alarms.Puzhao and the others felt very strange why Liu Juyan would sell the military ship at this time. The man was later charged with malfeasance. In December, the Daming Temple suddenly became lively. Those who accompanied Jianzhen, headed by Xiangyan, Daoxing, Deqing, and Situo, together with Puzhao and Rongrui, had a total of 17 people, which was less than the previous time.In addition, there are jade creators, painters, sculptors, embroiderers, stele workers, etc., together with boatmen, a total of 185 people. This time, the items that Jianzhen prepared to carry include scriptures: one piece of "Huayan Sutra" in gold characters, one piece of "Dapin Jing" in gold characters, one piece of "Great Collection Sutra" in gold characters, and one piece of "Great Nirvana Sutra" in gold characters There are 100 volumes of other miscellaneous scriptures and treatises; there are Buddha statues: a shop of painted five-top statues, a shop of precious elephants, a golden clay statue, a screen of six Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, and a class of Buddha objects: a screen of moon orders One piece of Xingtian screen, 120 mouthpieces of dojo, 14 pieces of beads, 8 mouthpieces of jade rings, 50 mouthpieces of mother-of-pearl scriptures, 20 mouthpieces of copper vases, 24 mouthpieces of Chinese felt, and 1,000 pieces of cassocks. After the preparations were completed, the military ship was fully loaded with people and cargo, and sailed quietly from Yangzhou. It was a moonlit night in late December. Raise the sails and go down along the river to Langgoupu (Taicang, Jiangsu Province). The moonlight is bright red, the wind is getting tighter, and there are big waves. The boat stayed at the seaside overnight, but when it was docked, it was hit by strong waves, broke the bow of the boat, and entered the sea.As a last resort, one hundred and eighty-five people disembarked from the ship. Before long, the tide came ashore again.Rongrui, Puzhao, and Situo moved Jianzhen into the reed, and everyone except Jianzhen was submerged in the water. It was cold and windy all night, and the water was bone-chilling. The next day the wind subsided, the boat was repaired, and it went into the sea again. It sailed to Dabanshan (one of the Ma'an Islands) off the coast of Jiangsu. Been there for a month. When the wind came again, the boat sailed towards Sangshi Mountain (one of the Qushan Islands). The waves were rough, and it was easy to sail to Sangshi Mountain. The shore was scattered with rocks and reefs. The boat was washed far away to the center of the sea by the waves, and then rushed back to the shore after a while. It took a long time, but it ended up sitting on the reef.Half of the people on board finally got out of the boat, and the rest were still on board, drifting with the boat to the shore, and when the boat hit the shore, the hull broke into several pieces. When it was dawn, all the goods on board were swept away by the waves. There was neither food nor drinking water. People were standing on the deserted beach under the cliff, unable to land. One hundred and eighty-five people were suffering from hunger and cold, and spent three days on a narrow barren beach. Three days later, the wind calmed down, and a clear blue sky was seen overhead, and the warm winter sun was bright and bright, shining on this group of distressed refugees. On the evening of the fourth day, they were spotted by fishing boats and got some rice. On the evening of the fifth day, the sea patrol boat came, questioned them, and then drove away.Three days later, the victims saw an official ship come to pick them up. It was forty days after they set off from Yangzhou that they moved onto the official ship from the deserted island of the island. One hundred and eighty-five people sat on the deck of the official ship, as if they had escaped from the gate of hell, silent, staring blankly at the sea. There are islands in front of the boat, there are so many that it is unbelievable, and the sea is very calm.It was the same sea that had drifted their boat like a splinter and finally smashed it to pieces, leaving only the people adrift to the beach and sweeping away everything else, but now it had calmed unexpectedly .A large number of goods on the ship have disappeared without a trace, and all the scriptures, Buddha statues, Buddhist utensils, and medicines have sunk to the bottom of the sea. Puzhao thought, luckily he didn't bring the scriptures of karma, if he went with him this time, then his 30 years of hard work on the mainland would really be submerged in the water. Rong Rui moved behind the official ship and said to Pu Zhao: "Monk Jianzhen didn't give up his wish to cross the sun. Now he seems to take us to the Ashoka Temple in Yunshan and let us live there. He said, let's try to cross the sea when we get there." After hearing this, Puzhao was a little bit surprised. He had just been rescued on the official ship and saved his life, and immediately he was thinking about the next crossing. In the whole ship, there were probably only Jianzhen and Rongrui.Jianzhen was wearing the clothes given to him by the official ship, and sat on the deck near the bow. Behind him, sat Xiangyan, Situo, Daoxing and others who were always with him.Except for Jianzhen, the rest of them are almost half-naked.The cold sea breeze in the second half of the first month made them restless for a moment. The official ship was loaded with a group of half-naked refugees and transported them to the coast of Mingzhou. One hundred and eighty-five people set foot on the land of the mainland again. They set off from Yangzhou, went down the Yangtze River, drifted in vain among several small islands in the Ma'an Islands at the mouth of the Yangtze River, and then were rescued by an official ship, passed through the Zhoushan Islands, and brought them to a corner of Hangzhou Bay. They spent a few days in a seaside village. The prefect of Mingzhou asked the court for instructions on how to arrange them, and had to wait for the order from above, and it took about 20 days before he issued the order. Most of the personnel were sent back to their hometowns, and only seventeen monks were kept in the Ashoka Temple. Mingzhou was a part of Yuezhou a few years ago, and it became an independent state in the 26th year of Kaiyuan. It consists of four counties: Yunshan, Fenghua, Cixi, and