How to practice Buddhism 南怀瑾 7365Words 2018-03-20
content summary. The conclusion of Elder Li. Delusion and love. Sex and love. Ji Dian and Lin Jiuxian. Color Yun. Shouyun. Think Yun. Xingyun. Up until the last time, we were still looking for information and checking the information for this course on Xianmi Yuantong, but we have not checked it completely. Almost every part of the information is very important.Due to lack of time, I can't go into details. Of course, there are three main outlines: view, practice, and fulfillment of vows. I have introduced a little bit of insight, and I have also introduced a part of the function of cultivating realization. I haven’t talked about making vows at all, so I will leave the making of vows for the time being.

If you can do some research on these reference books, you will be able to practice and work hard in this life, and you can say that it is more than enough to become a Buddha.Otherwise, narrow down the scope and only look at the handout materials distributed this time. Although there are sporadic fragments, they are enough. First of all, let us point out that the aspect of understanding is very important. Whether people in the world study Buddhism or Taoism, regardless of Sutra, Esoteric, or even yoga, there are no less than tens of millions of people. However, the purpose is the same, and they all want to transcend reality personally, jump out of this real world, and find a metaphysical belonging and achievement beyond the material world. Therefore, many methods and many theories have been produced.Regardless of these methods, these theories, which one is high, which one is low, which one is right, which one is evil, we must first understand a principle, that is, these methods, these cultivation skills, the most important thing is the view, the view is the achievement of wisdom.

Taking modern culture as an example, people who study science must first clarify academics and theories. Once academics and theories deviate, the following research will be poor. Viewpoint is a Chinese Buddhist concept, especially Zen Buddhism put forward a specific name "with view", which means to have insights.A person's vision must be high, not only learning Buddhism and Taoism, but also the world's dharma. When we do business, we must first have a long-term vision and insight. If the insight is not high, everything is low.It will not be high to start from the practice of attainment, the view is very important.

In traditional Chinese culture of Confucianism, view is called "knowledge". Gentlemen value knowledge. Without knowledge, there is no view. No matter how hard you try, if you don't have insight, your achievements will not be high, especially if you study Buddhism. People in the world are very funny. Everyone wants to learn a method and seek a surreal achievement, but what is the result? For example, if we carefully study our human psychology, we find that people are unwilling to participate in research. In other words, I like to worship a teacher in the east and a teacher in the west; I like to ask for secrets and kung fu, as if I can jump out of it immediately after I get a secret. There is no such thing, absolutely impossible.Especially learning Buddhism is the achievement of learning great prajna and great wisdom, not learning technology. There are hundreds of thousands of kung fu tricks, even if there is a little effect, it can't be surpassed. In fact, many people learn this method and do the opposite. At this time, before we are about to draw conclusions, we bring up the importance of views.

Regarding the perspective, you can refer to the handouts that were issued——Comprehension of the Huayan Sutra. Why did the Avatamsaka Sutra adopt the combined theory of Elder Li?Taking the Huayan Sutra as an example, there are four writings on the view, practice, and vows of its original sect: The Huayan Sutra, the Huayan Shuchao of the Qingliang State Master of the Tang Dynasty, and the fifty-three counselors' speeches of the Huayan Sutra by the later Zen master Foguo, plus the combined theory of the Huayan Sutra, are the four greatest works of the Huayan School. Elder Li, whose legal name is Li Tongxuan, whose real name is unknown, may be the eldest son of a certain emperor in the late Tang Dynasty, so his real name will not be mentioned. In a very wealthy family, he received a very high education, and then determined to practice Taoism. When we got to the deep mountain, a tiger came out. If we would have been scared to death, he was not afraid, and said to the tiger: "Aren't you coming to pick me up?"

