Chapter 13 social education movement

Academic life 季羡林 1892Words 2018-03-18
In my opinion, the social education movement is actually the prelude to the "Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution".I will now put these two movements together. The socialist education movement, Peking University is a pilot, a step ahead, soon after the movement started, the school was clearly divided into factions: those who were punished and those who punished people.I also ignorantly joined the ranks of the whole person. But there is one thing I don't understand, and I can't figure it out. For the first time after liberation, a little "reactionary thinking" sprouted: the leaders of the school are all old party members and cadres sent from above, and we bourgeois intellectuals can't play much role. Why does it mean that we "rule" the school? I can't figure it out.

Later, the Beijing Municipal Party Committee intervened and held an international hotel conference to rehabilitate the criticized school leaders. This is where the cause of the "Cultural Revolution" lay. In the autumn of 1965, after attending the International Hotel Conference, I was sent to Nankou Village in the suburbs of Beijing to carry out the rural social education movement. We have really become leaders here, and all the power of the party, government, finances and documents is in our hands. But the requirements are also very strict: you are not allowed to cook by yourself, and the whole village takes turns to eat pies, and fish, meat and eggs are not allowed. My identity and salary were not allowed to be revealed. At that time, the daily wages of farmers were only three or four cents, and my salary was four to five hundred. I let them out like this, so as not to surprise the farmers.Thirty years have passed, and today, when we go to the countryside, we refuse to disclose the amount of our wages, for fear of making the peasants laugh at us.Looking back at the present and recalling the past, I really can't help feeling that it is the same!

In the winter of this year, Yao Wenpi's article "Comment on the New Historical Drama "Hai Jui Dismissed from Office"" was published, ringing the bell of the "Cultural Revolution".I know all three owners of the so-called "Sanjia Village", and I accidentally said it in Nankou Village. This was immediately taken to heart by one of my "students".Later, during the "Cultural Revolution", this student showed his true colors. In order to stand out, there are quite a few surprising actions, such as putting up slogan-style posters, but also signing their own names, which caused a sensation. He also hit me hard, "beating" me into a boy from "Sanjia Village".

I was called back to school on June 4, 1966 to participate in the "Cultural Revolution".The initial stage is to criticize the so-called "bourgeois academic authority".This time the campaign was targeting intellectuals again, it couldn't be more obvious, and I was naturally among those criticized.Although I dare not claim to be an "academic authority", I am completely convinced that I am a bourgeois without complaint.Despite the onslaught of movement, I made it through without much effort. Later, Peking University established a "revolutionary committee", headed by the so-called "Lafayette" who wrote the first "Marxist-Leninist poster".This person has a background, has a wide voice, and is said to be able to reach the sky, and has a close relationship with Jiang Qing. She is ignorant, and every time she speaks, she will make mistakes; but she is arrogant and domineering, and she is hot.At this time, she became a national celebrity, and tens of thousands, even hundreds of thousands, came to Peking University every day to "learn scriptures" and worship. It made a good Yan Garden in a mess and a miasma.

With the development of the movement, Peking University gradually divided factions. The "Lafayette" faction is called "Xinbei University Commune", and it is the "establishment faction" who grasps the power. Its opposite is called "Jinggangshan", which is oppressed. It's hard to say how different the two factions are in their actions. They both fight, smash, and rob, and they don't understand what the law is.The above call: "Revolution is not guilty, rebellion is justified." This is the supreme law. I made it past the first strong storm, and the problem was settled.I was free and easy for a while, and my life was very comfortable. If I go on like this, there will be no more risks. Now I am no different from Wu Zixu who passed Zhaoguan.I'm a timid person, that's normal; but sometimes I can be extra bold. This has happened to me a few times in my life, and it's perverted. And thinking about it now, if I have any value as a person, the value is manifested in abnormality.

This abnormality appeared again during the "Cultural Revolution". When the "Lafayette" relied on the background to do whatever he wanted, there were more and more brutal things on campus.Ransacking homes, criticizing, beating and swearing at people, hanging big wooden signs around the neck, wearing high hats on the head, insulting people arbitrarily, making rumors boldly, and even killing people with spears, not to mention human nature, even animal nature is gone.I think this is not in line with the mass line, or someone's "revolutionary line."I was living a stable life, but I lost my temper again and jumped out by myself. I knew the danger.I wrote in my diary: "In order to defend someone's revolutionary line, even if I am smashed to pieces, I will not hesitate to do so." This is completely sincere, and there is no hypocrisy at all.

At the same time, I'm a little more confident: I don't have braids on my head, or tails on my ass.I have never joined the Kuomintang or any reactionary organization, and I have never done anything against the people. With a sense of adventure, luck and a little confidence, I stood up against that "Lafayette".I totally "jumped out on my own". Unexpectedly, or can be said to have been thought of, I jumped into the "bullpen" with this jump.I have a certain influence among the masses. When I got up to break ground on Tai Sui, the "Lafayette" hated me to the bone and wanted to put me to death.I was ransacked, denounced, beaten until my head was bloody, my nose was bruised and my face was swollen.I'm not the kind of person who is open-minded and doesn't care about anything.I was dizzy from the fight for a moment, and made up my mind to end my own life by myself.Once I made up my mind, my mood seemed unusually calm, almost terrifyingly calm.I put all the sleeping pills and potions I had accumulated over the years into my pocket, and finally took a last look at my aunt and wife who were in trouble with me. I was just about to go out and escape by jumping over the wall when there was a thunderous knock on the door: "Xinbei University Commune "The Red Guards came to escort me to the big dining hall to criticize the struggle. This is truly a close call! This criticism was very fierce and brutal, and I was beaten until I lay on the ground and couldn't stand up.However, I got an "epiphany": there is no limit to a person's ability to endure beatings and torture.I can bear it!I am not dead!I want to live!
