Chapter 31 Criticism only provokes resistance

I want to ask you a question: Do you often criticize your employees or subordinates? Think they're either wrong here or there? If so, first look at the following example: Crowley was a notorious murderer. He didn't smoke or drink, but he brutally killed a policeman. The New York police finally arrested him on May 7, 1931.Former New York police chief Maloney commented: "This thug is a rare murderer in the history of New York law and order, and he killed without blinking an eye." Before he was arrested, Crowley was flirting with his girlfriend on a highway in Long Island when a police officer stopped by his car and said, "Please show your driver's license." He fired a few shots at the policeman with his pistol. After the policeman fell to the ground, Crowley jumped out of the car, grabbed the policeman's gun, and fired several times at the prone body.

But Crowley defended himself, saying, "Under my clothes, is a weary heart—but a kind heart, which would not hurt anyone." It can be seen that Crowley did not feel that there was anything wrong with him.In fact, there are many criminals who are as obsessed with death as Crowley. Please listen to the following passage: "I dedicated my youth to people, to entertain them easily, to help them be happy. All I got was disgrace and being wanted." This is the confession of Al Karp, the former "public enemy number one" of the United States and the most vicious gangster who ran rampant in Chicago. He never blamed himself, and plausibly claimed to be a philanthropist - he believed society had misunderstood his good deeds.

Sultz was also a notorious criminal in New York, as he was before he was shot dead in a gangster infighting. In a conversation with a journalist, he once said that he was a man of the public good, and he believed in it. In this regard, Lewis, the warden of Sing Sing Prison, commented: "In Sing Sing Prison, almost no criminals will admit that they are bad guys. They will defend themselves, explain why they want to pry open the safe, why they pull the trigger. And Most of them will consciously justify their anti-social behavior with faulty logic, insisting that they should not be imprisoned."

Not only do Al Cap, Crowley, Sultz and those desperadoes in prison not blame themselves, but what is the attitude of ordinary people when they face their own mistakes? The late "Department Store King" John Wanamaker summed up his successful management experience, once said: "I have understood 30 years ago that it is unwise to criticize others. In fact, what everyone does It’s hard to be perfect, so how can you demand others?” Wanamaker has long realized this, but it took me more than 40 years of exploration in this indifferent world to understand the mystery. Therefore, as a manager, you must remember: criticizing others is useless, it will only stimulate the inner defenses of others and make them try to defend themselves.Ninety-nine times out of 100, no matter what a person does wrong, he will not blame himself, and no matter how serious his mistake is.Criticism is dangerous because it often hurts the employee's precious self-esteem, hurts his sense of self-esteem, and provokes him to rebel.
