He has never cultivated history without Zifu, and boasted about Song Zijing with half his arms. 先生作史时，搜集先民有关台湾著作甚丰，其中三十余种，均系海内外孤本，极足珍贵，乃编为《雅堂丛刊》。笔墨余闲，颇事吟咏，因集《大陆诗草》以后之作，都为一卷，名曰《宁南诗草》，志故土也。其《登赤嵌城》曰： 七鲲山色郁苍苍，倚剑来寻旧战场。 地剪牛皮成绝险，潮回鹿耳阻重洋。 张坚尚有中原志，王粲宁无故国伤。 落日荒涛望天末，骑鲸何处吊兴亡。 民国十二年春，先生以《通史》已刊，《诗乘》亦纂成，思欲暂息其著作生活，因偕沈太夫人东游，以诗自写其境曰： 五岳归来已七秋，又携仙眷上蓬洲。 此行为爱樱花好，料理诗篇纪俊游。 时震东适留学东京，随侍先生及沈太夫人漫游于镰仓、箱根间，天伦之乐，无过于是。回忆海滨白沙，湖上青松，犹历历在眼前也。 先生尝曰：“余尝见古今诗人，大都侘傺无聊，凄凉身世。一不得志，则悲愤填膺，穷愁抑郁，自戕其身，至于短折。余甚哀之。顾余则不然，祸患之来，静以镇之，横逆之施，柔以报之。而眷怀家国，凭吊河山，虽多回肠荡气之辞，绝无道困言贫之语。故十年中未尝有忧，未尝有病。岂天之独厚于余，盖余之能全于天也。”其善养生也如此。故体虽清癯，而绝少疾病。先生与沈太夫人感情极笃，对震东姊弟尤为慈祥。御下宽，待人恕，数十年未尝见其稍有愠色。性嗜茶而远酒，以茶可养神，酒能乱性也。亲朋至，必亲汲泉瀹茗，畅谈古今，而议论新颖，以是人咸亲之。 民国十五年春，携眷游杭州，住西湖。盖欲了其“他日移家湖上住，青山青史各千年。”（《大陆诗草》）之宿愿也。是年暑假，震东由日来杭省亲，朝夕侍先生优游于六桥三竺间，每至一处先生必为震东说明其历史。未几，北伐军兴，江南扰动，因又返台。是时，日人在台已历禁国文，且不许学生使用台语矣。先生为保存台语计，复贾其余勇，作有系统之分析。举凡台湾方言，无不博引旁证，穷其来源，遂成《台湾语典》四卷。尝谓：“台湾文字传自中国，而语言则多沿漳、泉。顾其中既多古义，又有古者，有正音，有变音，有转音。昧者不察，以为台湾语有音无字，此则浅薄之见耳。夫所谓有音无字者，或为转接语，或为外来语，不过百分之一二耳。以百分之一二，而谓台湾语有音无字，何其傎耶！” 先生性喜游，所至辄有吟咏，尤多吊古伤时之作。晚年好学佛， 其《游台北观音山》诗，读者谓其深得佛家之妙谛。The poem says: 我家在城阴，观音日对门。 我来此山中，观音寂无言。 色相虽可参，妙法不得闻。 譬如掬水月，水去月无痕。 又如触花气，花谢气何存。 我身非我有，万物同其源。 万物非我有，天地分其根。 天地非我有，大造阐其元。 大造非我有，佛法转其轮。 上穷亿万劫，下至亿万孙。 唯佛心无畏，唯佛道独尊。 湛然观自在，一洗众生喧。 民国十八年，震东毕业东京庆应大学经济学部，归佐家务，趋庭之际，并为讲授国文焉。越二载，先生谕震东曰：“欲求台湾之解放，须先建设祖国。余为保存台湾文献，故不得不忍居此地。汝今已毕业，且谙国文，应回祖国效命，余与汝母将继汝而往。”震东奉命，携先生函回国，进谒张溥泉先生于南京。溥泉先生见函，深为感动，因命留国内工作。 二十二年，先生以震东已在国内服务，家姊亦在沪上，舍妹又已毕业高等女学校，因决意携眷返国，居沪上，盖欲遂其终老祖国之志也。时震东居西安，闻讯，来沪省亲。多年违侍，一旦相聚，骨肉之情，倍觉深切，因将回国后至京赴平入陕之经过，详为禀闻，先生与沈太夫人均极喜慰，并谕震东曰：“余自台湾沦陷，吾家被毁，三十余年靡有定处，而对于汝姊弟之教育，尤煞费苦心。今余之著作已次第告成，而汝辈亦皆有所造就，且一家均居国内，余心稍慰矣。余虽年事渐高，而精神尚健，此后当继续著作，以贡献于国家也。” 二十四年春，先生偕沈太夫人来游关中，终南渭水，足迹几遍。是年夏返沪。 二十五年孟春，先生在沪患脏病，经中西名医诊治，而药石罔效，遂于六月二十八日上午八时逝世，享寿五十有九。弥留之际，谕震东曰：“今寇焰迫人。中、日终必一战，光复台湾即其时也。汝其勉之！”震东俯首涕零而对曰：“敢不遵命。”翌日依佛教式典，将遗体谨付荼毗，从遗命也。二十八年三月一日，沈太夫人弃养于西安，享寿六十有六。 先生有子一，即震东也，娶沈阳赵氏。孙一，名战。女三：长夏甸，毕业台北静修高等女学校，适林；次春台，早殇；三秋汉，毕业淡水高等女学校，适黄。 先生毕生尽瘁于保存台湾文献，冀维民族精神于不堕，其精神思想流露于著作间，读者无不叹为三百年来海上之杰作也。 今春震东在重庆，适徐旭生先生自昆明来讲学，告震东曰：“台湾收复在即，国人多欲明台湾历史。先德遗著，急须在国内重版，顷已商之于商务印书馆，君其速携书往访。”震东遵嘱修谒。嗣得来书谓：“台湾为我国最早沦陷区。而《台湾通史》一书，油然故国之思，岂仅结构之佳已哉。敝馆亟欲将其重版，籍广流传，以彰先德。”读之心喜。顾震东自奉命回国，于今十五年矣，虽兢兢业业，未敢自废，而对祖国，对台湾，殊少贡献，愧无以仰承先志。今经旭生先生之介绍，蒙商务印书馆之雅意，于吾父逝世十年后，得在国内，将其遗著重印。震东虽不肖，庶几稍慰吾父在天之灵乎。 一九四五年六月四日连震东谨述于重庆李子坝 ------------------ <下册完>
