Chapter 18 Preface to the second volume of "Shanghai Forest"

This volume contains all literary works: poems, plays, and novels. It's also a translation. Apart from the fragmentary manuscript of "The Life of Klimt Samutin" [2], most of the printed copies were used as a basis for editing.Only "No Time to Swear" [3] has corrected a few typos based on the printed version proofread by the translator himself.Gorky’s early creations were also proofread by the original manuscripts, and several annotations were added. Unfortunately, the original manuscripts of "The Thirteenth Novel About Lermentov" [4] that he tried to preserve were lost in the end. There are suspicious things, and there is no way to cross-examine them, and even the small quotations may not be exactly the same as the first draft.

The translator's selection of the original version of the translation seems to be disorganized. It seems that: firstly, it must be able to be obtained, and secondly, it must be readable to be published, and only then will the translation be started. And sometimes it may be inspired by illustrations, such as the paintings of BA Lekhterev and RBarto, which were once loved by translators. Look at the small quotation before the last novel, you can see [5].Therefore, regardless of the style difference from the previous volume, all the original pictures are also inserted here-this is naturally intended to increase readers' interest, but it also has the meaning of the so-called "hanging sword and empty ridge"[6].As for the method of diction, it is the same as the previous volume, so I won't repeat it here.

End of April 1936, editor. CC [1] This article was originally printed in the second volume of "Shanghai Lin". The second volume "Zaolin", the copyright page was published in October 1936, including Gorky's satirical poem "Ode to the Philistine", Bedny's satirical poem "No Time to Swear", Lunacharsky's play "Dong Quixote Liberated", Gorky's creation anthology, etc. 〔2〕 "The Life of Kerim Samkin" is a translation of "The Life of Kerim Samkin", a novel by Gorky. The "residual manuscripts" printed in "Shanghai Forest" are only the beginning of the first chapter of the first part of the book.

〔3〕 "No Time to Spite", a long poem satirized by the Soviet poet Biednyi (translated by Biednyi) satirizes Trotsky. [4] "The Thirteenth Novel About Lermontov" written by the Soviet writer Pavlenko, is a short story about the great Russian poet Lermontov written based on the materials in the history of literature. [5] There are eight illustrations of Rechtelev in the two early works of Gorky printed in the second volume of "The Forest Above the Sea"; There are four illustrations by Bardo, and the translator said in the "Little Citation" of the translation: "The attached three illustrations (according to the fact that there were only three illustrations when the article was published in the monthly "Translation"), readers can take a closer look. : How powerful, how prominent it is.”

〔6〕The language of "hanging swords and empty ridges" can be found in "Wen Xuan" Volume 43, Liang Liujun of the Southern Dynasty "Reanswering Liu Mo's Lingzhao Shu". "Historical Records Wu Taibo's Family" contains: "Wu envoy Ji Zha was hired in Lu... North Xu Jun, Xu Jun loved Ji Zha's sword, and he dared not speak out; Ji Zha knew it in his heart, so he did not offer it to the state. Returned to Xu Jun , Xu Jun is dead, so he untied his sword and tied it to the tree of Xu Jun's grave."
