Chapter 31 Chapter Thirty: The Wheel of Destiny

In 1706, the seemingly peaceful world hides turbulent waves.Tibet has just experienced a fight between two tigers, and the victorious tiger is still brewing a new conspiracy while it is breathing. Although Sangye Gyatso has ended his life, the tragedy he brought to Tsangyang Gyatso has not stopped.Cangyang Gyatso and Sangye Gyatso have different pursuits. The helm of the ship is Sangye Gyatso, and Cangyang Gyatso is just a passenger who is forced to sit on the ship. But, they were on the same boat after all.The ambitious Lazang Khan will not tolerate everyone on this boat, including the living Buddha who has no intention of getting involved in this struggle.

Although Lazang Khan knows that Tsangyang Gyatso loves "love affairs", he also understands that Tsangyang Gyatso is not interested in what he wants. At the same time, he knows that the status of the sixth Dalai Lama in Lhasa should not be underestimated .The sixth Dalai Lama is the biggest leader in the hearts of Tibetans. Once he becomes interested in power, he will cause subversive damage to his own rule.Besides, his opposition to Sangye Gyatso was based on the slogan that Tsangyang Gyatso is a fake living Buddha. The relationship between him and the sixth Dalai Lama has already been damaged. The damage to this relationship at the highest level is not easy to repair, and he is not willing to repair it.

But Lhazang Khan, who is familiar with politics, also knows that the public's trust and admiration for the sixth Dalai Lama is a major obstacle to his removal.Lhazang Khan did not dare to easily touch the most sensitive nerves of the Tibetans. Due to Tsangyang Gyatso's status, he did not dare to act rashly. He must pave the way for the consolidation of his rule. First of all, he found the seventh new Diba and ordered him to strictly blockade the Potala Palace. Then he began to court local celebrities, hoping that they would become his supporters. And the work of hunting down Sangye Gyatso's cronies, subordinates, and remnants of the party has already begun early in the morning.Even if he is not from Sangye Gyatso, as long as he slightly opposes it, he will be arrested or put under surveillance.

The whole of Lhasa is filled with the shadow of terror. Many people are worried about whether something unfortunate will happen to them tomorrow.Tsangyang Gyatso on the Potala Palace is still sighing, he hasn't realized how ambitious Lhazang Khan is.All he knew was that Lhasa lived in uneasiness every day, and he hoped that this uneasiness would end as soon as possible. He didn't know that his existence was the reason why Lazang Khan made so many movements. His existence was a thorn in Lazang Khan's heart, and it was not enough to make him feel comfortable. Finally, the sixth Dalai Lama, who was imprisoned in the Golden Summit, left the Potala Palace under the escort of a group of Mongolian soldiers and entered Lhazang Khan's barracks, becoming a real prisoner. Before, no matter how many wrong things Tsangyang Gyatso did, the world would forgive him.He is still a lofty living Buddha, and no one dares to use force against him.But now, the winner of this foreign race does not regard him as a god, nor even as a bargaining chip. He is now just a stone blocking the way.So he was no longer treated with courtesy, and he was thrown into prison to await his final judgment.

Once, Tsangyang Gyatso wanted not to be the Dalai Lama in order to fight for freedom. Now that Tsangyang Gyatso is no longer being treated as a Dalai Lama, he has lost his freedom.Life is such a tragicomedy, with possibilities that we can never imagine. In the dark and simple cell, Cangyang Gyatso sat cross-legged.Even though he had understood the world, he thought he didn't care about life and death, but at this moment, he still felt desolate in his heart. How was he wrong in the whole thing? If he is a fake Dalai Lama, it is also the fault of Sangye Gyatso. He once fought fiercely but could not get rid of it.If he is not a fake Dalai Lama, this courteous treatment is the greatest disrespect to him.But no matter what, he was already a prisoner, lost his freedom and rights. He never had the ability to assert himself, never did, and still doesn't.

