How to practice Buddhism 南怀瑾 6651Words 2018-03-20
content summary. Ten thoughts of Dharma. Anpan, meditation and qi refining. Anbanpin No. 17. Righteousness, righteousness, and righteousness. Breathing in and out. Qi and legs. Luo Yun reads Anpan. An important part of what we are talking about today is the Zengyi Agama Sutra of the Hinayana classics. There are many reasons for adopting this classic. The important point is: before the Sui and Tang Dynasties, there were many people who became monks and practiced at home, especially the monkhood, which can be seen in the biographies of divine monks and nuns.At that time, Zen and Esoteric Buddhism had not yet spread to China.According to the original statement of the Buddha, the Four Agama Sutras in the Hinayana classics are the Southern Buddhism that Buddhism talks about today.

Zengyi Agama Sutra is a part of the Four Agama Sutras, which were introduced to China during the Eastern Han Dynasty of the Three Kingdoms period, which was the most lively time for Sino-Indian academic culture. At that time, Buddhism was sprouting brilliantly in China, and it merged with the I Ching, Laozi, and Zhuangzi, the three metaphysics of China.Politically, the Southern and Northern Dynasties were the most chaotic period, but in academic history, it was the most special transition period, which lasted for two to three hundred years. At that time, there were many people who became monks, studied Buddhism, and achieved fruition. No one paid special attention to things like the eight meridians, but there were many people with supernatural powers. For example, Fotucheng, as we all know, when reading scriptures at night, takes out the cotton stuffed in a hole in his chest, and the light will naturally be emitted from himself.Sometimes I feel that my stomach is too dirty after eating, so I go to the river, pull out my stomach and wash it, clean it and put it back. When monk Beidu wanted to cross the river, he threw willow branches into the river and walked across. But the practice at that time almost all followed the line of the Agama Sutra, and followed the path of "mindfulness", which is right mindfulness in terms of the Noble Eightfold Path.

There are ten ways to recite the Agama Sutra. What is reading? It is a kind of training method for the mind, train your own mind, and use the method of "reading". The ten thoughts are "recite the Buddha, recite the Dharma, recite the monk, recite the precepts, recite the charity, recite the sky, recite the rest, and recite the Anapana" - also known as "recite the Anapana", that is, recite the breath and breath, which is the current Tantra, Taoist Qi Refining Method.Chinese Taoists talk about Qi channels, all of which are influenced by Anapana.Next is "mindfulness of the body", and the last one is "mindfulness of death".

These ten thoughts include all the methods of practice.Mahayana Buddhism is based on the Hinayana, and the Hinayana cannot do it, so let's not talk about the Mahayana. "It has been heard that for a while the Buddha was in the country of Sravasti and only gave it to the lonely country. At that time, the World Honored One told all the monks: You should practice one Dharma, and you should spread it widely. Once you have practiced one Dharma, you will have a reputation, and you will achieve great results. To, "As long as one method is done well, it is right to practice, and all good things will be successful. "Obtaining the taste of nectar" is the taste of obtaining the supreme Dharma.

"Where there is nothing to do, supernatural powers will become." After the mind has nowhere to live, after a long time of homework, the vacuum will naturally produce wonderful existence, and supernatural powers will come. I won't lie to you! "Get rid of all kinds of delusional thoughts, catch the recluse fruit, and lead to Nirvana." All delusional thoughts are gone, and the Arhat's fruit status has been achieved. From then on all the way down, you will naturally reach the fruit position of Nirvana. "What is one method? The so-called Buddha-recitation." This method is the method of teaching Buddha-recitation.

