Chapter 1 English translator's foreword

Gandhi 马诃德夫·德赛 410Words 2018-03-16
The first edition of Gandhiji's autobiography was divided into two volumes, which were published in 1927 and 1929 respectively. The original work is in Gujarati, priced at one rupee, and has been published in five editions, selling nearly 50,000 copies. The English translation is expensive (only in hardcover), and far from being widely available to Indian readers, so a popular edition has long been needed. Now published in one volume. It should be pointed out that the English translation was serialized in the weekly "Youth India" and was revised by Gandhiji himself. Now it has undergone another careful revision, as far as the text is concerned, and by a respectable friend, a distinguished English scholar of renown, among other things. Before he took on this mission, he put forward a condition: In any case, his name must not be announced.I accept this condition.Needless to say, this increased my gratitude to him.Chapters 29 to 43 of the fifth volume were translated by my friend and colleague Pialeral while I was busy with the Bromfield Commission's survey of the land reform in Baduli in 1928-29. The work lives in Octave.

But sometimes it is also used to address relatives and friends of the same generation or the next generation, which contains intimate feelings——Annotation. Several photographs have been added to this edition (some sent by Kannu Gandhi), which I believe makes this edition even more valuable.
