Chapter 48 (4) Bitterness and comprehension

Baoyu begged for food during the day and boarded at night in a water house selling water by the well or in a stable next to the mansion. The winter night was really cold, so I had to ask for a place in a temple house with few incense sticks. It is exactly: the waning moon is half a day cold in Xiaosi, and the frost bell is often hit at the fifth watch. It turned out that the little monk who was ringing the bell was sleepy and secretly begged him to ring the morning bell for him. Baoyu was willing to do it for the convenience of his lodging.Or when it's windy and snowy, you can't go out, you can still ask for fast in the temple.

One day, a one-year-old monk suddenly came here and lived in the temple.Seeing that Baoyu was here, he came to light up the lamp to talk at night. After a few conversations, the old monk felt that this young man was not vulgar, poor but not sour or cheap, and neither corrupt nor pedantic.I wonder in my heart who is so down and out.The more the two talked, the more in-depth they became. Old monk: "It turned out that a young master was in distress and lived here. The broken temple is desolate, is it bitter or not?" Baoyu: "Why is it not suffering? I often hear that Buddhism does not tell lies, saying that there is no suffering is false. Sometimes the suffering is unspeakable, and I can't stand it. But when things happen, I have to detach from the suffering. Suffering is bitter, but also A little bit of sweetness, but this time sweetness is different from worldly happiness."

Old monk: "Do you still have afflictions?" Baoyu: "Why not. It's just the afflictions that are so heavy, I don't know where all these afflictions arise!" Old monk: "The root of love is always unbroken, and the root of Dao is difficult to strengthen. I advise my son, if you want to get rid of troubles, you should convert to Buddhism, so that you can be at ease." Baoyu: "I respect the Buddha's teachings. But I have doubts about the Buddha's teaching of extinction. If the Tathagata is ruthless, why would he spend his whole life for the sake of sentient beings? He wholeheartedly wants to save the suffering of sentient beings. Isn't he just the most powerful person in the world?" A person who loves love? Moreover, the Buddhist Puxian Bodhisattva made great vows to force the world, and we know that vows are power,—couldn’t that wish be love? Since wishes are power, what’s more special about love? Shi, love can save suffering, that is my vow."

Old monk: "Emotion is the source of troubles, and it is also an illusory heart. How can it have the power to save suffering?" Baoyu: "Otherwise. There is a saying: sincerity leads to clarity, and clarity leads to communication; and it also says: sincerity is what makes gold and stone open. Metal and stone can be opened, so why not strength? Generally speaking, the word "sincerity" is the word "sincerity". With love, trust and sincerity, there will be divine power. This is exactly the same as the Buddha's compassionate vow." The old monk couldn't answer for a while. After a while Fang said: "Since the young master said so, if you can't even save yourself now, how can you save others with a word of love? We know that you are suffering in exile and suffering, and you are still tired of love."

Baoyu: "That's not the case. When I was at home, I was honored and pampered. I thought that treating people with affection was the best. But I didn't know that he was a rich and noble brother, and everyone flattered me. People treated me with genuine affection and false affection. I couldn't tell the difference. Now that I am begging along the door, I have experienced countless people with different hearts: ridicule and insult, I meet every day; Every family can meet a Bodhisattva. I know that in the past, I only talked about love at home. It was the end of the world, and the greatest love is still in the world. Therefore, with one thought in my heart, I firmly believe that love is good, Heartless is evil. Therefore, self-knowledge cannot be cured, and it is difficult to convert to Buddhism."

The old monk nodded frequently after listening to Baoyu's words.Sighing a few times, he said: "After all, he is a man of great wisdom and kindness with roots. He is really different from the ignorant people of the world. It is hard to beat him. The old monk Xiaocha is only twenty miles away from the west gate. In the future, the son will still be in trouble. , but there, there will be a reunion.” Baoyu also heard that the monk talked well, so he asked the master what to call him.The old monk said: "I used to be a son of a son, I was even more noble than you when I was young! Now I don't need to go into details, even if I tell you, you may not understand everything.

Let me just say that when I was young, I also had a garden at home, which was not inferior to the garden in my house, but it has long been abandoned. When Baoyu wanted to ask more carefully, he only heard him say again: "The garden on the mansion was inscribed by a nobleman, that's all. I heard that there is a Qinfang River in the city and outside the city, which is the lifeblood of the whole garden, but it is true." ? " Baoyu said: "This is true, but I made up those two words." The old monk pondered for a while, and then said: "My lord, do you know that there was a name of Qinyuan in ancient times?" Baoyu replied that he didn't know it, and asked his master to enlighten him.

The old monk sighed and said: "Princess Qinshui in the Han Dynasty, her garden was named Qinyuan. Later, it was seized and occupied by the powerful Dou Xian. It can be seen that you are a princess, and your life is hard to say. It is like this forbidden garden in the house where the nobles visit relatives. ,——I'm not afraid of your annoyance, but in my opinion, it is inevitable that Dou Xian will come out." Baoyu was silent. The monk also said: "Princess's name Qin, originally the name of the river, is different from the meaning of the son's name, so it should not be compared, but only after I heard the word Qin, I knew the cause and effect of it is beyond the comparison of ordinary eloquent words. "

The more Baoyu felt that this old monk was not an ordinary generation, he was much more convinced than before.Because I asked about the name of the dharma and the name of the temple, I said that I would go there to pay my respects in the future. The old monk then asked Baoyu to say: "It's not that the poor monk talks a lot, the young master probably doesn't know the world affairs, even beggars are well-known in the city, how can such people be allowed to beg for food freely after a long time? They will be bullied. In the end, they will leave the city and go to the outskirts of Biyefang. It's another realm."

These words are imprinted in Baoyu's heart, and he can't help but often yearn for Xishan Qingcui.