In the darkness, tears welled up from the corners of his eyes. Just after the execution of Sangye Gyatso, the Kangxi sent envoys arrived. The envoy was shocked by the death of Sangye Gyatso. This was originally a chess piece used by Kangxi to check and balance Lazang Khan, but now it was pulled out by Lazang Khan himself, and the current check and balance of power has become a headache. But Lhazang Khan was not worried about the envoy's accusation. He was the administrator of Tibet appointed by the emperor for generations. As the conspiracy of those in power who managed Tibet with him, his counterattack was justified.Although his behavior was a bit extreme, he believed that the emperor would not blame him for it.In his reply to the emissary, he stated his experience of being victimized and stated that Sangye Gyatso's death was not his order. At the same time, he also strongly claimed that the sixth Dalai Lama is a fake and must be abolished. He also submitted a form to Kangxi at the same time, hoping that the emperor could solve this problem.

Hearing the messenger's return, Kangxi was silent for a long time. What he cares about is not the authenticity of the sixth Dalai Lama. The authenticity of the reincarnated Living Buddha is not the main issue, the crux of the issue is who will rule Tibet. You must know that Tibet has a deep history of theocracy. Before Buddhism was introduced to Tibet, the Tubo regime had already been established, and Buddhism entered Tubo society as an object. At that time, Tubo was in the period of transition to a feudal society, and a new idea was urgently needed to consolidate its rule.Just as Emperor Wu of the Han Dynasty borrowed Confucianism to strengthen feudal rule, Buddhism became the weapon Songtsen Gampo used to rule thought. At that time, Songtsan Gampo promulgated legal provisions stipulating that subjects must believe in Buddhism. This led to the emergence of the "unity of politics and religion" system in Tibet.

Natural geographical conditions limit the development of Tibet, which makes Tibetans' awareness of the country, politics, and laws still vague.Religious belief has become the only support for their actions and spirit. This historical tradition has been inherited and continued to develop, making religion and political power intertwined, and giving religion a strong utilitarian color. In 1289, Zaba Rinqin, who served as the head of the Dansati Temple, also served as the head of ten thousand households in Pazhu after asking for the approval of the Yuan Dynasty government at that time.Unlike previous rulers who used religion to rule, this time lamas directly participated in politics. This "political and religious unity" system has lasted for more than 200 years.

This kind of history is a catalyst for regions accustomed to the unity of politics and religion.Since religion has the strongest appeal, who else is more authoritative than religious leaders?Gradually, religious leaders were pushed into the position of rulers under the wishes of others or themselves.Although the Dalai Lama does not enjoy the highest administrative power alone in Tibet, he always enjoys the highest political status. Back then, the reason why Gushri Khan was allowed to assist the fifth Dalai Lama in his rule was because he was worried that an overly strong political-religious unity would affect the stability of Tibet.Gushri Khan existed as a force to check and balance the Dalai Lama. Later, Sangye Gyatso's family became dominant, and Lhazang Khan became a force to check and balance Diba.

Kangxi has experienced the most severe power struggle, and he is well aware of the game of checks and balances. Now, the power checks and balances in Tibet have been broken. If Lhazang Khan is allowed to rule independently, his ambition will be fueled. The sixth Dalai Lama was originally the most suitable object of check and balance, but he was too weak. As a puppet of Sangye Gyatso, he lost the power to resist after losing his manipulator.Since Sangye Gyatso is dead, it is only suitable to appease Lhazang Khan, who is the dominant family. But Kangxi also knew that the enthronement of the sixth Dalai Lama was unanimously approved by the ruling and opposition parties. Therefore, regardless of his real identity and real political strength, he still has a minimum of political authority and appeal. In order to prevent him from being used by people with ulterior motives and make the situation in Tibetan areas more turbulent, we must find ways to protect the sixth Dalai Lama. His existence is an invisible check and balance for Lhazang Khan, preventing him from acting excessively.

