Chapter 23 Chapter Eight: Ancient Chinese and Foreign Medical Exchanges

Around the 1st century AD, Korea was divided into Goguryeo, Silla, and Baekje.Medicine at that time had reached a certain level and had spread to Japan. In Chinese medical works, some Korean medicines are also recorded. For example, in the "Bielu of Famous Doctors" collected and sorted out by Tao Hongjing of the Liang Dynasty, it contains the comparison of Baekje and Korean people participating in Shangdang ginseng in our country; In Jing Ji Zhu, such as schisandra, kelp, and catkins are also produced in Korea, which shows that some Korean drugs had been introduced to China before the Northern and Southern Dynasties.Tang Dynasty Wang Tao's "Waitai Miyao" records the Korean prescription for treating "poisonous gas attacking the heart, limbs and veins": Evodia and papaya are boiled and taken. "Daguan Materia Medica" also records the story of the introduction of Clematis to China from Silla. At that time, some medicines in some prescription books also indicated that Silla varieties should be used.Such as Aconite, Corydalis, Ginseng and so on.

Chinese medicine has also been continuously imported into North Korea. During the Southern and Northern Dynasties, Emperor Wu of Liang accepted the request of Baekje and sent doctors to carry out medical activities. Since then, acupuncture and moxibustion have been introduced to North Korea.During the prosperous period of the Tang Dynasty, the economy was prosperous, the politics was stable, and the medical and health undertakings also attracted worldwide attention. At that time, it attracted merchants, monks and overseas students from many countries.During this period, many medical classics were introduced to Silla, such as "Su Wen", "Treatise on Febrile Diseases", "A and B Classics of Acupuncture and Moxibustion", "On the Origin and Symptoms of Various Diseases", "Prescriptions for Thousand Gold", "Secrets of Waitai" Wait.Since Silla became a vassal of the Tang Empire, the medical system also imitated the Tang system. Medical education institutions were set up, and doctors of medicine were set up. "Plain Questions", "Nanjing", "Acupuncture and Moxibustion Classics", etc. were used as teaching materials to cultivate professionalism. doctor.During Song Zhenzong's reign, the imperial court presented Goryeo with "Taiping Shenghuifang" twice. This book was a large-scale prescription compiled by the Song government. Later, this great work became the most important medical prescription book in Goryeo. The court of the Northern Song Dynasty was invited by Koryo many times to send medical officers to Koryo to engage in medical work and teach medicine in different disciplines. They trained a large number of doctors for Koryo and made Chinese medicine widely spread in Koryo. Medicines were often given to each other between the two countries. At that time, many classic works of traditional Chinese medicine introduced in the past were preserved in Korea, but some of them had been lost in China. In view of this, Song Zhezong had some medical book catalogs copied and handed over to the Korean envoys to bring them back. The following year, Goryeo sent envoys to the Song Dynasty to present the Yellow Emperor's Acupuncture Classic, and the Song Dynasty court engraved and printed it and distributed it to the whole world. It can be seen that the medical exchanges between my country and North Korea were very frequent during the Song Dynasty. In the Yuan Dynasty, Yuan Shizu fell ill, and Koryo sent doctors to help diagnose and treat it.In the middle and end of the Ming Dynasty, two important medical works were published in Korea, namely, the 365 volumes of "Yifang Leiju" compiled by Jin Limeng and others (266 volumes are preserved today), and the 23 volumes of "Dongui Baojian" compiled by Xu Jun.These two books are selected from Chinese medical books, compiled by category, and are rich in content. They preserve a lot of precious literature on traditional Chinese medicine before the Ming Dynasty, and some medical books that have been lost can be seen from these two medical books. At the same time, traditional Chinese medicine has played an important role in promoting the development of North Korea's "Oriental Medicine". The unique system of Eastern Medicine is actually developed from ancient Korean medicine by borrowing the basic theories of traditional Chinese medicine. In the forty-fifth year of Wanli in the Ming Dynasty (1617 A.D.), Cui Shunli, an imperial physician who taught at the Joseon Inner Hospital, came to China with the approval of the Korean royal family and asked Mingtai Hospital to answer their medical questions. The Ming court organized personnel to conduct academic discussions with them, and the imperial physician of the Taiyuan Hospital sorted out the discussion content in the form of questions and answers, and compiled it into a book "Medical Questions".This is the first national medical symposium held between North Korea and my country.Later, in the fourth year of Tianqi (1624 A.D.), Cui Shunli came to Mingtai Hospital again for academic discussions, and the Taiyuan Hospital compiled the content into a book "Answer to Korean Medicine".
