Chapter 1 Chapter 1 Responsibilities and Tasks of the General Manager

In an enterprise, the general manager is the highest person in charge of the company and exercises the highest decision-making power of the company. Its responsibility is to use limited resources (manpower, financial resources, material resources, machinery and equipment, technology and methods, time, information) to bring the greatest results (market reputation, market share, profitability, return on investment and risk avoidance) to the enterprise. .As the soul of the enterprise, the insight, knowledge and courage of the general manager determine the direction of the enterprise and the healthy development of the organization.

What qualities must a successful general manager possess? A successful general manager must be an all-rounder with strong thinking, judgment and practical ability, as pointed out by Harvard Business School in its "General Manager" textbook: a good planner; an organizational expert; a coordinator ; a controller; an analyst; a facilitator; a designer; a communicator; in many cases must also be a teacher; a studious person; must be a decision maker. A successful general manager must be clear about his own role, because it determines the effectiveness of the general manager's leadership. If he is not clear about his role, he will make himself nervous, and even affect the emotions of employees. at a loss.Over time, the habit formed in the enterprise is: do what the leader tells you to do, do less and make fewer mistakes, and do more and make more mistakes; employees are not motivated and have no innovative spirit. Therefore, the general manager should focus his work on thinking, judgment, analysis, planning, and decision-making, pay attention to the correct positioning and effective performance of his duties, and should not compete with employees for jobs, let alone forget his main tasks.

A successful general manager should be a good instructor and supervisor, who can keep a calm mind and have a clear mind at all times, so that he can judge and analyze correctly, make decisions correctly and quickly, and let employees have the right direction to execute. The ancients said that "the top beam is not straight and the bottom beam is crooked", "the general is incompetent and exhausts the army to death", if the general manager does a good job, the employees will be relaxed and efficient. With the rapid development of various industries and the continuous expansion of the scale of enterprises, the types of business operations of enterprises have become more and more complex, and the business behavior has become increasingly complex. The number of general managers has also increased significantly.Due to the differences in industries and departments and the increasing complexity of corporate organizations, more and more general manager work areas have been "developed", so there are more and more types of general managers. So far, there are at least 7 common different types of general manager job positions that co-exist:

1. The position of general manager of functional business This kind of position appears in a company with complete functions, and it is the overall general manager position in the "traditional concept".It reports to and is accountable to the entire Board of Directors (or the Chairman), while under it several functional managers report to and are accountable to him. 2. The position of general manager of multi-departmental business This position occurs in multi-sector companies and is a general manager position for corporate operations.Other business general managers and managers of other functions and agencies report to him and are accountable. The biggest difference between this type and the first type of general manager is that the general manager of this multi-departmental business is usually not responsible for considering the various departments of the company and his own short-term business plan and content when working like the first type of manager.

3. The position of general manager of enterprise group This kind of general manager has to report and be responsible to a general manager upwards, and there are several business general managers reporting to and responsible for him below him. This job position has fewer long-term strategic planning responsibilities and fewer parallel relationships outside the company than the general manager of a multi-department business. 4. Branch general manager position This type of general manager reports to and is accountable to a general manager. The most important responsibility of this position is to be responsible for the profit and loss of the project he is responsible for.The same as the general manager position of the enterprise group, it also has less long-term strategic planning responsibilities, less parallel interpersonal relationships outside the enterprise, but more short-term operating responsibilities.

5. Position of General Manager of Subsidiary This type of general manager mostly reports upwards and has less responsibility for the overall enterprise. For example, a typical general manager of a subsidiary will report to and be responsible for a general manager of a conglomerate, but will not have to assume other responsibilities related to product, after-sales service, marketing, etc.Subsidiary general managers rely to some extent on the help of the corporate (or conglomerate) HR, legal, accounting, public relations, and financial departments. This general manager position is the same as the previous type. However, it has fewer subordinate employees and more parallel business relationships.

6. Product and Marketing General Manager Position Almost all marketing personnel report and are responsible to him, and this job position basically does not assume the responsibility for long-term strategic planning, but is responsible for coordinating the relationship between production personnel and staff related to the industry (or several industries). This type of general manager has fewer subordinates and more parallel business relationships. 7. Operational general manager position This kind of general manager position basically has no responsibility for long-term strategic planning, but is mainly responsible for short-term production and operation activities, which may be the manager of one or several factories, and is only partially responsible for the calculated "profit".There are personnel, accounting and other agencies reporting to him.He is responsible for almost all production, sales and service personnel. He also has some parallel business relationships - but unlike the product and marketing general manager position, he does not have to be closely linked to parallel business relationships.

Today, functional business general managers, branch general managers, and operating general managers are the most widely available among the above seven types of general manager positions. The least common types of positions are general managers of multi-department business and general managers of enterprise groups (according to statistics, the two are only 1% of the total number of general manager positions). For example, there are probably fewer than 1,500 conglomerate general manager positions in the United States. But one thing to note is that in the modern economy, there are more types of general managers than those mentioned above, and some are even rarer or unrecognized (such as "regional" general managers, etc.).
