Chapter 97 "I don't want to work hard for the future"

In the aforementioned Nihon Keizai News survey, only the problem of young people’s “material desires” was mentioned. After reading the following data, you will realize such a problem: the latest generation of Japanese children does not even have the minimum “motivation”. "It's all gone. In March 2007, the "Comparative Survey of Primary School Students in Japan, China and South Korea" published by the Japan Youth Research Institute showed that compared with children in China and Korea, Japanese children are less motivated to do things (Figure 6-2). When surveying elementary school students in Japan, China, and South Korea, when asked "For the sake of the future, have you ever thought about working hard now?" Among the students in Beijing and Seoul, more than 70% answered "yes", while in Tokyo only less than 70% answered "yes". 50% of the students answered this way. Finally, less than half of Japanese children answered "Yes" to the question "Have you ever thought about becoming a child who can learn?"

Although the research institute is analyzing the question of "why Japanese children have low enthusiasm for learning", the more important question is: Japanese children have no awareness of learning at all. Could it be that today's children don't know what they are working hard for? If this is the case, I think it must be influenced by the autistic psychology of the whole nation. Of course, this survey was conducted among countries with different national conditions, which has a certain impact on the results, so it cannot be completely regarded as authoritative. However, I think for China and South Korea, this survey result is basically accurate. In other words, Chinese and Korean children do study harder than Japanese children. To put it to the extreme, the children in China and South Korea are just like the Japanese children in the era of "exam-oriented education" many years ago. They are working hard for the future. In order to change one's own destiny, in order to be able to achieve success is constantly working hard.

On the other hand, Japanese children are completely ignorant of dreams and goals. They neither plan to work hard for their future, nor do they think about how to become able to learn and love learning. There is also a survey for company employees. When they are asked "Do you want to be the president of the company?" You may have already thought of the result, and most people's answers are negative. From this point of view, not only our students have such a mentality, but even the core strength of Japanese society is in this state of not wanting to make progress. So, I would like to ask the young people of today: "What do you really want?"

But I also know that the reason for this situation is not in the children, but in the parents, society and education system.Just as the cause of low learning ability is not just a problem of "learning ability", so if only changing the teaching content and teaching time, it will not solve any problems. Regarding the question of what kind of education system Japan should implement in the future, I will explain my views in the next chapter.
