If we accept natural power, or the authority of the father, as the fundamental principle of human society, we should inquire into the extent of this power, and the nature of this power. Is there any reason for it other than its benefit to the child, the weakness of the child itself, and the natural love of the father for the child? When the child is no longer weak, when his mind and body are mature, can he decide for himself all the questions necessary to preserve life?Had he thus become his own master, free from the interference of all, not even his father? Is it not more certain that a child loves himself than a father loves his child?
