Chapter 74 Liyuan

The music institution set up by Emperor Xuanzong of the Tang Dynasty mainly trained singing and dancing actors, mainly playing Faqu. It was named because it was located in the pear garden in the palace. There are three pear gardens. The one located in the palace is selected from the high-level "Zuobu Ji" under the jurisdiction of Taichang Temple. It is mainly for Tang Xuanzong to play his favorite new vocal music. There are two pear gardens outside the palace, one in Chang'an, affiliated to Chang'an Taichang Temple, called "Liyuan Biejiaoyuan", and the other in Luoyang, affiliated to Luoyang Taichang Temple, called "Liyuan Xinyuan", both of which have about 1,000 people .

Tang Xuan personally participated in the teaching work, and the disciples of Liyuan were taught by Tang Xuanzong, and they were regarded as the emperor's students, so they were called "disciples of the emperor's Liyuan". Emperor Xuanzong of the Tang Dynasty also selected hundreds of court ladies to live in Yichun North Courtyard to study music, also known as "Pear Garden Disciples".There is also a "Small Part Voice" in the Liyuan, which is composed of more than 30 children under the age of 15. Although they are young, their level is not low, so they often play for Tang Minghuang alone.

The "Liyuan Biejiaoyuan" affiliated to Chang'an Taichang Temple and the "Liyuan New Academy" affiliated to Luoyang Taichang Temple focused on cultivating reserve talents for the teaching workshop. Yuefu Miscellaneous"). There are more than a thousand people in the Liyuan Biejiaoyuan, who mainly study "Faqu". There are more than 5,000 musicians in Luoyang, and 1,500 of them belong to the Liyuan New Academy. We can imagine the scale of the Liyuan at that time. After the "Anshi Rebellion", most of the music officials of the Jiaofang and the disciples of the Liyuan fled, and the Liyuan actually existed in name only. During the Tang Dynasty, the Liyuan was officially abolished.