These few sentences are formulaic words, and almost every one of the ten methods has these few sentences. It is wrong for us to look down on Hinayana scriptures while studying Buddhism, and do not study them.People nowadays say: "Oh! I'm following the Mahayana way, and I don't talk about supernatural powers." Stop bragging!Everyone loves magical powers, and fake magical powers.People who absolutely ignore supernatural powers can almost achieve sudden enlightenment. That is a person who sees the Bodhisattva.Who else doesn't like supernatural powers? If you say you don't like it, it's not the same thing in your heart. We must strictly reflect on ourselves, since we are good at supernatural powers, how should we seek them?If you want to get fruit status, the Buddha told you that as long as you go deep into one door and practice hard, you can get fruit status.

The first method is "recite the Buddha".It is not the chanting of Buddha in later generations! The method of reciting Buddha in later generations came from the Three Pure Land Sutras, such as the Infinite Life Sutra, the Amitabha Sutra, and the Infinite Life Sutra created by Master Huiyuan. And the "recitation of Buddha" in the ten recitations is not recitation of Amitabha Buddha!Leave it to you to research. The second method is "recitation".The basis of Hinayana tells us that life is "impermanent, suffering, empty, and selfless". This is the Fa, you must first understand it clearly. The Hinayana scriptures tell us: "All things are impermanent, and they are the law of birth and death. After birth and death, peace and death are the happiest." This is the law.The eight sufferings in life, the twelve causes and conditions, and the thirty-seven virtues are all dharmas.

What is recitation? It means that you concentrate on using these principles to experience life and all kinds of physical and mental changes. But even though we study Buddhism and meditate, we don’t combine the principles of Buddhism with meditation. Am I right? When we read scriptures, oh!I am very comprehensible, and when I meditate, I still sit there humming, breathing here, and not moving there.Buddhism does not tell you to engage in energy channels, but Buddhism tells you to be poor and to think rightly. It’s not that you can’t think! It is absolutely possible to think, the principle of Buddhism is right thinking, right thinking can get meditation.

The third is "recite the monk".Don't think it is a monk who reads, how can it be regarded as a monk who reads it?To recite the Sangha is to sincerely take refuge in the sages and sages. All the sages and sages are monks, the fruitful masters who have proved the Tao. The fourth is "Nian Shi".What is reciting generosity?Zen says: "Let go!" It means inner generosity, letting go of everything, giving away all distracting thoughts and delusions in the heart, so that you can also get home and get supernatural powers! This is what the Buddha told you, and it is the great principle of practicing the Dharma. To expand and supplement it, reflect on one's own faults with one's mind and mind, and get rid of all bad mental behaviors.

The fifth is "Niantian".What is there to read?Buddha Shakyamuni recognized the existence of God, and even introduced the twenty-eight heavens such as the desire realm, the form realm, and the formless realm.Don't underestimate the way of heaven. If you don't have enough kung fu and good deeds, it will not be easy to ascend to heaven!Buddha also admitted that there are immortals who can live to tens of thousands of years. How did you make it?The Shurangama Sutra also told you.The Buddha did not say that they were wrong, but that they had not yet attained enlightenment.Because they have not realized the original body, if they have attained the enlightenment of Bodhi, they will not be called heretics. If a person does not have good deeds, no matter how much effort you have, you will not be able to enter heaven. The Buddha explained the way of heaven in great detail, such as how many heavens there are in the world of desire—of course it is not on the earth, but on another planet. It is really not easy for a person to want to be reborn in the heaven after death! As for how people ascend to the realm of form and heaven, in addition to accumulating good deeds, they also need to rely on meditation skills. If you can't do the four meditations and eight samadhis, you won't be able to ascend to the way of heaven. We have practiced for half a day, but we have not yet reached the first jhana, and it will not be easy to obtain another human body in the next life.

