Chapter 137 Goals of Ewha Womans University and Korea University

The educational goal of South Korea's first-class universities is to cultivate international talents, which is different from Japan. Since the establishment of this goal, South Korea has already begun to integrate with the international community. The International College of Ewha Womans University, where I teach, not only teaches in English, but many students who are educated here set their goal of becoming leaders of international organizations after graduation. The university's reference manual also clearly states that "becoming the leader of an international institution is our teaching goal".

International institutions in the world include various agencies of the United Nations, the IMF, and the WTO.In other words, they will inherit the post of Ban Ki-moon, the eighth Secretary-General of the United Nations.Ban Ki-moon has become the Secretary-General of the United Nations, so this time it is the turn of Korean women to show their talents in international institutions such as the United Nations. For this reason, Ewha Womans University has formed a fellowship school with many universities around the world. So is Korea University.Korea University's educational goal is to cultivate talents who can become the head of the Asian headquarters of a multinational company in terms of business skills. This is not a very clear goal. However, not only Koreans want to achieve such a goal, every graduate wants to achieve such a goal.Korea University not only actively accepts foreign students, but also continuously sends its students to study abroad. In other words, like American universities, Korea University implements multi-ethnic and multi-cultural education, and puts the requirements of globalization first.

Although it is good to aim for multi-ethnic groups, after establishing such a goal, it will not work if you do not understand the other party's language. Moreover, such education is not valid without a good understanding of the foreign culture. In order to understand countries such as Japan, China, and the United States, South Korea regards the elimination of existing racial discrimination as a prerequisite. To this end, Korea University has implemented a plan that Korean college students have to receive foreign education for half a year. This form is very common in the United States, in English it is "study aboard" (overseas study).

In 2007, Korea University celebrated its 100th anniversary.Generally speaking, at this time, the school will invest in the establishment of new school buildings, memorial halls, etc. as a commemoration. However, Korea University did not do this, but built student dormitories for Korean students sent by the university at fellowship schools such as the University of California, Davis, and the University of British Columbia. Korea University, Yonsei University, and Ewha Womans University are all private universities, and all expenses are borne by themselves without government subsidies.Where did these funds come from?It is the donation of graduates and the assistance of large companies such as LG and POSCO.In fact, famous private universities in South Korea have many facilities named after large companies such as "Pohang Memorial Hall", which is very similar to the United States.

I am a #visiting professor at Korea University and an honorary professor at Ewha Womans University, and I am surprised every time I see this change in Korean universities. From the perspective of the government and the media, the Korean people's sense of crisis has deep roots. I sometimes wonder if they will go back to the 19th century. However, when I look at Korean students and international companies, I sigh: "Good job!"
