Home Categories Biographical memories A Dream in the Twilight of the Lotus Lamp: The Life of Lin Huiyin
Lin Huiyin's talent was first shown to the society in those days when Tagore visited Beijing, in April and May of 1924.At that time, not long after Tagore won the Nobel Prize in Literature, the poet was invited to China by the Beijing Lecture Society. The hosts of the Lecture Society were Liang Qichao and Lin Changmin.Xu Zhimo acted as an interpreter, who was also considered to be running errands. He made detailed contact in advance, and then accompanied him throughout the process. From April 12 to May 30, for more than fifty days, Tagore went to Shanghai, Hangzhou, Nanjing, Jinan, Beijing, Taiyuan, Hankou and many other cities, covering half of China. His arrival became a major cultural event at that time.

On April 23, as soon as Tagore arrived in Beijing, Lin Huiyin went to the station to attend the welcome and reception. On the 25th, together with Liang Qichao, Lin Changmin and Hu Shi, she accompanied Tagore on a tour of Beihai, visited the Songpo Library, and went to the Jingxinzhai Tea Party. On the 26th, he and Xu Zhimo, Chen Xiying and others accompanied Tagore to visit Fayuan Temple in the suburbs of Beijing and watch lilac flowers. On the 27th, Lin Huiyin accompanied Tagore to visit the Imperial Garden of the Forbidden City, and called on Puyi, also serving as an interpreter. In the evening, I will accompany you to participate in the welcome banquet for Tagore in Beijing literary circles.

On the 28th, she and Liang Sicheng accompanied Tagore to the Temple of Heaven to meet Beijing students.Xu Zhimo acted as translator. On the 29th, I accompanied Tagore with Hu Shi, Xu Zhimo, Wang Tongzhao, Yan Huiqing and others to attend the welcome meeting of the Beijing Painting Circle in the Guizhou Guild Hall before noon.In the afternoon, attend the reception of Johnston. In the last ten days, she, Ding Xilin, Hu Shi and others accompanied Ling Shuhua to welcome Tagore's family tea party held in his private residence. For many days, Lin Huiyin's accompanying schedule was always full.

The scene of Tagore’s meeting with Beijing students is vividly described in Wu Yong’s "History of the Temple of Heaven": "Miss Lin is as beautiful as a flower, and walks with the old poet arm in arm. It’s like a picture of three friends with pines, bamboos and plums. Xu Zhimo’s translation uses the most beautiful rhetoric in the Chinese vocabulary, and it is written in Xiashi official dialect, and it is a small poem after another, flying waterfalls and flowing springs, and the babble is pleasant to hear.” Because of its vivid description, this text has been widely circulated, so the location is also misrepresented as the Temple of Heaven. Some biographies exaggerate as "there are so many people in front of the Temple of Heaven that nothing can get through".There is also a biography with heavy ink: "The wind chimes on the cornice of the Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests rang like flowing water, and the copper sound was quiet, like a lofty Sanskrit song, flying leisurely from the sky." Originally, Tagore's speech was fixed on the Circular Mound of the Temple of Heaven, However, considering how rich the students are, and the tickets to the Temple of Heaven are expensive, they temporarily changed to Xiannongtan, which does not charge tickets. The "Morning Post" published a notice to change the location of the lecture, and later the "Morning Post" also reported in detail about the lecture at Xiannongtan: "At two o'clock in the afternoon, there were countless male and female students driving or walking into the altar. Crowded. The forum is located in the east altar of Yunei (the site of the Yipin Chadian Club), and the audience around the altar is full of audiences, with as many as two to three thousand people. Representatives of various groups in the Beijing academic circles gather on the altar, Tianjin Lubo Club Representatives were also sent to Beijing to welcome them. Taishi did not arrive until 3:05. He took a car and got off in front of the Yutan Gate. Lin Changmin was the guide, and the accompanying guests were his secretary Hou Enzhi, Ms. Ge Ling, Lin Huiyin, and Wang Mengyu. Ms. Liang Sicheng and others."

The climax of receiving Tagore was the poet's sixty-fourth birthday on May 8, when Beijing's cultural circles celebrated his birthday at the Concorde Auditorium. The main content of the celebration hosted by Hu Shi was that Liang Qichao gave him a Chinese name "Zhu Zhendan" on behalf of everyone, and gave him a "Zhu Zhendan" seal. The second is that everyone performed his poetic drama "Chitra" in English. In the play, the protagonist, Princess Chitra, is martial and unattractive. She meets the neighboring prince Arjuna in the mountains and falls in love at first sight.Although she made many military exploits, she was not favored by the prince, so she prayed to the God of Love to give her beauty. In the end, she was able to have a beautiful face and marry the prince. But after marriage, Chitra regretted losing her original appearance. It happened that the prince also admired the fame of the princess of the neighboring country for conquering rebels (he didn't know that the princess was his wife).Chitra once again begged Venus to restore her original unbeautiful appearance, and the prince was unexpectedly pleasantly surprised. The curtain falls on the romantic happy ending.
