Chapter 33 Appendix II Su Manshu Chronicle

Born in Yokohama, Japan on September 28 (the tenth day of the eighth lunar month).Originally named Jian, styled Zigu, later renamed Xuanying, also known as Shi, after becoming a monk, he took the dharma name Manshu. His father, Jaishan Su, was in business in Japan and was the comprador of the Yokohama Bandung Tea Shop at the time. Its origin is Bailigang Village, Lixi Township, Gongchangdu, Xiangshan County (now Zhongshan County), Guangdong Province. His biological mother, Kawawaka (Wakako), was born in Edo, Japan, and lived with Jaishan Su informally. After giving birth to Manshu, she left within three months.Manshu was brought up by Hehexian.

The mother-in-law, Hehexian, was born in Edo, Japan, and was Su Jiesheng's concubine. In 1877, he adopted a son, Su Zhuo. He brought Su Zhuo to China in 1877 and lived in Lixi for about three years. Because he could not bear the discrimination of the Su family, he returned to Yokohama in 1879, leaving Su Zhuo at home. Lixi. The aunt Huang's family lived in her original place at this time. Concubine Chen, Su Jiesheng's second concubine, lives in Yokohama with her at this time.
Followed by his adoptive mother, He Hexian, with great maternal love.
The aunt Huang came to Yokohama from Lixi and lived with Jaishan Su. Manshu first saw the aunt.

That year, the concubine Chen's sister Zhu Ling was born.
Manshu likes to paint, as recorded in "Chao Yin Postscript": "At the age of four, Fu Di painted lions stretching frequently, lifelike."
He was taught by his mother and began to read and write. Concubine Chen gave birth to a second sister to wish the New Year.
He returned to Bailigang Village, Lixi Township with his aunt Huang, and met his grandparents for the first time.
He entered Lixi Township School and began to study. The concubine Chen Shi gave birth to the third sister Huifang.
Still studying in the school.

The concubine, Xiao Chen (Su Jiesheng's third concubine), came to Yokohama from Guangdong to return to Su Jiesheng.
The Wanlong tea shop in Yokohama failed. In December, Jaishan Su and his concubine Chen returned to Bailigang Village in Lixi.Hehexian stayed in Japan alone until he died in an earthquake in 1923 and never came to China again.
Manshu is still studying in a rural school; his nature is close to fine arts, and he is good at painting. Su Jiesheng went to Shanghai with the eldest Chen family and all his daughters; at the same time, he sent his eldest son Su Zhuo to Yokohama to study business with his cousin Lin Beiquan (grandmother's nephew).

The concubine Da Chen gave birth to four younger sisters and died soon after.
He went to Shanghai with his aunt Su Caiping and lived with his father and concubine; however, he was abused by his concubine. At this time, I started to learn English.
Continue to study English and Chinese in Shanghai.I got to know Dr. Zhuang Xiang, a Spaniard, and under his guidance, I made great progress in my studies. In April, grandfather Su Ruiwen was seriously ill, and father Trent returned to serve the sick.On November 14th (October 20th in the lunar calendar), my grandfather died of illness, and my concubine Da Chen returned to Lixi with her daughter.Manshu is still studying in Shanghai.

In November, my concubine Xiao Chen died of illness.
At the beginning of spring, I went to Japan with my cousin Lin Ziyuan (grandmother and nephew). In Yokohama, he studied at the Datong School run by overseas Chinese. As a general student, he lived and boarded at Lin Ziyuan's house. His classmates included Feng Maolong (named Freedom), Zheng Guanyi, Zhang Wenwei, and his elder brother Su Weihan (named Mozhai, the second son of his uncle Su Desheng). I met my brother Su Zhuo in Yokohama.
He continued to study at Datong School and made rapid academic progress.
In the spring, he was promoted to the first grade of Datong School, and he also studied English.Datong School is divided into two grades, Grade A and Grade B. Grade A is awarded with two subjects of Chinese and English, Grade B is awarded with one subject of Chinese, and Manshu’s original reading is grade B.