The Shurangama Sutra has already told you how to cultivate concentration and ascend to the Six Desire Heavens. The sixth is "Recite and rest".This is not just sleeping, but Wanyuan letting go.In fact, to really rest is to meditate.Really have to rest, can prove fruit, why?The Shurangama Sutra also tells you eight words: the madness will stop itself, and the rest will be Bodhi."Xie" in Chinese means rest.Great rest can prove Bodhi. When we sleep, it is a false rest. When we are both physically and mentally empty, we let go of all predestined relationships, which is the real rest. The body also rests, the heart also rests, and the emptiness also rests, and the state of emptiness is rested, and that is called a great rest. The so-called mindfulness rest means that you can walk, stand, sit, lie down anytime, anywhere, and let go of mindfulness. The seventh is "Recite Precepts".This section will be discussed in another topic. The eighth is "Mind Anpan".Anban is also called Anban Shouyi.Pay attention to this!Very important.Mindfulness of Anpan means mindfulness of exhalation, inhalation, and practice of breath.Later, the Tiantai sect focused on the method of in-and-out breathing, which is derived from the method of keeping the mind.Anpan Shouyi was not created by Sakyamuni Buddha. It has long existed in Brahmanism and Yoga in India, but the Buddha used Buddhist methods to integrate it with Prajna. After it was introduced to China, it became one with Taoism, and it has something to do with keeping the orifice and refining Qi.There are so many eminent monks in China who have supernatural powers and attainment status, and they are all related to this Anapana.Cultivating qi is very important. You are born in this era, the material civilization is so developed, and the future era will be even busier. It is best to adopt this method. If you don’t follow this path, it will be very difficult to achieve fruition in practice. It is really difficult. what! Let's insert a passage first, add the seventh volume of the Ahan scriptures, and the seventeenth chapter of Anpanpin. A quiet room." Buddha is also a physical body and needs to rest. "At that time, the venerable Luo Yun thought again: Why do you practice Anapana today, get rid of worry and worry, and have no thoughts? At that time, Luo Yun got up from his seat and went to the place of the World Honored One. "In personal relationship, they are father and son; in ritual, they are also one of the disciples. "I've arrived, I'm very courteous, so sit on the side." Why sit on the side?Because the Buddha was resting in meditation, so after saluting, he sat beside him and waited. "In a moment," after a while, the Buddha came out of samadhi and sat down. Luo Yun withdrew from his seat, and hurriedly asked his father, "Why do you practice Anpan, get rid of worries and thoughts, get great rewards, and get the taste of nectar." The World Honored One replied: "Excellent! Excellent! Luo Yun, you are able to come before the Tathagata, and the teacher roars to ask such righteousness." Now you are asking me such a big practice question. "You now Luoyun, listen carefully! Listen carefully! If you think about it well, I will explain it for you." Here are four words to pay attention to: "Think about it well," which means that after you understand it, you still need to study it , don't just be blindly superstitious.I will teach you the method, and you have to study it carefully. The World Honored One said: "As Luo Yun said, if there is a bhikkhu who is happy in a quiet place with no one there, he should straighten his body and mind. Sit in lotus." Pay attention! You can't sit still in meditation, and your legs don't live up to your strength. That's not a "two-legged statue".If the air in your legs is ventilated, your life expectancy can be increased by several decades. The Buddha told us that the most important thing in practice is to straighten the body. You can straighten your body while standing, and you can straighten your body when you are sleeping. The auspicious lying down and laying corpses are all kinds of body straightening. What is the reason why we have no effect in meditation and kung fu?Because there is no "righteous intention"; because cause and effect are reversed, and the conclusions of the Buddha's achievements are taken as one's own practice method. As soon as I sit down, I want to be empty. What is empty? You think this stroke is good and empty, but in fact, it is just the "meaning"!It is the realm of the sixth consciousness. Even if you forget your body now and feel that the inside and outside are bright, you still haven’t gone beyond the scope of the sixth consciousness. In the Shurangama Sutra, the area of five shades, Ningzhong, only belongs to the range of form shades, and it is "resolutely delusion as its foundation". Some people sit quietly in a bright