If yes, get down and let me ride. The tiger really got down obediently and let him ride on it, and then carried him to a cave deep in the mountain, where he lived and wrote a comprehensive treatise. At night, the goddess brought him food and lit a lamp for him, and he wrote this book day and night. After he finished writing, the mission of the goddess was over, and she stopped coming, and he also went down the mountain. This is the source of the theory of Huayan Jinghe. Since then, the theories of various schools and schools have quoted the words of the same theory. In addition to focusing on the Huayan Sutra, he also introduced the Great Prajna Sutra, the Lotus Sutra, the Vimalakirti Sutra, the Langa Sutra, the Nirvana Sutra, and the Hinayana precepts. a critique. In the past, the term of Chinese Buddhism was called "Disciplinary Judgment", and he made a criticism of the entire system of Buddhism.

This kind of criticism, prior to Elder Li, included the Tiantai Sect Master Zhizhe’s division of teaching, and the Tang Dynasty’s Chengguan Guoshi’s division of teaching. The so-called sub-discipline refers to the scientific arrangement and classification of Buddhism.Judgment is to make objective choices and comments. Many scholars in Japan are now talking about the Buddhist viewpoints, which can be seen by insiders at a glance. They are just modernizing the Tiantai and Huayan sects, and adding a little bit of textual research. These are the so-called scholars today. Buddhism came to China and developed into the late Tang Dynasty. There are great figures like Elder Li. They still respect Buddha very much, but they are very objective in their learning. Criticism is criticism, classification is classification, and they are not polite.

There is a sentence in the combined theory: "Boundless realm, since it is not separated from it; ten generations, ancient and modern, has always been in mind." This is the famous saying of the elder Li.He said that those who preach the Tao are not hindered by space.Brahma is the land, the Western Paradise of Ultimate Bliss is the land of Amitabha Buddha, our saha world is the land of Sakyamuni Buddha, and the Eastern Lapis Lazuli world is the land of Medicine Master Tathagata. The moment sometimes represents the realm of the Buddha, and sometimes represents the country. "Self" refers to ourselves; "he" refers to Medicine Master Tathagata, Amitabha Buddha, and all Buddhas of the ten directions and three times, all of which are "he".Is there another Buddha world?Yes, it's still on your own.No separation from him, no problem. That is to say: According to Buddhism, he proposed a concept that space is relative, but space has no obstacles, no orientation, no size, no coming and going. These principles are views.

Master Zhao once said: "Those who have gone beyond the present, are even more so in the past." It means that there is no hindrance in time and space. However, when we meditate, study Buddhism and practice Taoism, we have not figured out the concepts of time and space. The reason why we have not made progress in meditation is that we are attached to the concept of time and space. Some people are attached to the time of Ziwu Maoyou, while others must face the east when meditating.I heard that some people teach students in the United States, climb up a tree in the morning, and meditate facing the eastern sun. Some people think that it is wrong to meditate without facing the Buddha statue when sitting. The attachment to these concepts must be removed. It should be noted that there is no boundary between self and others.

Time is also relative, there is no absolute, ten generations past and present, always inseparable from the present, there is no past, present, and future. So every Buddhist scripture is written like this, at a time, where is the Buddha... There are two reasons for this. One is the habit of Indians, who don't like numbers and time concepts. When talking about numbers in India, it is 84,000. Therefore, the number of 84,000 in Buddhist scriptures is particularly large, which describes a large number. Looking at Buddhist scriptures from the perspective of Taoism, the most brilliant thing is "one moment". There is only one moment in all ages, and the past and present in the ten generations are always in the present. Hundreds of millions of years ago are now, and hundreds of millions of years in the future will be now. There is only this one , there is no second, this "temporary" is used wonderfully.

