Chapter 46 18. Chinese students studying abroad

Why do Chinese students yearn for Western countries so much?Over the past 60 years, the number of Chinese students studying abroad has grown rapidly. In the 20th century, the destinations of Chinese students studying abroad were mainly the Soviet Union and Eastern European countries, but now, they have spread all over the world. In the beginning, it was mainly the state that funded students to study abroad.Later, more and more Chinese students began to study abroad at their own expense. At present, compared with other countries, the number of Chinese students studying abroad ranks among the top in the world.According to a recent survey, 80% of young people in China want to study abroad.

The main reason is that Chinese students hope to broaden their horizons by studying abroad, get in touch with Western culture, and connect with the world. At the same time, more and more foreign students come to China to study. These figures may vary due to different assessment methods (see table below). The number of international students in China increased from 1,000 in 1978 to 223,000 in 2008.Chinese universities gather a large number of international students from all over the world! This was unimaginable just a few years ago... Chinese universities are constantly moving towards internationalization, and competition with foreign universities is also intensifying, which means constant changes.

So far, China has established teaching cooperation with 188 countries in the world and 40 international organizations (such as UNESCO and the World Bank). In addition, 154 education-related contracts were signed. Today, more than 180,000 Chinese students study abroad each year, 87 percent of whom are funded by their parents. The number of foreign students in France ranks third in the world, and the proportion of Chinese students and Asian students (28.9%) is increasing year by year. Within two years, the number of Chinese students studying in France has grown to 27,100, making them the second largest group of foreign students in France.Chinese people love France, its culture, art of life, romance and variety.

They study very hard and obey French laws and regulations. They enter the best higher education institutions in France: major universities, public universities and central universities, etc. Selective distribution of international students in France Increase in the number of students by nationality Morocco 30300 +3.4% China 27100 +34.4% Algeria 20800 -3.9% Tunisia 12821 +23.4% Senegal 9399 +2.4% In foreign universities, most Chinese students choose to study economics or management. They are more inclined to study for a master's degree in finance, international trade, business, management, telecommunications or high technology in Europe or the United States.

Chinese agricultural engineers often graduated from the Netherlands, while Chinese businessmen often studied in the United States or the United Kingdom. All young people who want to study in France, no matter which school they choose, must pass the "French Knowledge Test" (TCF) and register at the "Sino-French Campus" institution. They can also pass the TEF exam, the "Assessment of French Proficiency".You can see the quality of Chinese university French courses when you see so many students in Asia and China who speak French very fluently, and these students have never even been to France!

For more than ten years, France has been one of the countries they yearn for, and it ranks fifth among the countries most yearn for by Chinese students. As for the influence of China on France, we can see that 150 secondary schools teach Chinese language courses to 8000 students, and the rest mainly appear in universities and colleges.A total of 30,000 French people are learning Chinese, so France is the country with the largest number of Chinese learners in Europe.
