Academic life 季羡林 1949Words 2018-03-18
caught in the vortex of the meeting Liberation came in 1949.At that time, like most of the professors at Peking University, my eyes were suddenly filled with light, and my mood was uplifted, which was unparalleled.I feel that if you divide your life into two periods or parts, now is the beginning of a new period. At that time, I was only 38 years old, not yet middle-aged, I was not deeply involved in the world, I had a lot of fantasies, and I had no difficulty in accepting new things. I was originally an introverted person, and I was most afraid of communicating with others; In a large crowd, at a grand banquet or reception, surrounded by well-dressed, jeweled men and women socialites or courtesans, the whole body is tense and awkward, and I want to find a crack to burrow into the ground. It makes me envious to see some people deal with advances and retreats like ducks in water. But fate or chance pushed me to the stage of administrative work; and pushed me to the center of social activities, even the field of international activities.

Once the People's Government sent someone to take over Peking University, I became a busy man.Handle the work in the department on the one hand. For a while, the Department of Oriental Languages became the largest department in the school due to the need for talents of Oriental languages in national diplomacy. The number of teachers has increased by 10 times, and the number of students has increased by more than 200 times, from three or four to 800.As the head of the department, I can imagine how busy and tense my work is.On the other hand, I participated in the preparatory and organizational work of the Professor Association, and further participated in the preparatory and organizational work of the Faculty Union. It seems that the intention of the party organization is to form a school-wide trade union. However, at the stage of preparing for the establishment of the Faculty Union, we encountered enormous resistance: Peking University workers opposed the union with the faculty. At that time, the slogan "The working class must lead everything" was loudly shouted. The teaching staff are considered to be bourgeois, how can they sit on an equal footing with the workers? In this way, wouldn’t the positions of the leader and the led be reversed! How can this work! Thunder, absolutely not.Fortunately, one of the top leaders of our country at the time made a timely statement: "University professors are not workers, but the working class." With instructions from "above", the workers dared not stand up again. The Peking University trade union was finally established.I was active during this period.I served as the minister, secretary-general, and chairman of the beach branch of the Peking University trade union, and then served as the chairman of the trade union after I left the city. For this reason, I was criticized many times during the "Cultural Revolution".This is the punishment for my unsanctified and immoral behavior, and I deserve it, so no one else is to blame. This is a later story, let's not talk about it for the time being.

At that time, Peking University often invited some senior revolutionary seniors to give lectures at Sandy Democracy Square to educate us.Marshal Chen Yi has been here before, and was very warmly welcomed by the teachers and students of the school.Secondly, what impressed me the most was Comrade Zhou Yang's report. I remember that it was not in the Democracy Square, but in an auditorium. He said very humorously: "The Kuomintang has more taxes, and the Communist Party will have more." His words have been heard by many people, and it really reflects the actual situation.Until today, almost half a century has passed, and the situation has not changed at all. There have been many calls by leaders to streamline meetings, with little success.Temporarily restrained, immediately swelled, becoming an extremely difficult to treat chronic disease.

The order of the school was not yet very stable, and the central leadership immediately decided to carry out the "three evils", "five evils" and thought reform campaigns nationwide. We all know that when a movement comes, the first thing is to have a meeting; big meetings, small meetings, big meetings and small meetings, all in all, meetings, meetings, meetings, meetings will make you exhausted and messed up.At Peking University, in the era when the extreme "left" line was pursued, almost everyone passed the test of ideological remolding and professors.Self-examination, public comment. This kind of self-examination is commonly called "bathing". "Bathing" is divided into "big basin", "medium basin" and "small basin".The leaders at the school level, as well as the few professors who are relatively close to the Kuomintang, are naturally bound to be "big pots."In other words, it is to hold a school-wide meeting to conduct self-examination to all teachers and students in the school.Check deeply to pass.Whether it is profound or not is entirely up to the masses to decide. If you can't pass the test once, you will come again for the second or third time, until you cry and touch the hearts of the masses, the "bath" can be considered as complete. One of them added a side note to his review draft: "Cry! Cry again!", which became a good talk for a while.

I, as an intellectual, am of course "guilty".It's a pity that the crime is not deep enough, and the status is not high enough, so I can only make do with a "middle basin".Checked twice and passed.I didn't mark "crying!" on the manuscript I checked, and I didn't really cry, so it passed smoothly. After taking a "bath" by myself, I really feel refreshed and extremely excited. Now that I have obtained the qualifications, I can participate in leading the ideological reform movement of the Department of Oriental Languages; later, I even became the leader of the leading groups of the Faculties of Literature and Law.The secretary or deputy team leader is Comrade Yu Shutong, the secretary to the Dean of the Law School. He used to be an underground party member and a person with real power. In this way, of course I became busier, and it showed that I had more and more meetings.Meetings during the day, meetings at night, meetings every day.

I was really caught in the vortex of the meeting. After holding meetings for thirty or forty years, I once said to people: My current major is meeting, and my specialization is also meeting. It's a pity that there is no such course as "Conference Learning" in the university. If there is one, I would be the ideal lecturer.I really worked hard at the meeting and it took time. From top to bottom, from inside to outside, from big to small, from long to short, from on-campus to off-campus, from domestic to foreign, with different forms and contents, I can handle it like a fish in water. Outlining the outline, grasping the essentials and exploring the mystery, both theory and practice have reached a very high level. If the Education Commission and the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council approve the establishment of a doctoral program of "Conference Studies", I believe that I will be the first qualified "doctoral supervisor".

To add a little more to 1949 During this year, I wrote two articles that can be regarded as academic. One of them, "Liezi and the Buddhist Canon", has already been discussed above. If 1949 is divided into two halves, there is another article that can be said to belong to the second half. This article is: "The Official History of the Three Kingdoms, Two Jins, Southern and Northern Dynasties and Indian Legends".
