Chapter 46 46

Emile 卢梭 222Words 2018-03-18
The feeling of difficulty is one with the desire to escape from difficulty; the thought of pleasure comes from the desire to enjoy. All desire means lack, and all lack is pain. Our misery, therefore, consists in the disproportion between our desires and our abilities.Sentient beings can only be truly happy when their abilities and desires are in balance. So, what is human wisdom?Where is the road to true happiness? It is not enough to limit our desires. If our desires are smaller than our capabilities, then some of our talents will be wasted and we will not be able to enjoy our full existence.Likewise, it is not enough to simply expand our capabilities, because if our desires are also expanded, we will only be more miserable.
