The Jialing River kept rushing day and night, and the trees in the mountains behind Lizhuang flourished and withered.Sicheng and Huiyin's research and writing on "History of Chinese Architecture" is progressing tenaciously. In a war-torn country, the creativity of architects and architectural scholars can hardly be expressed in architecture, because architecture needs peace, and architecture needs money. However, Sicheng and the others found an outlet for their creativity in the study of ancient architectural art. Huiyin was still writing on the bed.She has long been looking at modern residential architecture in England and America. She saw from an architect's perspective that after the victory of the Anti-Japanese War, housing will become an important issue in people's lives.Le Corbusier, the pioneer of the modern architectural movement, said when he saw the old and dilapidated houses of the German people after the First World War: "...that is our snail shell, our house, and every day we come into contact with them. It makes us feel depressed. They are corrupt, they spoil the family everywhere...and make people's morals degenerate." Huiyin and Sicheng talked about these ideas more than once. The original intention of architecture is to provide shelter for people who face the whole world alone, and provide a place for people to recuperate. When people mention "home", the first thing they think of is their own house, the light in the window of that house, and the relatives who lean on the door of the house and look forward to it.Such a "home" gives people a sense of security and a sense of belonging. After a long period of war and displacement, people need to have such a "home", such a residence.

As an architect, it is more meaningful to let the common people have a living space suitable for their own lives than to build a hundred palaces and mansions.Lin Huiyin, who had these ideas, paid special attention to collecting experimental designs on housing when reading British and American architectural journals. The whole process of experimental construction of urban poor houses in Indiana, the housing survey in Birmingham, an industrial city in the United Kingdom, and the design of "sunshine houses" in Illinois, USA——she analyzed these materials and translated them into four articles A paper of more than 10,000 words——"Reference of Modern Residential Design".This article was published in Volume 7, Issue 2 of "China Construction Society Transactions" published by Li Zhuang.

Because the drawing task of "History of Chinese Architecture" is very heavy, the Construction Society passed the recruitment and hired a young man Luo Zhewen, and two other graduates of the Department of Architecture of Central University——Lu Sheng and Ye Zhongji also came Internship in the society. The arrival of young people filled the small courtyard of the Architecture Institute with vitality.Among several young people, Luo Zhewen was only 18 years old, and looked like a childish child. When he is free, he loves to play marbles on the ground with Liang Sicheng's son Congjie and Liu Dunzhen's son Xujie.Lu Sheng, a college student, saw it and wrote a doggerel and posted it on the longan tree: "Hit the pearls early, hit the pearls late, hit the pearls every day, and don't read." Lu Sheng's classmate Ye Zhongji was very thin and wrote a note. Post it on the tree: "Sell Laobupang half a box." Liang Zaibing saw it and thought it was funny, because she often catches a cold, so she wrote a note "Selling cold and cold" and pasted it on the tree.Under the longan tree, there is always laughter.

In such difficult years, the Academy of Architecture not only survived but also made new progress in academic research. With the support of donations from some friends, Sicheng and all his colleagues resumed the editing and publishing of the Journal of Construction Society.Under the simple conditions in Lizhuang, they did it by themselves, using water to write stone seals on paper. The text is easy to write, but the plane, three-dimensional and section ink line drawings of related buildings will take a lot of work, especially the photos, which should be replaced by hand drawings. The first and second issues of the seventh volume of the Journal of Construction Society were printed in the most difficult years of the Anti-Japanese War, and each issue printed 200 copies.Of course, this has made them try their best. When Sicheng, Huiyin and colleagues in the academy saw the bound periodicals, their joy was beyond words. These publications were sent from Lizhuang to the architectural circles all over the country and the world under the continuous artillery fire. The whole country and the world's architectural circles knew the arduous efforts of these Chinese colleagues and their latest research results.
