Home Categories Biographical memories Talking about Great Literati in the Republic of China: Those Masters of Chinese Studies
Liang Qichao said: "Kang Youwei was an early master, and his views were unchanging; but Liang Qichao was constantly changing, and he did not hesitate to think that today's me is not yesterday's me." Zhou Shanpei said: "The friend in my life who can be spoken most is Ren Gong. This is something I will never forget." In terms of politics and thought, Liang Qichao is changeable. He commented on himself: "Conservatism and aggressiveness are often at war in the chest, and they are born out of emotion, and what they insist on is often contradictory." It’s hard for me in the past to criticize this a lot, and the effect of his words is often lost, which is due to the weakness of nature.”

In the book "Introduction to Qing Dynasty Academics", Liang Qichao was honest and self-blame to himself. He said: "Qichao's research is broad and barren, and every time he learns a little bit about it, he will add it to the list; so his works are so vague. Affecting general talks, even purely wrong; and self-discovery and self-correction, it is already inconsistent. In all fairness, the ideological circle was closed and sluggish twenty years ago, it is not the use of such reckless and sloppy methods. You can't break new ground by breaking the mountain; from this point of view, Liang Qichao can be regarded as Chen She in the new ideological circle. Although, the people of the country are not only blaming Qichao for this, but with his own courage and his thirty-year history. The accumulated qualifications should really be the basis for our new ideological circle to create a scale for the founding of the country; if this person persists in this way for a long time, it will be considered a great loss in the history of Chinese culture."

Liang Qichao has a strong memorization ability and a strong thirst for knowledge, but he is greedy for more things, pursues quick success, and lacks perseverance.Zhou Shanpei advised him on this problem, and Liang also knew himself. When he wrote a poem for his eldest daughter Liang Sishun's "Diary of the Yiheng Museum", he reflected: "I have learned a lot about my illness and love it. It is shallow and gross. Especially when I am sick There is no permanence, and there is gain and loss. All things can follow me, and there is no such thing as me.” Liu Haisu asked Liang Qichao: "Why do you know so much?" After thinking for a moment, Liang replied earnestly: "This is not a strength, so don't envy me. I have two poems: 'I learn from illnesses and love to be broad, but I use them shallowly. And it’s messy.” A fisherman casts a hundred nets at the same time, and it’s impossible to catch big fish. You need to study deeply. You should do everything you can to run a fine arts college and create a group of talents; A good score is not enough, and one needs to be proficient and diligent. The above two things must be devoted to the whole life, and the stalls of academic research should not be too large. Because life is limited, knowledge is infinite. It is rare to do one thing well; if the strength is scattered, nothing will be accomplished."

Liang Qichao learned English from He Huizhen for several months in Honolulu. He felt that he had acquired the true meaning of English, so he wrote "English-Chinese Reading Method", saying: "Anyone who reads this book can translate English books within a few months." One day, Wang Chonghui came to visit. After reading the book, Wang solemnly told Liang: "You are selling books, not studying English."Wang told him that the content and structure of the book were wrong. After hearing this, Liang blushed, took the book from Wang, tore it in half, and threw it out the window.Since then, this book has never been mentioned again.

After Xia Zengyou (Sui Qing) met Liang Qichao, they met almost every day to discuss knowledge, and whenever they met, arguments would inevitably arise.Liang said: "Nine out of ten times I have been succumbed to by Sui Qing, and we can always get an agreement." Once, a student Huang Boyi asked Liang Qichao why he stopped talking about politics. Liang said: "I have gone through several risks in politics, and now I am determined to study behind closed doors and not ask about politics. Can't you understand?" Judging from his reserved face, Liang Qichao has obviously lost his youth when he uttered the Zhuang saying "life and death are just like opening and closing eyes, misfortune and fortune are like repeated hands".
