Chapter 25 Tang Xuanzong - Li Chen

Li Chen (810-859), formerly known as Yi, was the thirteenth son of Emperor Xianzong.He is dark on the outside but bright on the inside, solemn and reticent, with a peculiar vision, like a fool.After Wu Zong died, the eunuch took advantage of his stupidity and proclaimed him emperor.After ascending the throne, Li Chen was uncharacteristically showing scheming and wisdom.First of all, Li Deyu and his disciples were expelled, and all those who were not reused by Wu Zong Dynasty were promoted. Then Buddhism was greatly promoted, and Wu Zong's measures were denied.During his reign, the forces of Huihe and Tubo had declined, and a relatively peaceful political situation appeared in the late Tang Dynasty.Li Chen died in Chang'an Palace and was buried in Zhenling (now northwest of Jingyang County, Shaanxi Province) because of taking alchemist gold stone.The temple name is Xuanzong.

After sixty years of embellishing jade and beads, who taught Ming Lu to be a poet.
This is a sad poem.This kind of works generally recounts the life of the past, remembers the virtues, praises the achievements, remembers the friendship, and expresses the feelings of mourning.Although this poem does not exceed the above content, it is different.The poem summarizes Bai Juyi's life, but it is written from the perspective of the poet's emotion and poetic character, and the word "poetry fairy" is used as an eye to illuminate the whole article. At that time, there was a poem that said: "There is Liu Bai among the immortals of poetry" (Niu Sengru's "Taihu Stone Cause left by Li Suzhou").Liu refers to Liu Yuxi, and Bai refers to Bai Juyi. They often sang in harmony in their later years.Xuanzong's poem starts with "Poetry Immortal", saying that Bai Juyi has been writing poems for sixty years, one after another, just like embellishing jade beads, he has been called "Poetry Immortal" by the world and is indispensable. What about the road to hell?Here expresses the author's sincere admiration for Bai Juyi and regret for his death. The phrase "Jade and Pearl" not only praises the poet's diligence in composing poems throughout his life, but also praises the beauty of his poems.Bai Juyi passed away at the age of seventy-five, why did he say "sixty years"?Obviously it started when he became famous for his poems when he was fifteen or sixteen years old.It is said that Bai Juyi hadn't named his name in the early days, so he met Gu Kuang, a famous poet, with his sleeves. One dry and prosperous..." That is to say, he rewarded him and said: "If the Tao has a word, it will be easy to live in!" Because of the extension of the reputation, the reputation has been greatly improved (see "Youxian Advocacy").Bai Juyi was about fifteen or sixteen years old at that time.

The couplet "Floating clouds are not tied to the name of Juyi, good fortune and inaction is the word Letian", which means that the name is based on Juyi, and there is no need for floating clouds;This is a compliment to Bai Juyi's talent and character.Embedding Bai Juyi's name and characters into the verses arouses poetic emotion, empathy and reason are born together, and the diction is ingenious, adding luster and interest.The neck couplet "Tongzi Jieyin Song of Everlasting Regret, Hu'er Can Sing Pipa" is an evaluation and praise of Bai Juyi's poetic character, and it has been passed down as a famous sentence.Bai Juyi's poems are plain and clear, and it is said that even old women can understand them. Naturally, boys can interpret them, and Hu'er can sing them.Song of Everlasting Regret and Pipa Pian refer to "Pipa Xing", both of which are representative works of Bai Juyi.Hu'er is opposite to Tongzi, which refers to the children of northern China and Western nations at that time.According to legend, the musical instrument pipa was introduced to the mainland from there.The two sentences in this couplet correspond neatly and catchy, and are mostly praised by later generations.The first sentence of the last couplet, "The article is full of people's ears", is an extension of the previous couplet, and the general comment on Bai Juyi's poems and reputation is well known to passers-by.The concluding sentence "once homesick and sad" expresses the author's nostalgia and sorrow for Bai Juyi's death.

Looking at the whole poem, you can see that the emotion is sincere, the language is fluent, easy and clear, without embellishment or exaggeration, so simple, it seems to have the style of white poetry, isn't it what Tang Xuanzong paid special attention to?When Bai Juyi passed away, it was the time when Xuanzong came to the throne, so remembering Bai Juyi, the implication is also thought-provoking. Thousands of rocks and valleys are tireless, and you can only know the source when you look at it from a distance.
① There are two theories about the origin of this poem: one is that Emperor Xuanzong of the Tang Dynasty traveled to Huangbo and watched the waterfall with Zen Master Huangbo;

This poem is a couplet between Emperor Xuanzong of the Tang Dynasty and Zen master Xiangyanjian watching the waterfall together.The first two sentences were chanted by the Zen master, and the last two sentences were continued by Xuanzong.Since the chants of the two are combined into one piece and integrated into one, it should be appreciated as a complete quatrain. To appreciate this poem, one should start from "looking from a distance" and follow it with "thinking from afar".The first two sentences are "looking from a distance". From a distance, you can feel the emotion of the waterfall flowing through thousands of rocks and ravines. Only when you look at it from a distance can you know the philosophy that the waterfall comes from the top of the ravine, and then realize the extraordinary start of the waterfall.Reading this couplet reminds people of Li Bai's "Looking at the Lushan Waterfall": "The sun shines on the censer to produce purple smoke, and the waterfall hangs in front of the river in the distance. The flying stream goes down three thousand feet, and it is suspected that the Milky Way falls nine days." Li Bai's poem also starts from "Looking from a distance. "And highlighting the height of the waterfall is intended to describe the spectacular scene of the waterfall.However, this poem has a different conception. It uses anthropomorphic techniques to deliberately portray Waterfall's tough character and lofty aspirations.The reason why the waterfall flows day and night in the thousands of rocks and ravines is that it comes from a high mountain top, and the realm rises steeply from the bottom, which is vigilant.

The last two sentences come from the "remote thinking" of this and that. "How can the stream be kept, and the sea will eventually become the waves", from the waterfall in front of the eyes flowing through the stream, the associations gather to form a river, and finally return to the sea, and send out a huge wave!The stream "can't be kept" in the lower couplet is an extension of the "unrelenting labor" in the first couplet; returning to the sea to "make waves" is a supplementary narrative of "high source", which is the finishing touch.From the height of the top of the rocky valley to the boundless width of the sea, from the beginning of the small stream of the rocky gully to the end of the turbulent sea, people feel a kind of irresistible broad ambition and internal force. Bring out the beauty of harmony and variation.

The aesthetic implication of this poem concentrates on personifying the waterfall, depicting a kind of lofty and broad-minded ambition, as well as the kind of tenacious character that does not stop reaching the goal, with a kind of extraordinary inner spiritual power.Writing is like a person, poetry is the voice of the heart.When Emperor Xuanzong first conferred the title of King Guang, he was taboo by Emperor Wuzong, so many of them traveled abroad in obscurity. This poem was written at this time.The Zen master is well versed in Xuanzong's heart, so the first couplet uses thousands of rocks and ravines as a metaphor for his situation, and "work hard" and "provenance" coincide with his aspirations.Xuanzong was deeply touched, and Fang Youxialian's brook could not stay, and he returned to the sea as a wave to express, which reflected Xuanzong's hidden ambition in his heart, and indicated that he would have to do something to ascend to the throne of God.It can be said that it is commendable to be so fit and clear and refined.
