Home Categories Biographical memories Talking about Great Literati in the Republic of China: Those Masters of Chinese Studies
Speaking of Zhang Taiyan's students, this list includes: Lu Xun, Xu Shoushang, Zhou Zuoren, Qian Xuantong, Shen Jianshi, Ma Youyu, Zhu Xizu, Wu Chengshi, Huang Kan, Wang Dong, Cao Juren, Liu Wendian... When Zhang Taiyan was in Japan, he gave lectures on Chinese studies for foreign students, and taught "Shuowen", "Chu Ci", "Erya" and so on.After that, a separate class was set up for Zhou Shuren, Zhou Zuoren, Zhu Xizu, Qian Xuantong and others to teach separately. Huang Shaolan (who was once cheated into marriage by Huang Kan) wrote "The Three Body Stone Classic", which was appreciated by Zhang Taiyan and became the only female disciple of Zhangmen.

In 1934, Zhang Taiyan moved from Shanghai to Suzhou and founded the Zhang's Chinese Studies Seminar. In March of the following year, Chiang Kai-shek sent Ding Weifen (Ding Chen) to condolences, and sent tens of thousands of gold for Zhang's treatment. Zhang will transfer this money to Zhang's Chinese studies seminar funds. After 1935, Zhang Taiyan held a seminar on Chinese studies in Suzhou, which was actually a private school. The school was first established in Zhangzhai, but because of the increasing number of students, it had to buy land and build houses for classrooms and student dormitories.Zhang Taiyan was the lecturer, and several lecturers were hired, and Zhang's wife, Tang Guoli, served as the dean of the school. The school system is 2 years, divided into 4 periods, and the courses are arranged in a planned way.According to the different levels of students, the teaching is divided into classes, there are basic classes similar to preparatory courses, and there are also "graduate students".Later, the school also opened an affiliated middle school.Zhang Zhaojun recalled that there were signboards of Zhang’s Chinese Studies Seminar and Zhi Yan magazine hanging on the gate of the school. There was no gatehouse and free entry and exit. There was an atmosphere of free and active thinking. Students came from all over the country, the youngest was 18 years old. The oldest is 73 years old, and there are as many as 100 people living in the school.Zhang Taiyan attached great importance to lectures, and he still insisted on attending classes in spite of illness before he died. He said: "You don't have to eat, but you still have to teach books."

Zhou Zuoren once recalled the scene when Zhang Taiyan gave a lecture in the research institute of Peking University: "Guang Lun Yu Pian Zhi" written by Tai Yan was the lecturer of that day. Xuan Tong is the translator, and it is quite interesting to re-translate the Mandarin. Zhang Taiyan gave lectures with great momentum. He is famous all over the world, and there are many people who come to listen to the lecture, so the organizer simply arranged a large class to meet the needs of the audience.Every time Zhang came to class, he was accompanied by five or six disciples, including Ma Youyu and Qian Xuantong, all of whom were heroes of the moment and were well-known.Zhang Guoyu is not good, so Liu Bannong is the translator, Qian Xuantong writes on the blackboard, and Ma Youyu pours tea. It is an unprecedented event. When Zhang Taiyan gave a lecture, he said, "It's your luck that you come to listen to my lecture, and of course it's also my luck."

Zhang Zhongxing recalled Zhang Taiyan’s speech in the wind and rain playground of Peking University: the old man had white hair and wore a long silk gown, surrounded by five or six disciples including Ma Youyu, Qian Xuantong, and Wu Jianzhai, on the podium.Mr. Taiyan is not tall, but his eyes are bright, and he starts talking when he looks down.He speaks the native dialect of Yuhang, Zhejiang. It is estimated that most people do not understand, and Liu Bannong is responsible for the translation; often quotes from the scriptures, and Qian Xuantong writes them on the blackboard behind with chalk. He doesn't change his old temper when he speaks, he is humorous and scolds at the same time.

Zhou Zumo recalled that when he was in elementary school, he saw Liang Qichao and Zhang Taiyan give lectures in the wind and rain playground of Beijing Higher Normal School.Mr. Liang talked about politics, and many people listened to him; Mr. Zhang talked about academics in the Qing Dynasty, but few people listened. At that time, Zhang Taiyan had gray hair and white eyes. He was sitting on a bench with a desk in front of him. He spoke a southern dialect, which he could barely understand.Behind him are two gentlemen writing on the blackboard. It was only when Zhou Zumo went to college that he recalled who wrote the writing on the blackboard. The short and fat one is Qian Xuantong, and the tall and thin one is Ma Yuzao.

Zhang Taiyan's Yuhang accent is very heavy, and because of nasal polyps, his speech is slurred, with a very strong nasal sound, and speeches and lectures need translation. In 1922, Zhang Taiyan gave a series of lectures on Sinology in Shanghai. According to the report of "Shen Bao" at that time, the audience quickly rose from three to four hundred to nearly one thousand, and then fell back to seven or eighty.Cao Juren recorded that the ten series of lectures were held every Saturday afternoon. The first time the audience was a thousand, the second time it was less than a hundred, and the least was only twenty or thirty. people. At first everyone came here because of the famous name, but due to the lack of basic understanding of Zhang's knowledge, and "the Yuhang dialect of Master Zhang is really difficult to understand", the number of listeners dropped sharply.

In 1923, Zhang Taiyan gave a lecture on "Methods of Governing Historiography" at the summer school of Southeast University. Zhang spoke Yuhang dialect, which most of the students could not understand, so he had to be translated by Liu Yizheng present. Therefore, "Mr. Lectures are like Chinese translators, but his voice is like a bell, methodical, and eloquent."