Still studying at Datong School. In his spare time, he paints occasionally, and his brushwork is chic and elegant, which has shown his painting talent. Su Zhuo returns to the country, to Lixi.
After graduating from Datong School, he discussed with Su Weihan and Zhang Wenwei about further studies, and went to Tokyo to take the entrance examination for the Higher Normal School. At that time, his cousin Lin Ziyuan gave him a monthly subsidy of 10 yuan, which only covered the cost of board and lodging. Life was very difficult, but Manshu was able to work hard and encourage himself. In the winter of that year, Chinese students Ye Lan, Qin Yuliu, Zhang Ji and others (mostly students of Waseda University) initiated the organization of the "Youth Association" and declared that the purpose of implementing nationalism was.Feng Ziyou introduced Manshu to join the "Youth Association".

Su Zhuo came to Japan from Lixi to do business in Kobe. The concubine Da Chen gave birth to the younger sister Hui Shan.
Recommended by overseas Chinese businessmen, he was transferred to Chengcheng School (this is the preparatory school for the Japanese Army) to study the army. He changed his name to Su Shi and met his classmate Liu San (named Jiping). In March and April, the Russian army invaded the three eastern provinces of our country. Chinese students studying in Japan were extremely indignant when they heard the news. Ye Lan, Qin Yuliu and others organized the "Russia Resist Volunteer Team" for overseas students; after being disbanded by the Japanese government, they organized the "Military and National Education Association" .Manshu participated in organizational activities.Lin Ziyuan strongly opposed it, refused to listen to his advice several times, and even cut off the aid, forcing Manshu to drop out of school.

In September, Manshu returned to China on Boai Jiu.Su Weihan and Zhang Wenwei braved the rain to bid farewell to the wharf. On the ship, Manshucao sent a suicide note to Lin Ziyuan, falsely claiming that he committed suicide by throwing himself into the sea in order to escape Lin Ziyuan's intervention. In early September, he arrived in Shanghai and met with Chen Duxiu.Immediately, he went to Suzhou to teach at Wuzhong Public School; among his colleagues, Bao Tianxiao and Zhu Xinyuan were good friends.Later, he went to Shanghai to work as an interpreter for "National Daily" and worked with Chen Duxiu (Zhong Fu), He Mixuan (Mei Shi), and Zhang Xingyan (Shi Zhao).

During the period, he translated the novel "The Miserable World" (now translated title) by Xiaoer (now translated by Hugo), wrote two articles "The Female Hero Guo Erman" and "Singing Cantonese", and "Farewell to Tang Guodun with Poetry and Painting" "Two poems were published in the "National Daily". In November, the "National Daily" was shut down, and "The Miserable World" was published in the middle of the eleventh chapter, and it was also discontinued.Manshu lived with Chen Duxiu, He Mishi, and Zhang Xingyan in another rented house. One day, Manshu suddenly thought of going south, and while Chen Zhang was out, he invited He Mishi to watch the play. When he arrived in front of the theater, he said that he forgot to bring the money, so he went back to his apartment alone, took 30 yuan from Zhang Xingyan's suitcase, and left a note And flee.

