Chapter 35 The situation in the Korean War and our policy[1]

(September 5, 1950) Judging from the current situation, the possibility of protracted Korean War is gradually increasing. In the past, our estimation of the situation of the Korean War had two possibilities: a quick solution and a long-term one.The so-called quick decision means that the Korean People's Army took advantage of the victory to pursue and drive the remaining puppet troops of the U.S. Army and Syngman Rhee[2] into the sea.Now that the United States has increased its forces in Korea, the likelihood of a protracted war increases accordingly. It is possible for the Korean people to persist in this protracted war situation. They have mobilized more than one million manpower, and the Korean People's Army now has more than a hundred thousand men, and it will continue to be supplemented in the future. The Korean people were very brave in their struggle. While the American planes were blowing up the bridge, the Korean people were repairing it.At the beginning, it was bombed during the day and repaired at night, and later it was bombed and repaired at any time. When the plane came, the North Korean people just hid aside, and then went to repair the bridge as usual. At the beginning of the war, the U.S. imperialists thought that the Korean people would be afraid if they bombed it with air force, but they hit a snag. This point also shows that once the Korean people stand up under the long-term rule and oppression of Japan, they will never allow any imperialism to invade them again. The Korean people have become very resolute under the long-term Japanese enslavement.Under the oppression of imperialism, other nations in the East have also become very resolute. The Chinese nation is such a resolute fighting nation.Although we sometimes encountered some difficulties during our struggle, we did not rely on Guanyin Bodhisattva to save lives, but relied on our own hands to overcome difficulties.Today, although the possibility of protracting the Korean War has increased, the final victory belongs to the Korean people, because the sympathy of the peace-loving and democratic people all over the world for the Korean people has been and is constantly increasing.

After the Second World War, when U.S. imperialism helped Chiang Kai-shek launch China's civil war, the sympathy of the world was on the side of the Chinese people. The Chinese revolution has a global nature. The Chinese Revolution educated the people of the world for the first time in the East, and the Korean War educated the people of the world for the second time.People all over the world are thinking about this question.Although a protracted Korean War is not as good as a quick solution, it can educate the Korean people and the people of the world better if it lasts. U.S. imperialism faces many difficulties today, with internal quarrels and external inconsistencies. It has only one strength in military affairs, that is, it has more iron, but it has three weaknesses in addition, which together are one long and three short. The three weaknesses are: first, the front line is too long, from Berlin, Germany to North Korea; second, the transportation route is too far, separated by two oceans, the Atlantic and the Pacific; third, the combat effectiveness is too weak.In World War II, Germany’s Hitler[3] front was from the Baltic Sea to the Black Sea, Japan’s Tojo[4]’s front was from Northeast China to Southeast Asia, both of which were shorter than the U.S. front from Berlin to Korea. On the transport route, Hitler's journey from Berlin to Moscow was also shorter than that of two oceans. In terms of combat effectiveness, the U.S. military is inferior to the German and Japanese armies. Not only Zheng Dongguo [5] knows this, but our Eighth Route Army has also known it for a long time. The enemy is not to be feared, its airs and aggressiveness are to frighten. However, U.S. imperialism may try to mess up today, and it can do anything. If it wants to do that, it will be bad if we are not prepared, and we can deal with it if we are prepared. The so-called doing that is nothing more than fighting the third world war, and the atomic bomb will be fought for a long time, which will be longer than the first and second world wars.We Chinese people are used to fighting wars. Our wish is not to fight wars, but if you must fight, we have to let you fight. You hit yours, I hit mine, you hit the atomic bomb, I hit the grenade, grab your weakness, follow you to fight, and finally defeat you. When fighting a war, it is not a small fight but a big fight, not a short fight but a long fight, and not an ordinary fight but an atomic bomb. We must be fully prepared. If you must do that, we will follow.

We must always be ready to deal with U.S. imperialist aggression. Our military, political, economic, cultural and other aspects of construction must be discussed and decided by taking into account the fact that the enemy is right in front of us.The state budget for 1951 should also be formulated in the same way. Published based on the transcript of the speech kept by the Central Archives. -------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ note [1] This is Mao Zedong's speech at the Ninth Session of the Central People's Government Committee.
