① Hu Shi, courtesy name Shizhi, poet, literary historian.Originally from Jixi, Anhui, he was born in Shanghai on December 17, 1891. He went to the United States to study in 1910, received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Cornell University in 1914, and completed a doctoral dissertation in Columbia University in 1917.He returned to China in the summer of the same year and served as a professor at Peking University. He once advocated literary reform and was a famous figure in the New Culture Movement at that time. In 1928, he served as the president of the Chinese public school and the dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. In 1931, he became the Dean of the Faculty of Arts of Peking University.

In 1938, he served as ambassador to the United States. In September 1945, he was appointed as the president of Peking University.