Manshu left Shanghai, passed through Hunan, "entered Mount Heng, climbed Zhurong Peak, and looked down at Tingliu tomorrow" (according to Manshu's "Painting Postscript"); and then went to Hong Kong. After arriving in Hong Kong, he visited Chen Shaobai with a letter of introduction written by Feng Ziyou in Japan. At this time, Chen Shaobai was the president of "China Daily", so he stayed at the agency. Not long after living here, Manshu felt depressed because of the unspeakable threat of his life experience, and decided to become a monk.Chen Shaobai knew that he was withdrawn and irreversible, so he donated dozens of gold as money.Manshu then went to Huizhou to vote in a broken temple to receive precepts, and took the dharma name "Manshu".
In February, because the dilapidated temple had only one old monk abbot, and there was no food for the lodging, and he relied on alms for a living, Manshu couldn't bear such a difficult life, so he left Huizhou and returned to Hong Kong.According to Lu Danlin's "Records of Su Manshu's Leaving Home and Wanting to Kill Kang Youwei": "One day, (Manshu) took his teacher to another place, and then stole his deceased senior brother's certificate and his teacher's only remaining two corners to escape. Walk to the provincial capital, and take the ferry to Hong Kong, Yinyang Erjiao is only enough to cover the boat fare, and I have not eaten for two days on the way.” The brother’s teaching name is Bojing, and his layman was originally a son of Zhao in Shixing County, Nanxiong Prefecture.Since then, Manshu sometimes used "Bo Jing" as his Dharma name. During his stay in Hong Kong, he was met by a fellow villager Jian Shichang by chance and checked out his address.Jane returns to Lixi and informs her father Jaishan Su of the situation. At this time, Jaishan Su was seriously ill, and he asked Jane to go to Hong Kong to urge Manshu to return home.Manshu excused himself and refused to return. On March 15th (the 29th day of the first lunar month), Su Jie died of illness, and Manshu did not go to the funeral. In fact, because Jaishan Su was insulated from Hehexian, Manshu deeply hated him. In late March, I went to Shanghai to visit Ye Lan, an old friend of the "Youth Association", at the "National Society".At this time, Manshu decided to travel south, and got Dr. Zhuang Xiang's help for travel expenses. Before spring, he traveled to Luoluo and Xizhen. When I arrived at Luoluo, I learned Sanskrit and studied Buddhist scriptures from the elder Qiao Ximo; and when I went to the birthplace of the Buddha, I looked at the monument where King Asoka commended the birthplace of the Buddha. In July, he returned to China and went to Changsha to visit Qin Yuliu, an old friend who had studied in Japan. At this time, Qin served as the supervisor of the teaching affairs of Hunan Industry School, and also taught the history of Mingde School and Jingzheng School. Therefore, Manshu was also hired as a teacher in the industrial school. In September, the "Huaxing Society" failed to attempt an uprising in Changsha.Although Manshu did not participate, he had close contacts with the main figures Huang Keqiang, Yang Xingxun, Yang Dusheng, Qin Yuliu, Zhang Puquan, etc., because Huang Keqiang and others were colleagues of the Industry School.
In the first half of the year, he was still teaching in Changsha Industrial School.Went to Shanghai during the summer vacation, and met Qin Yuliu again (last year, he fled to Shanghai due to the failure of the "Huaxinghui" uprising). After autumn, I visited the West Lake in Hangzhou and sent paintings to Chen Duxiu. In the second half of the year, in Nanjing, he taught at Junjun Primary School, taught English, and worked with Liu San.At this time, he got acquainted with Zhao Sheng (Bo Xian).According to Manshu's "Swallow's Niche Essay": "When Yu taught Jiangnan Army Primary School, Boxian was the third standard of the new army. He first met him. Yu Tan was a general. Every time he passed by, he ordered soldiers to bring pots to buy. Salted duck yellow wine. Bo Xian is more than a drinker, and Yu Yixiong is a eater. When he is drunk, he sings with his sword under the wind blowing willows, and gallops between dragons, pans and tigers. It is a joy.” Yichang and Liu San Traveling and painting, it is recorded in Manshu's "Painting Postscript": "Yisi and Ji Ping climbed Jiming Temple, and watched the lake behind Taicheng City. The painting shows Ji Ping." It is also recorded: "Yisi and Ji Ping Parallel to Mo Mausoleum, Jinfeng came out of plain silk to draw a painting, but Jinfeng was suitable for it before it was completed. Afterwards, crossing the Xiangshui River, and sending this post, I would rather send Yin Hongqiao to the lower ear of the stone city." From here, it can be seen that Manshu also set foot in the flowers. .
On the 25th day of the first lunar month (New Year's Day in the lunar calendar), I passed through Nanjing Xiaguan with Liu Shipei (Uncle Shen) and painted a painting ("Painting Postscript" records: "On New Year's Day in Bingwu, I crossed Maguan with Uncle Shen for painting." According to "Maguan" , not the "Maguan" in Japan, Manshu was still in Nanjing at that time, and may refer to the Shimonoseki Pass in Beijing). In the same year, Bo Luohan, an Indian friend, returned home and painted "Jianggan Xiao Temple Picture" as a farewell (according to Bingwu's "Painting Postscript"). At the beginning of spring, he went to Changsha to teach in Mingde Academy, teaching painting; he lived in Yongfu Temple. Xia, at the invitation of Liu Shipei, went to Wuhu to teach in Wanjiang Middle School, and worked with Deng Chunhou. During the summer vacation, he traveled east with Chen Duxiu to Japan to find his adoptive mother, Hehexian, but they never met. (According to the "Preface to the Manshu Painting Book" written by Kawaishi the following year: "(My son) went to Xiashi to get the scroll sheet and come to the Eastern Province for the rest of the country. It is suitable for the rest of the country to live in the countryside. I will never meet you.") After the summer vacation, I returned from Japan and still went to China. Teaching at Wuhu Wanjiang Middle School. However, due to the turmoil in the school, he left Wuhu with Tao Huanqing and Gong Wei in the late August of the lunar calendar, and went to Shanghai to become a monk in Liuyun Temple. On the fourth day of the ninth month of the lunar calendar, I went to Hangzhou again to visit the West Lake.On the ninth day of the lunar new year, I returned to Shanghai and lived in the Patriotic Women's School. I happened to find a portrait of Louise Mesor hand-painted by the British Zuli among the piles of old papers. In October of the lunar calendar, he moved to the summer apartment at No. 4 Dingjili, Baxianqiao. This is actually the Jiangsu branch of the Chinese League. On the 23rd day of the 11th lunar month, I left Shanghai and traveled to Wenzhou.Soon, return to Shanghai. (The above whereabouts can be found in Manshu Bingwu Year "And Liu Sanshu")

