循迹追去，在柞树林中发现了那个扔弃着的鸭绒睡袋。一面想看这是什么，一面小心翼翼地打开了睡袋的拉锁。因为里面装着口鼻满是血痕的年轻女人的尸体，他惊骇万分地向附近的派出所报告，不再去驱捉狐狸了。 接到农民报告的派出所警官，与本署联系的同时，为了保护现场，由农民引路跑向那个地点去。不久，柞树林一带布满了警察。 尸体全身有伤，加之有头部挫伤、坐骨复杂性骨折，是典型的交通事故。 根据勘察所见，判断死后已经经过了25至30个小时，也就是说，是从昨天深夜到早晨车撞人亡后，被装进鸭绒睡袋里扔弃在现场的。 进一步加以解剖，结果认定头腔里有血肿。这是被撞后头腔出血慢慢蓄积成血肿，从而压迫脑干致死的。从伤势来判断，被害者遭遇事故后，有相当时间存活的可能性。这期间，肇事者可能抱着濒死的被害者，在犹豫着自首不自首。因为终于死掉，就把尸体装进鸭绒睡袋扔到山中了。这是警察们占优势的意见。 掩盖死者身份的活动，看来像是大体上搞了一次。然而，是肇事者移动征件了，还是没有把被害者剥光衣服的残酷性呢？从死者西装上衣兜里发现的某化妆品公司的顾客卡片上，简单地把身份剖明了。 撞死人逃跑的肇事者，和其他人不同：没有犯罪的计划性、凶恶性以及异常的人格。行为本身虽是反社会的，但也许是因为自己的疏忽大意和某种不幸的因素，突然把人撞死的。 撞死人逃跑的并不多。他们是有生以来头一次伤害人，因而失去了正常的判断力，只是出于动物的自卫本能企图逃掉的可能多一些。事故发生前，他们是极平常的小市民，一旦突然出了事故，也就失去了自己的良知。 撞死人逃跑，被称为最容易发现的犯罪。因为肇事人的车和被害者发生激烈的接触，现场留下了车体的碎片、涂料粉渣和车轮打滑的残痕。车体受了损伤，也要送到修理工场去修理，撞死人逃跑容易残留下证据。 “当然，我们考虑到了那种可能性。但是，黄颔蛇在都内外以及附近各县到处都有，也不成其为线索呀！而且往现场运送鸭绒睡袋的时候，或许也有从裂开的缝隙钻进去的可能。这附近就有黄颔蛇，也可能是不知道黄颔蛇钻进鸭绒睡袋的肇事者，扔掉遗体后就将拉锁拉得紧紧的，使蛇失去逃出口了。” “那条黄颔蛇还存在吗？” “首先做为证物，在本署保存着。” “能让我暂且看看吗？” “不，是生命力很强的家伙哩。发现时感到是死的，但看来还有一丝气息，放在这里也许会活过来。”保存股的警官说。 “腹部附近鼓胀着哩！”有田因为黄颔蛇腹部有一个地方鼓鼓地膨胀着，就加以注意了。 “像吞过什么似的。一定是钻进鸭绒睡袋之前，吞进什么捕获物了。” “刑警先生！”有田突然扬起高声：“不能接受我的请求把这条蛇的腹部切开吗？” “切开蛇的腹部？”检查员用不解的眼光看着他。 “如果蛇在钻进鸭绒睡袋之前吞进捕获物，那也许是在肇事者家附近把什么捕获物逮住了，我这样想。” “不错！”检查员点着头。蛇吞进的捕获物，不也可以成为线索吗，有田这样启示着。 “这一点，我们看漏了。如果蛇是从肇事者家附近爬来的，蛇吞进的捕获物就是一个了不起的线索啦，快些干起来看吧。” 鼠类中性格最凶暴的就是褐鼠，所以褐鼠一家占据着食物最丰富的地域。埃及鼠和鼷鼠被褐鼠赶走，只能在二楼以上顶棚里，或者食物比较少的人家，靠吃褐鼠的残羹剩饭而生存。有田因为离婚的妻子抱怨新居的老鼠多，又难治，曾给做了一次彻底的驱除，那时捕住的都是褐鼠，鼷鼠一只也没有。 她的家，是褐鼠一家统治的势力范围，根本没有实力不敌的鼷鼠生存的余地。 “17号”是在相生街什么地点被黄颔蛇吞下去的，把被捕获的3次结合起来观察，更加限定了活动范围。特别是调查开始后第3次被捕获的场所附近，可能性最大。而且吞掉“17号”的黄颔蛇，也钻进装着村川美知子尸体（那时也许还有微息）的鸭绒睡袋里去了。 ——凶手可能住在“17号”爪迹消失的附近—— “对相生街一带进行一个不漏的搜查！”搜查员分别对“17号”的爪迹进行了描绘；而且发现住在相生街二十号的律师三岛隼人的车——TR6PI的前照灯和前部防撞杆有和什么相撞后可见的歪扭和变形；再对TR6PI加以周密的检查，终于抓住了决定性的证据。 从汽车的散热器护栅间，发现了微量的人体组织片，那和村川美知子的血型是完全一致的。 正因为是律师，当搜查员发现那损伤的车时，三岛下了决心，坦率地供出一切。 根据他的自供，撞人后因为被害者还活着，不忍那样抛掉，就装进鸭绒睡袋放在三岛家里，等她缓过气来。直到确认已死的那天夜里，才抛弃到现场的山林中。但三岛又供述了搜查员没有想到的事情。 “车确是我自己的，可出事当时我并没有握着方向盘。”他这样说。 ——那么，是谁驾驶的呢？搜查员追问。 “我的未婚妻野泽美都子呀！她无沦如何硬要驾驶，所以我终于让出了方向盘。这是错误的起因。”三岛回答了。