So don’t let go of the concept of time and space, don’t talk about cultivating the Tao, and if you don’t understand the concepts of time and space, don’t talk about cultivating the Tao. When we learn Buddhism, we have to completely throw away the concept of time and space accumulated over decades, and return to the state of a baby, but is it possible? It's easy!We look at various theories in Buddhist scriptures such as no-mind, no-thought, and no-discrimination. Take Lao Tzu as an example, in a word, "Concentrating on Qi and softness can make a baby!" We do meditation and kung fu to achieve this. There are many, many problems about the origin of human beings and the phenomenon of human life. How can we solve them? Buddha told us that our existing life is the third projection of our original life. Our original true life is called Zhenru in philosophical terms; First Truth and Ultimate Truth in logical and scientific terms; Tathagata and Buddha in religious terms; World Honored One in terms of educational teachers. In our Chinese, it was later translated as nature. This thing is originally pure and bright. It is neither born nor destroyed. But it really doesn't, doesn't it?No, it can give rise to all that is. The so-called non-existence means that it is originally pure, so it is said to be non-existent.It can cause all things, and it exists. In the fourth volume of the Shurangama Sutra, Venerable Fuluna, a disciple of the Buddha, asked the Buddha: Since the nature of our life is originally pure, why do we have the first thought of ignorance? Why was this world born? In fact, this world was created very badly. Because of the creation of this world, these people fight each other all day long, scold and beat each other, hate me, hate you, etc., making a mess. The main point of the fourth volume of the Shurangama Sutra is to talk about this. There is a sentence in the Buddha's answer that is related to views and vows. He said, "Awareness is the fault."This sentence is very worth noting. We study Buddhism to seek enlightenment and enlightenment. The moment of enlightenment is enlightenment, but that enlightenment is also a big problem. Aren't we seeking emptiness when we meditate?According to this sentence in the Shurangama Sutra, you should pay attention to that if you achieve purity, then purity is a disease. You said: When I meditate, I was very pure at first, but then why was it not pure and empty? It is not empty because it is empty! The reason is very simple, but also so profound. If you study all the classics thoroughly, take a look, how did this original life become the current world? How did it become this life? "Be aware of the blame", only this sentence, the most clear answer. Therefore, all the religions and philosophies in the world have committed the biggest mistake in their views on life. They all have a pessimistic view of life.Seeing that this world is flawed and incomplete, so is Buddhism. There are only two exceptions, one is the Flower Adornment Sutra, which looks at the world and is always true, good, and beautiful, without flaws or sorrows. The second is the Nirvana Sutra, which believes that this world has no defects, no sorrow, and is always happy and pure, and eternal existence. Let's figure out the principles of these scriptures first, and then slowly come to the conclusion, and then talk about the practice of attainment. Today we meditate and cultivate our xinxing, as long as we can achieve the state of being like a baby, we will be successful. Not to mention babies, five or six-year-old children are also cute. They cry when they like, and make trouble when they want to. He is crying, and when you make him laugh, he will laugh immediately and then cry again. He is innocent. We can't do it, we have a lot of hypocrisy, we obviously hate you, but we still have to perfunctory you, laughing but not laughing, how sinful! This has to do with wishes. The Buddhist scriptures say: "The straight mind is the place of Taoism." We can't be straight, how many fakes there are!Every minute and every second is false, even the inner thoughts are false, and they are creating bad karma, so it is not easy to make wishes!I can't do what I want.If you fulfill your wish, you can become a Buddha immediately. Secondly, you can see that babies have no knowledge and no discrimination. That state is the fundamental function of consciousness. For example, our delusional thought of seeking emptiness is also the root of consciousness. So when we meditate and work hard to get rid of delusions, it is all wrong, you know?Desperately trying to suppress thoughts, empty them, and stop them is called eliminating delusions, which is completely wrong. Therefore, after decades of hard work, it was useless, and the root of the real delusional thoughts still remains.Even if we sit there and know that our kung fu is very good and pure, that is just delusional thoughts. That is close to the baby state, but it is still a delusion. In Chinese culture, that thing is called "feeling".Confucius classified