Manshu also published his paintings in the supplementary issue of "Minbao" "Tianchao": "Fox Hunting", "Yue'e King Visiting Cuiwei Pavilion in Chizhou", "Xu Zhongshan King Mochou Lake Rafting", "Chen Yuanxiao Inscribed Strange Stone Wall picture". In the spring of that year, Lu Xun went to Japan to organize the "New Life" magazine, and Manshu was invited as one of the organizers. However, "New Life" did not receive active support from colleagues, and it died before it came out. In June, Manshu moved to the "Tianyi Bao" office in Jiujian Town, Xiaoshichuan District, and lived with Liu Shipei and He Zhen.He has successively published his paintings "Portrait of Nuwa", "Picture of Gushan", "Picture of Autumn Thoughts in Deng Taimiao Autonomous Prefecture", "Picture of Xiao Temple in Jianggan", "Picture of Crescent Moon in Qing Autumn" and other paintings in the supplementary period of "Tianyi Bao". At this time, female disciple He Zhen compiled "Manshu Painting Book", with He Heshi as the preface and Zhang Taiyan as the postscript. It was originally planned to be printed at the same time as "Sanskrit Dictionary", but failed. I have seen Tian Zhong in a hundred years, and Ningxin is wrapped in brocade." On December 10th (the sixth day of November in the lunar calendar), I returned to Dongdu and visited my old friend Zhang Wenwei in a dormitory in Kanda District, Tokyo. On October 7th (September 13th in the lunar calendar), at the appointment of Layman Yang Renshan, he went to Nanjing to teach at the "Yuanjingshe" opened by Yang Renshan to train monks and study Buddhism, and lectured on Sanskrit. The lecturer on Buddhist scriptures is Yang Renshan, and the lecturer on Chinese is Li Xiaotun. "Yujingshe" recruited monks from the great temples in Zhenjiang and Yangzhou to teach Sanskrit. After two or three years of study, they were sent to study in Japan and India to further study the Sanskrit.Manshu admired Yang Renshan very much, and thought: "Today, I would like to protect the remaining light of my Buddha. If you are like the sunset, you are only a benevolent old man." Etc. Bodhidharma wrote Ertong to Yang Renshan, and was commissioned to translate it into Chinese. During the period, Layman Fran, a professor of Bailing University, visited to talk about the translation and asked to buy "Fayuan Zhulin". (See Manshu's "Preface to Selected Poems of Byron". However, the end of the article was mistakenly recorded as "the thirty-second year of Guangxu", and "Yujingshe" had not yet been opened at this time.) In November, between Shanghai and Nanjing. When Liu Shipei and his wife returned to Shanghai, they still communicated with him. On December 10th (November 17th in the lunar calendar), lying ill in the "Yuanjingshe", Layman Yang Renshan told Qinhuai Ma Xianglan about the fruit.