Wengshan.Ashoka Temple is an ancient temple located fifty miles east of Yunshan County.Behind the temple is a small hill with a wide temple and dense bamboo forests. In the past, there used to be a majestic pagoda garan. One hundred and eighty years ago, in the fifth year of Jiande, there was a fire. The current hall was rebuilt later. It is small and desolate. It is no longer possible to imagine the magnificence of the past, but there are still many ancient legends about this ancient temple. There is an Ashoka Pagoda in this temple, which is why the Ashoka Temple got its name. There is a well-known legend that a hundred years after the Buddha died, Ashoka used ghosts and gods to build 84,000 pagodas. These pagodas have been buried in the soil. Now there is only one small pagoda in the temple, which is said to be 84,000 pagodas. one of. Both Rongrui and Puzhao had heard about the origin of the tower. In the first year of the Jin Dynasty, there was a Liu Sahe in Xihelishi, Bingzhou. After his death, he went to the Hall of the King of Hades. He was convicted of a crime in this world because he rode a red horse, carried a black dog, and released goshawks to hunt animals. Huiyang converted to Buddhism and found the Ashoka Pagoda.Saha went back to Yangjian to become a monk and went to Yunshan to find Ashoka Pagoda. In the middle of the night, I heard a faint bell ringing underground, dug out from the ground, found a pagoda, and built this temple. The tower is one foot four five inches high and about seven inches square. It is a small tower.Puzhao went to the Relic Hall several times to see the pagoda, one of which was with Si Tuo.Sito was twenty-one years old at the time, the youngest among his peers. He was especially appreciated for his appreciation of truth. He was clear-headed, serious in his work, and recorded everything he saw and heard.Regarding the Ashoka Pagoda, he made this record: "The pagoda is neither gold nor jade, nor stone, nor copper, nor iron. It is made of purple black, and the stories of "Jataka" are engraved on all sides. bell." Si Tuo said that the pagoda was made of purple and black, but Pu Zhao saw it as lavender. The materials used to build the pagoda, as Sito wrote, are neither gold nor jade, nor stone, nor copper, nor iron.Every time he peeks at the bell hanging in the tower, he thinks that the so-called ringing underground in the legend is probably this bell. Pufu and Situo took a walk near the monastery together whenever they had free time. This young monk with good facial features recorded everything he saw and heard in detail, as if it was his own mission. Three miles southeast of the temple, on the top of a small highland, there is the right footprint of the Buddha, and on the rock of the hill three miles northeast, there is the left footprint of the Buddha, each one foot four inches long, five inches eight inches wide in front, and eight inches wide in back. Four inches by five inches, three inches deep, and the ribs on the toes clearly appear, which are said to be the footprints of Kasyapa Buddha. On the side of the road two miles east of the temple, there is a well about three feet deep. There is a clear spring in the well. It is said that the heavy rain will not overflow and will not dry up for a long time. The Bodhisattva guarding the Ashoka Pagoda.Blessed people can see its original form, but unlucky people cannot.Someone once built a roof over a well and decorated it with seven treasures. Suddenly, the well overflowed and washed away the roof. There are many stories about this well. There is also such a legend in the temple. About a hundred years ago, in the 19th year of Zhenguan, there was Master Min who led hundreds of disciples to the temple to place orders. He taught scriptures for one month, and nearby residents came to the temple to listen to the lecture every night. One night, those who listened to the lecture saw a hundred or so Buddhist monks with strange shapes parading around the pagoda. At that time, when the listeners saw the small stupa and the little monks parading around the stupa, they all naturally became masters of the big stupa.Everyone thought it was strange and told the monks in the temple. The monk said: "This is not surprising at all. Every year on the four auspicious days, people from far and near come to the temple for gatherings. In the middle of the night, Buddhist monks can be seen parading around the pagoda, chanting scriptures, praising Buddha, and performing meritorious deeds." Puzhao was particularly impressed by the legend of the Buddhist monk circumambulating the pagoda.A picture of a little Buddhist monk walking around a small pagoda strangely makes people feel more real than any legend in the temple. Jianzhen and other seventeen monks welcomed the spring in Ashoka Temple. When the spring sun shines on the barren garden and sparse bamboos, Longxing Temple in Yuezhou invites Jianzhen to give lectures on precepts.Jianzhen accepted the invitation and went to Yuezhou with Rongrui and Puzhao. On the way home, I toured Hangzhou, Huzhou, and Xuanzhou again, giving precepts everywhere, and returned to Ashoka Temple. It was already the end of summer. Because they walked with Jianzhen, they received an education that they had never received before. This is the first time since entering the Tang Dynasty, he left the life of a solitary student studying abroad and got a mentor. The two listened to Jianzhen's same lecture over and over again, each time discovering a new understanding. In addition to listening to the law, I learned a lot.Longxing Temple in Yuezhou is the monastery where Jianzhen's master Dao'an once lived. They were there and saw Jianzhen's daily pious daily life with their own eyes.At Kaiyuan Temple in Yuezhou, I also personally listened to Tan Yi, an eminent monk who was a fellow student of Jianzhen.Later, at Longxing Temple in Hangzhou, I met Lingyi, the disciple of Fashen, the senior of Jianzhen. Not long after returning to Ashoka Temple, something happened. The monks in Yuezhou knew that Jianzhen was going to Japan and wanted to stop him, so they applied to the state officials to arrest Rong Rui, the mastermind. Rong Rui realized that the situation was not good, so he hid in the home of a man named Wang Cheng, and soon, he was still arrested by the officials.Puzhao hid in another folk's house, but was not arrested. "Probably so."