it into nature and emotion in the Book of Rites. In the first chapter of the Book of Rites, the beginning is about cultivating the Tao: "Don't be disrespectful, just like thinking." This is Chinese culture, including Dinghui, religion, and life. Be rigorous and respectful at all times, so as not to be drowsy or distracted.this "thinking" It is not thinking of thinking, but it is equal to what Buddhism says: neither scattered nor drowsy, clear and clear, this is the essence of etiquette. Therefore, "there are sages in the east and sages in the west, with the same heart and the same reason." But these are all passed down from the same source in ancient times. "Sex" is the nature of human beings, regardless of the difference between nature and nature, good and evil. For example, some people are naturally talkative, while others don't say a word. How did this nature come about?Chinese culture tells us that it is brought about by "the dawn of nature".The second one is "feeling", here is a question: Why does the doctrine of the mean only mention four things?Originally it was about the seven emotions and six desires, why only mention the four emotions? And it also said: "The joy, anger, sorrow, and joy are not released, which is called the middle, and when they are all in the middle, it is called the harmony." He also said: "The most harmonious, the heaven is in the position, and all things are nurtured." Why only four things?Joy, anger, sorrow, and joy are not sex. Emotion is also brought about by the seeds of alaya consciousness. Some people are happy by nature, some are angry by nature, and some are sad or happy by nature. Love is based on what?It is related to psychology, the four major elements, and the five elements—physiological endowments such as the heart, liver, spleen, lung, and kidney. You didn’t figure it out when you meditated, thinking that it’s just emptying out the sixth consciousness. That’s irrelevant, and it’s not considered a delusion, it’s just a floating thought on top of a delusion. It's easy to go, and it's easy to empty it with thoughts.Do you think I am still sitting here, with my eyes closed, and what is inside is pure and clean, which is exactly what the Shurangama Sutra says: "Keeping a quiet life inside is just like being separated from the shadows of dharma dust." Everyone meditates and works hard. Keep quiet?Otherwise, what Chan Master Dahui (Shangri Xiamu) of the Song Dynasty said, the fault of the later Caodong sect practicing Zen: Silently illuminating evil Zen.Which one who studies Buddhism and Taoism and does Kung Fu is not doing it here?We haven't got rid of these emotions, and we are still full of joy, anger, sorrow and joy.The intercession of the Buddha is a kind of karma, the root of karma.Later Neo-Confucians talked about temperament. If your temperament does not change, how can you become enlightened? So you must first understand these things clearly. Everyone should check them out first. What are you doing there with your legs crossed? Most of them are just self-playing of psychological conditions and have nothing to do with Taoism. How many people have been playing with it for decades. So we have to introspect ourselves, thinking that we are being good people, doing good deeds, and cultivating virtue, but in fact we are just playing with ourselves in our temperament. So what should we do?The first step is to recognize what delusions are. The sentence in the fourth volume of the Shurangama Sutra: "Awareness is to blame" is delusional thinking.A false thought includes the five aggregates, eight consciousnesses, and eighty-eight knots. Therefore, everyone must not think that when you cross your legs, you accidentally eliminate and purify your thoughts, as if there are no superficial thoughts, and think that this is called no delusional thoughts;Your superficial thoughts are eliminated, and you feel that you are sitting there, as if very pure, and that is the root of your big delusions. So don't talk about anything if this isn't empty. If this thought is emptied, and the body and mind are broken, then you can prove the truth, the so-called clear mind and see the nature, you can reach it immediately, and the sudden enlightenment is the enlightenment. Pay attention to this point. Let's look at the practice again. In the book of Zen Zhizhi, the Zen master Gao Fengmiao in the Song and Yuan Dynasties is a true example of Zen practice for later generations. But we can say frankly that Zen Master Gao Fengmiao has trained himself to untie his mind and reach a state of consciousness beyond reality. But there is a fact, his health is still very bad.You must know that material dharma is also a part of mental dharma, and it should be turned around. Why can't it be turned around? This is a big question. If it is said that form and dharma cannot be reversed, has the basic law of Buddhism that "should observe the nature of the dharma realm and everything is created by the mind" as stated in the Huayan Sutra be overturned?Assuming this theory is correct, then