light, and they can know the future, thinking it is "inspiration".If you have studied Consciousness-only, you will know that it is the opposite of the sixth consciousness, and it is the function of the so-called solitary shadow consciousness. There are so many realms! Because you study Buddhism, you will see Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. This is the realm of consciousness.Take the theory of Hinayana practice as an example, your consciousness is not single-minded, and you don’t have "righteousness".The so-called righteousness, righteousness, and righteousness are all indispensable. In other words, you are committing crimes everywhere, and ordinary people talk about precepts casually, which is easier said than done!Your thoughts and consciousness are not upright at all, and you are creating the karma of hell seeds at any time. It is very powerful to become seeds now!Pay special attention. Therefore, the Buddha said that the first thing to do in practice is to straighten your body, mind, and mind. Chinese Taoist alchemy scriptures for cultivating immortals became more numerous after the Sui and Tang Dynasties, and many of the issues about Qi channels were born out of this Anban product. After the Eastern Jin Dynasty, there was the Huang Ting Jing, which emphasized the three grades of medicine, spirit, qi, and essence. These are all things and belong to promising kung fu.If you have not mastered the kung fu of action, how can you achieve inaction? If you can't be single-minded, how can you get rid of your thoughts? That's just self-deception.Therefore, among the 10,000 Buddhists of later generations, none of them will attain fruition, so please pay special attention! In addition to following the Buddhist scriptures, I use my decades of experience to sincerely tell you that if you truly achieve righteousness and righteousness, there is no body that cannot be transformed; no disease that cannot be removed; no body and mind that cannot be healthy. When the body and mind are upright, the body and mind will be absolutely healthy, and you will be able to rejuvenate yourself.Because everything is created by the mind, this is true, which is the four words "right body" and "right mind". "Righteousness" involves breathing, and Taoism is the same. There is a sentence in the Yinfu Jing-"The control of birds lies in the breath". This is an important formula, that is, the method. If you can't grasp your thoughts, you will run around, and you can't concentrate on your thoughts. It's because your breath is scattered, and when your breath is scattered, your mind will be scattered. But qi is not the main body, it is an appendage of the heart, but this appendage is very powerful. If you cannot grasp it, your heart will not stop. It is like riding a horse, and your qi is the horse. In Journey to the West, the horse Tang Seng rides represents that energy. If a person is riding on a bad horse and wants to stop it, but the rein is pulled very tightly, the horse still runs wild and cannot stop, there is nothing you can do.Therefore, although our minds want to concentrate, if our breath cannot be concentrated, how can we stop our delusions? There are many people who are not in good mood or in good health. In fact, it is all because of bad qi. "No other thoughts," at this time, don't have any thoughts in your mind, which is the principle of righteousness.Focus on the tip of the nose and hang the consciousness on the tip of the nose. This sentence killed many people who practiced Taoism and studied Buddhism. What "keep the hole"! "The eyes see the nose, the nose reveals the heart"!Beware of high blood pressure. What else is there to learn from the white crane? The white crane can live for more than a thousand years. It is said that when the white crane is resting, its nose is facing the anus, and the two breaths are connected. But our necks are so much shorter than white cranes, how can we learn from them? That's why the Buddha said: "The ignorance of all living beings is the most pitiful one." The meaning of the nose is not to tell you to look at the nose. This first reminds you to pay attention to the breath in and out of the nostrils, that is, "heart and breath depend on each other." The first step is to integrate the mind with the breath. "The breath is long and the breath is long." Your righteous intention should not be separated from the breath. You must be able to know how long the breath is.Long inhalation is also known to be long. Pay attention to the word "knowledge". If you are cultivating qi while thinking about it, it is wrong and has no effect.Thinking and breathing are combined into one, which is called Anpan Shouyi. How to catch delusions?Just pay attention to the breath, the breath is like a rope. After this horse is tied up, it is equivalent to being tied up in delusional thoughts, so