In the end, Kangxi decided to ask Lazang Khan to send the sixth Dalai Lama to Beijing. The imperial decree arrived in Lhasa soon.Lazang Khan's behavior was identified as an act of self-defense when he was poisoned by Sangye Gyatso, and Lazang Khan was granted a canonization to appease his emotions. But at the same time, they demanded that the sixth Dalai Lama be sent to Beijing in the name of allowing him to come to Beijing for an audience. Lazang Khan, who received the order, was very happy with the reward he received. But he was very reluctant to let Tsangyang Gyatso go to Beijing. He always felt that holding the sixth Dalai Lama in his hands would make him more powerful. But he later discovered the fact that the Sixth Dalai Lama had become his prisoner, and no matter how he dealt with the Sixth Dalai Lama, he would become an enemy of Tibet. But he will rule Tibet in the future, so it is really not possible to cause too much resentment. And he also heard that a monastery wanted to fight him to the death for Tsangyang Gyatso.Once such a battle is fought, even if he can win, there will be certain difficulties in ruling. In addition, there are many ambitious people who covet Tibetan politics, and he cannot give them such an opportunity. So he began to prepare to send the sixth Dalai Lama to Beijing.Soon, eminent monks from Tibet were invited to the residence of Lazang Khan, which was an important step for Lazang Khan to cut off Tsangyang Gyatso. From a long time ago, Lhazang Khan repeatedly accused Tsangyang Gyatso of being a fake Dalai Lama. But such a statement has not been recognized by any side. The emperor's screening work also ended ambiguously.Even though the Dalai Lama was sent to Beijing this time, the emperor did not announce the decree as a fake Dalai Lama. His outcry seemed to be ignored by everyone. Now, he will clear his name of the charges. He wants all Tibetan eminent monks to come to the conclusion that the Dalai Lama is a fake.Only in this way can his rule stand firm, he can become the hero who eradicates the false Diba and the Dalai Lama, he can support the new puppets, and he can rule Tibet as the savior of Tibet. He wants to resolve this issue before sending away the sixth Dalai Lama. As a result, an unprecedented Dalai Lama trial was held in Lazang Khan's residence.Tsangyang Gyatso no longer sits in an honorable position. Even without shackles, such treatment means a trial for him.But unexpectedly, Lhazang Khan's assertion that Tsangyang Gyatso was a fake was not recognized by the eminent monks.Lamas who are politically compliant are unequivocal on the issue of the Dalai Lama. In fact, Lazang Khan has no definite evidence to prove that Tsangyang Gyatso is a fake. His only reason was Tsangyang Gyatso's romantic affair. But the eminent monks agreed that this was just because Tsangyang Gyatso was born in a family of the Red Sect, and there was nothing to blame. Some eminent monks even took out local folk songs to refute: Although accompanied by women, never slept Although accompanied by women, Never been contaminated. (Translated by Gao Ping) The first sentence of this sentence is almost the perfect imagination of the living Buddha in the world. But the latter sentence is extremely charming. "Contamination" has a very subtle meaning in Buddhism. What it refers to is not the filth of the body, but the filth of the mind. So, so what if the Living Buddha slept with a woman? As long as his mind is not contaminated with filth, it will not affect his practice. The eminent monks believe that with Tsangyang Gyatso's poems full of goodness and beauty, his heart is pure and his heart is not polluted. So what if it is contaminated? That can only show that the Living Buddha has lost his way on the path of practice, but it cannot prove his authenticity. The reincarnation system of Tibetan Buddhism pays attention to the inheritance of the innate wisdom root and the acquired practice results.Poor results in acquired practice are due to acquired life and education, and have nothing to do with innate inheritance. The unanimous rebuttals of the eminent monks made Lhazang Khan very angry. He didn't expect these eminent monks to be so righteous under his high pressure.Lazan Khan had to come up with his last weight. He said that even the emperor asked him to send Tsangyang Gyatso to Beijing, which means that the emperor did not believe his truth anymore, and Sangye Gyatso died because he poisoned himself. Whoever dares to treat him like this will surely follow in his footsteps. Lazang Khan's coercion had an effect, and the eminent monks fell silent under the high pressure. But Lhazang Khan still did not come to the conclusion that the sixth Dalai Lama is a fake. He knew that no one would ever agree with him.His only solution is to send away the sixth Dalai Lama as soon as possible to get rid of this trouble in his hands. The wheel of fate is still turning, and it arranges for Tsangyang Gyatso to leave again and again in his life.Every time he leaves, it becomes a turning point in his life. The first time he left, he left his hometown. He became a Buddhist, and then lost his relatives. The second time he left was to go to a new monastery. He gradually matured and enjoyed love. The third time to leave is to become a living Buddha. He separated from the secular life and became a lonely saint. The fourth time he left was when he went down to the world to accept love and devotion again. The fifth time he left, he became a prisoner of Lhazang Khan and lost his freedom. Now, he was leaving again, to the distant capital. What kind of turning point would that bring in his life? No one knows the intention of the wheel of fortune, but it moves forward without any scruples. Its rotation will bring Tsangyang Gyatso to the unknown confusion.