birth, old age, sickness and death should be eliminated, and the five aggregates and four elements should be transformed.Special attention should be paid to the fact that theories and facts should not contradict each other. We modern people need to be clear about the concept of practice. In fact, the Buddhist scriptures have already explained it very clearly. In the practice of Zen, there are many people following the path of Zen Master Gao Fengmiao, except for a few eminent monks, such as Monk Ji Dian. Several Zen masters in the Song Dynasty, after enlightenment, were like Ji Dian, pretending to be crazy. For example, Lin Jiuxian, who specialized in drinking after enlightenment, sang his songs indiscriminately while drunk, like Tong Jidian, he spoke clearly and clearly. After the Song Dynasty, why did such people become like this after enlightenment? There is a reason for this. From the four hundred years of the Tang Dynasty, to the five or six hundred years since the Song Dynasty, the entire Chinese cultural circle, everyone has a serious face, whether it is Confucianism, Confucianism, Taoism, or Buddhism, all The cells are all rigid, especially the laughing cells, which are the most rigid.According to Baogong's biography, Baogong has never laughed, he is an upright official, serious!Relatives and friends are not in touch, what is the taste of such a life! But there are many faces like Bao Qingtian, especially in religious circles. These eminent monks who have realized the Tao pretend to be crazy and pretend to be crazy, deliberately messing you up.If one cultivates the Tao with a dead face, what kind of Tao is there? That kind of sanctimonious, is a face of cancer. The Tao is not like this, the secrets of heaven are lively and vigorous. After you understand this, you stick to the realm of emptiness, and finally become sanctimonious, just like the Zen of dead wood in Zen.Dead trees cannot bloom, and they must never bloom to see the Buddha at the Lingshan Meeting. You see, how relaxed Buddha Shakyamuni was, he didn't have a dignified face.First understand this concept clearly, and then study the theory of the five aggregates in Buddhist scriptures. Secondly, we said that the five aggregates are delusional thoughts. Now let's look at the five aggregates and views.Seeing the ground is kung fu; the five aggregates are form, feeling, thought, and consciousness. Form includes the four elements—earth, water, wind and fire, not only the whole body, but also the physical world. For example, if we rub our eyes, we can see a bright light in front of our eyes, like lightning. This is caused by the friction of the eye nerves, and it is a reflected phenomenon. The Buddhist scriptures call it the empty flower of the eyes.If you think this electric light is Tao, what is it if it is not nerves! It's just a change in the nerves, how can you not understand, so stupid! The ear hears the sound, and the nose smells the fragrance, the same is true. These all belong to the aggregate of form. The Heart Sutra says: "Form is emptiness, and emptiness is form." Why don't you have emptiness? When I meditate, my legs are still very numb, so there is still no time for materiality! Why is it numb? There is moisture inside the body, and the Qi channels are blocked. Why is my hair swollen? If there is a disease inside, there will be a reaction. If there is a reaction, how can it be empty! "Form is emptiness, and emptiness is form", you say: I don't care about it in my heart, so why bother to practice Taoism?I also don’t feel it when I’m sleeping. Isn’t that “form is emptiness, and emptiness is form”?This is not to be deceived. Tantra's theory of energy channels, Taoism's theory of eight extraordinary meridians, etc., are all based on the practice of meditation and practical experience. The ancients just recorded these experiences, and after learning these, people of later generations use chicken feathers as arrows, what big Zhoutian and small Zhoutian! It would be completely wrong to regard teaching these Fa as preaching. In fact, no matter what Qimai or celestial circle, after half a day of cultivation, it is all part of the practice. The purpose of processing is to achieve the emptiness of form and dharma first. Only when the energy channel is opened can the body be empty. This is the stage of "form is emptiness", but "emptiness is form" has not yet been achieved. Only by opening up the physiological part first can "form is emptiness".Then turn it around to achieve "emptiness is form", this is the wonderful effect of vacuum, and supernatural powers and wisdom come.It is equivalent to saying that "form is emptiness" is to break up a mountain or a building, destroy it, and turn it into flat ground. "Emptiness is form" is to re-establish a solid building on this flat ground. This is the wonderful existence of the vacuum of Buddhism. Only when it is done can we know what delusions are. This is the first point. The second point, "form is emptiness, emptiness is form, form is not different from emptiness, emptiness