that one can concentrate on one's practice and attain the "First Dhyana".The effect of practice will definitely come. "When the breath is short, you know the breath is short. When the breath is short, you know the breath is short. When the breath is cold, you know the breath is cold. When the breath is cold, you know the breath is cold." Sometimes the breath is cold when it comes in. At this time, there are two possibilities. One is Sickness, one is absolutely healthy, it is one's own heat energy, that is, the "warm" phase in the "Four Jiaxing".On the contrary, you will feel that the air drawn in from the outside is cool, but you feel that the air has nothing to do with you. "When you breathe out, you know that your breath is warm, and when you breathe in, you know that your breath is warm." When you meditate, sometimes the soles of your feet feel warm, that is "breath warming".However, your heart and breath cannot be single-minded, so move here and there, let yourself run around, and you will get warm wherever you run. When I ran to the dantian, I thought it was a kundalini. I advise you to dial -19 and call the fire department! (audience laughs). The Buddha told his young master: "Consider the inhalation and exhalation of the body, and you all know it." This breath is the wind energy mentioned in the Shurangama Sutra. Wind.” But this step involves the practice of Mahayana, so let’s not talk about it for now.Don't just climb high with all your heart, you must first be able to keep your breath. Being able to "know all the in-breath and out-breath" while sitting in meditation has the effect of having a very good memory and a particularly sensitive brain. You generally learn to meditate, you sit there, you are breathing when you are breathing, you don’t know it; you don’t know it when you are drowsy; Without "righteousness", what kind of kung fu is this?It is useless for you to sit for ten thousand years. A lot of people have asked me recently, about not falling down, is it true that not falling down is the way?Which classic, which commandment will keep you from falling down?Unless you are really practicing Toutuo practice.Even the Buddha himself has to sleep. The scriptures and precepts only teach you to visualize the sun in your heart when you sleep, to sleep clearly, and to sleep less. There are some particular points. If you become a monk and sleep, you will have it if you remove the five hindrances. It doesn't tell you not to lie down. When I say these words, I’m not saying that it’s not right to not fall down; it’s just that if you think you have the physical ability, you can do it without falling down.If you don’t have this physical ability, you will end up cultivating the Tao. If you don’t get the Tao, your physical strength will be ruined first. This is not worth it!What I said was very serious, and I told you very sincerely. The Buddha is "the one who speaks the truth, the one who speaks the truth, and the one who does not lie."We want to be truth talkers, speak honestly, and the straight mind is the dojo, so we must pay attention to this issue. "Everyone knows it" is very important, even if you lie down and sleep, you can also pay attention to your breathing, which is the same reason. "Sometimes there is interest, and there is also awareness." Attention! Here it goes a step further.Later, Tiantai School expanded this method, called "breath adjustment", "listening to breath", "counting breath", and even later in Tantric Buddhism, it was called Qigong, Nine-Jie Buddha Wind, Treasure Bottle Qi and so on.There is a saying in Taoism: "The mysterious pearl of heaven and earth is the root of all qi." With the cooperation of body and mind, qi has thousands of changes. It is indeed reasonable for the Chinese to look at a person's face first by looking at his complexion. The breathing is so quiet that it stops, and you will never find any delusional thoughts. If you want to have a delusional thought, you will not be able to get up, but do you know it at this time?Very clear, this is practical kung fu.At this time, "sometimes there is no breath, and then there is no knowledge".As for the "knowledge" of knowing, what is it?That's another question. The so-called spirit and clarity always exist. "If the breath comes from the heart, then the knowledge comes from the heart." This sentence is about to be studied. Coming from the heart does not come from the heart, but it means: the mind is moved. When the mind is moving, sometimes I feel that light is radiating out. If someone else passes by at that time, this person will be infected immediately, and his state of mind will become peaceful, or he will feel a heat flow to him.But this is a process, not a good thing, it can be done.At this time, there is no concentration, it is still early, and it is just ordinary meditation. Now science knows that the