Chapter 1 my reading

Hong Kong Local History 叶灵凤 832Words 2018-03-19
My reading, that is to say, besides the school textbooks, I read privately. What I read was not the "extra-curricular readings" as they are now called, but the idle books that were called at that time.As far as I can remember, it started with Shang Shu.The nature of the two books can be said to be completely different. One is "New Youth", which my uncle sent from Shanghai for my elder brother to read; the other is "Xiangyan Conghua", edited by Zhou Shoujuan and others, which my father bought for himself to read.I read both of these books. This happened around 1916, and my family lives in Jiujiang, Jiangxi.I was only eleven or twelve years old at the time, and in fact I didn't understand much of these two books, at least I couldn't fully understand them. But the reason why I still remember these things so far is that they left a little unforgettable impression after all.One is that I read Lu Xun's works from that issue of "New Youth".

Another unforgettable impression is left behind by "Xiangyan Conghua", which is a selection of notes on poetry. One of them said that a painter drew a "Half-cut Beauty Picture" and asked someone to write a poem. Someone wrote: "It's not that the painting is endless, and the soul is broken after writing." Now that I think about it, these two lines of poems are not the same It's not very clever, and naturally at the time I didn't quite understand why I had to "write until I lost my soul".However, for some reason, I seem to appreciate these two poems very much, and I have always remembered them and never forgotten them.

It was these two books that opened the door for me to read, and since then I have always adopted the "two-pronged" approach, so that I can read two different books at the same time, as if, as Ellis said, there is a sage and A traitor lives in his own heart at the same time, reading "serious" books and "serious" books at the same time. It can be said that this tendency is still maintained until now, because I still have the hobby of reading "miscellaneous books". The more out-of-the-ordinary and weird books, the more I want to find them and read them quickly. If I see a book quoted in someone's article that I have never read before, I always want to find it and look it up. Therefore, the more I read the book, the more complicated it becomes. This tendency, as if it was doomed from the beginning of reading, is really interesting.

My father didn't have many books in his hand, and I had the opportunity to read more books when I was in elementary school in Kunshan.I lived at the house of my uncle, who was the third uncle who sent "New Youth" to my elder brother. I read novels like "Yin Bian Yan Yu" and "La Traviata in Paris" there, as well as "Nanshe Series".There is also a small library in the school, which gave me the opportunity to read some popular biographies of famous people. The door to the book world was gradually explored by myself, and I was finally able to walk in.