is not different from form", these four sentences include several stages of Mahayana and Hinayana Kung Fu.That's not counting, and then he said, "The same is true for thinking and knowing", and the eight words were simply brought over. "Form is emptiness", everyone has not done it, "form is not different from emptiness, emptiness is not different from form", it is even more difficult. In the realm of Mahayana, seeing, practicing, and fulfilling vows all have to be achieved. Form and dharma are not different from emptiness, form and emptiness are no different, and there are no two methods. "Form is not different from emptiness", and form is emptiness.Let's think about it in words, what is the difference between "form is not different from emptiness" and "form is emptiness"?There is a big difference in logic, which is the difficulty of Chinese characters. "Emptyness does not differ from color", those who have truly realized emptiness must of course have achieved it.As Elder Li said, "Boundless realms are not separated from others." The three enlightenments mentioned in the Buddhist scriptures, the supernatural powers of all Buddhas must also be able to do it, and it is not difficult.Emptiness and form are originally one, and their function is also one.It is equivalent to saying that the power outlets in our houses can be plugged into lamps, tape recorders, and fans.Because they are all electricity, they are originally one. I haven't finished talking about color yet, so I'll put it aside for the time being. Now the second one talks about "feeling", which is feeling. This feeling is mostly a physiological reflection, such as cold, heat, exhalation, inhalation, fullness, hunger, etc. In addition to physiological reactions, there are also emotional feelings. Feeling belongs to the emotion of Chinese cultural disposition, while lust belongs to the nature of disposition. Why is materiality opposed to sex? This is a big problem, not that simple. Well, we learn Tantra, Pure Land, no matter what we learn, everyone meditates, and we play with our feelings for a long time. The questions everyone asks the teacher are pains here and there. One hundred people have fifty pairs. They all ask these boring questions. Even teachers don’t want to live. Together, not crazy and half dead.In fact, our Buddhist scriptures haven't figured it out, and we are all playing with our feelings. You recite the Heart Sutra one more time - "feeling is emptiness, emptiness is feeling".You feel numb in your legs, the feeling is coming, why can't you be free?Since you can't afford it, why are you empty? If you have the ability, you empty out the "shou". So pay attention, you turn this, turn that, to be honest, your delusional thoughts of the sixth consciousness are already stuck there and turning in circles. If you want to turn river carts, turn qi channels, three chakras and seven chakras by yourself, the better you turn, the more serious the samsara will be. Don't talk about reincarnation, you sit there meditating, your thoughts and emotions are all stuck there, you don't do anything, look at how busy people are outside, but you meditate all day long, sneaking around, playing with your spirit. Cars, therefore, are useless for ascetics. "Receiving is emptiness", why not seek liberation in this place? We learn Buddhism to seek liberation, but in the end we cannot be liberated, and we are all engaged in the realm of feeling. The third is the aggregate of "thinking".This thought is easier to handle. Everyone said: I can meditate and everything is fine, but I keep thinking about it. "Thinking is emptiness, emptiness is thinking", since thinking is empty, why bother to empty it!It was originally empty, and we did not empty it.In other words, it came to empty us.What is this "it"?The original heart is the same as him.It is for you to empty your mind, our delusional thoughts cannot exist at all!Every thought, every thought has passed in this way, so, "thinking is emptiness, emptiness is thinking", but we can't do "thinking is emptiness", if we do it, we will have concentration and fruition. As for "thinking is not different from space, space is not different from imagination", that is really a real kung fu, and being able to do this is what Elder Li said, "self and others are not two". The fourth one is "Xing" yin, which is more serious. This movement is the movement of life, and it is the inherent movement function of life.Only when you know how to practice yin can you understand what is a clear mind and what is a delusional thought. Of course, seeing one's nature is not enough. So we meditated well and didn’t have delusions, so why did it come again? - It's from the Yin line.It doesn’t listen to you, if the yin cannot be empty, if you want to empty your thoughts, don’t think about it! After the yin of the formation is empty, the forms, feelings, and thoughts above can be emptied.Notice! It is very important to go to ginseng and line Yin by yourself. As for how the yin is empty, let's listen to the next chapter.
