Chapter 16 Summarize

Words have the power to nurture and inspire, or to threaten and destroy. When we notice our children's efforts and show appreciation, we help them develop hope and confidence. On the contrary, when we judge children, it will cause anxiety and resistance in children. It is clear that negative qualitative words (“lazy,” “stupid,” “mean”) can be harmful to children; oddly enough, positive words (“good,” “perfect,” “best good") may also be worthless. Our attitude towards children should be positive and encouraging. We acknowledge effort and express appreciation ("You worked so hard for that." "Thank you for your help."), but we cannot judge our children, we cannot characterize them.

When trouble occurs, we seek solutions, not blame and criticism.Even unavoidable anger can be expressed without accusation, without qualitative judgment.Behind all these humane communication skills is a deep understanding and respect for children.
