made in frustration near naples 1 The sun is warm, the sky is bright, The sea waves dance swiftly and brightly, At noon the purple, crystalline radiance Sprinkled on snow-covered peaks and blue islands; The breath of the damp earth winds softly, Surrounded by the budding flowers; Like a different note of joy— listen!The breeze, the current, the song of the birds— The noise of the city is as gentle as it comes from outside the world. 2 I see the lonely bedrock of the sea Floating seaweed, green and purple intertwined; I see the waves breaking on the shore, Like a shower of stars, the light splashes and disappears;

I sit alone on the sand to rest; The noon tide flashes with lightning All around me flickering, a melody Floating in the heaving motion of the waves— Oh, how beautiful!I wish I could share this feeling with someone! 3 well!But I have no hope, no health, There is neither inner nor outer peace, Nor is it like a philosopher who can learn from meditation To obtain "satisfaction" far more expensive than wealth, Let yourself live in the glory of your soul; I have no fame, no love, no leisure, no splendor, To see others surrounded by these— They smile and call life joy, But for me, ah, this cup is bitter enough.

4 But now the despair is at peace, Gentle as the wind and the sea, I can lie down like a weary child, Weep this troubled life: Although I have been tortured enough by it, I still have to endure till death, like sleep, Come to me, even if the sun is warm and windy, And I turn my cheeks cold, just to hear The sea splashed monotonously over my dying head. 5 When I'm dead, there may be mourners, As I, the fair day fades away, My cheerful mood immediately becomes Old age, utters this untimely moan; Though they too mourn - for I am would have been disliked—they would never As affectionately as for this glorious day:

For this day, though the sun has gone to the west, It will be stored for a long time, like the joy in memory. Translated by Cha Liangzheng