human body can emit light, and everyone would emit light. At that time, after your breathing stops, the light will radiate even more.If there are ghosts and gods, at that time, the ghosts would not dare to touch you, and they would hide from you when they saw you from a long distance, because the yang energy is extremely strong. So "breathing from the heart" does not mean that the breath comes from the heart, but that your mind is moving. In other words, most people practice qigong from the heart—the mind intentionally manipulates it, and it is the same when practicing Tantric Buddhism. It is the principle that your mind forms a breath. "If the breath comes in from the heart, you will also know that it comes from the heart." When you practice treasure bottle qi, there is a breath of qi in the dantian, and when you can neither breathe nor inhale, even if you are buried in the ground for a long time, you will not be able to die temporarily. Everyone pay attention! The route we are talking about now comes from the nose. In fact, our human body is also breathing. When the breathing of the body stops, it can be regarded as truly settled.Three things are still in meditation—warmth, longevity, and consciousness. The alaya consciousness has never left the body, and the breath must be full when it is truly settled.A person full of breath, no matter how old he is, any part of his body must be soft, as soft as a baby. Therefore, those who are in samadhi cannot touch him, but can only use Yinpan to knock on their ears. You have practiced kung fu for a while, but your body hasn’t softened yet, and you can’t keep your legs crossed. This is not a two-legged statue, but a two-legged struggle. When you meditate, you are fighting and suffering with your two legs.Last year, a friend wrote to me and asked me about meditation. He said he couldn’t sit still. We don't have time to study hard now, and we still use our legs to do this stuff!Too late!Righteousness is the most important thing.Any posture is fine, and when the time is up, the legs have softened, and they will naturally be able to hold the cross. As long as the air in these two legs is ventilated, the life span will also be extended. You pay attention! If you feel that your body is a little older and stiffer, then you should prepare a little earlier—ready to go.Lao Tzu said: "Concentrating on Qi and making it soft can make a baby?" Therefore, there should be no sectarian views. In this set of cultivation methods, both Buddhism and Taoism can do it, because "fixation" is a common method. Some people are very busy every day, pay attention!Hurry up and meditate more, don't feel busy!Tired! No time to meditate. You have to sit quickly until you can hold your breath. After an hour, you can’t use up a day, but you have to really do it.But there is one thing to pay attention to!The stomach should be empty. There are two sayings in Taoism: "If you want to stay young, you must not be full. If you want to stay alive, you must have no feces in your intestines." Of course, you still need to have enough nutrition. If your intestines and stomach are clean, your energy will be filled easily. "If this is the case, those who can practice Anpan will have no worries, worries, and disordered thoughts, and will get great rewards. You will get the taste of nectar." In this era of material civilization, practicing this method is good for both body and mind, and life span can also be extended. .When you meditate, don't some people shake around? As long as you integrate your mind with your breathing, your breath will not run wild. "There will be no thoughts of worry, worry, or confusion." Therefore, people who study Tantric Buddhism say that people who have opened up the channel from the throat chakra to the heart chakra will have no delusions, and sorrows and troubles will naturally go away. "At that time, the World Honored One, you are ready to explain the subtle dharma to Luo Yun." Sufficient, the major principles are all in place. After Luo Houluo heard the Dharma, he "went to An Tuo Garden." "Under a tree, he sat upright with his body and mind, with no other thoughts, and tied his heart and nose." Rahula began to practice the Anpan method taught by the Buddha. "At that time, Luo Yun, thinking like this," this thinking is in the middle of meditation, right thinking, and there is nothing wrong with it.If you think that you should have no delusions and discard right thoughts, then you are wrong, everyone understands! It is wrong to try to empty right thoughts. "The mind of desire will be liberated, and there will be no more evils. With awareness and insight, mindfulness and peace, wandering in the first meditation." According to the teachings of the Buddha, Luo Yun entered the first meditation, and only then did he really feel great joy and radiate true greatness. Compassion.
