Zhang Taiyan was "independent and unique" all his life, and earned countless titles: "Great man of modern nationalism", "Leader of Chinese studies", "Great man of the Republic of China", "Great writer advocating revolution", "Great man of revolutionaries", "New China "Lu Sao (Suo)", "Academic Master", "Crazy Student", "Celebrity", "Heretic", "Opposition Leader", "Student", "Reactionary", "Crazy", "Crazy Zhang" .But the two big names "Crazy" and "Crazy Zhang" accompanied him the longest in his life!

Zhang Taiyan suffers from epilepsy. In 1883, sixteen-year-old Zhang Taiyan took part in the county examination, but suffered a sudden seizure of epilepsy and failed the examination. From then on, he gave up the imperial examination and dabbled extensively in a subset of classics and history.Feng Ziyou also recorded: "Taiyan suffered from epilepsy for a long time, and once he returned to his apartment from outside, he fainted and fell to the ground as soon as he entered the house. I went to the doctor for diagnosis and treatment, and he recovered in one day." This may be why he was called "the madman." "One of the reasons.

After the Boxer Incident, Zhang Zhidong set up Zhengxue Journal in Hubei and hired Zhang Taiyan as the chief editor of the newspaper. When the first issue of "Chu Xuebao" was published, Zhang Taiyan actually wrote a 60,000-word essay on "Dispelling Manchuria" and submitted it to Liang Dingfen, the general office of the newspaper, for review. After Liang read it, he exclaimed: "Rebellion, rebellion! Behead, behead!" Then he galloped in a sedan chair to the Governor's Yamen, reported to Zhang Zhidong, and wanted to arrest Zhang Taiyan and punish him according to the law.Fortunately, Wang Renjun, the assistant of "Zhengxue Journal", said to Zhang Zhidong: "Zhang Taiyan is a madman, and he can leave the country immediately." But Liang Dingfen did not let him go, and ordered four bearers to throw Zhang on the ground. On the ground, he was beaten violently with a sedan stick.Later, every time Zhang Taiyan argued with others, laughed and cursed, the other party said "Call Liang Dingfen", Zhang Taiyan smiled and said nothing.

After the "Su Bao" incident, the governor of Jiangsu arrested Zhang Taiyan and others overnight, and everyone fled. Only Zhang Taiyan refused to listen to the advice and insisted on sitting in the Patriotic Society, so he was arrested.Zhang Taiyan wrote a letter to Zou Rong, who had escaped, to defend together. Zou didn't want to let his elder brother bear the responsibility alone, so he resolutely took the initiative to go to prison and shared weal and woe with Zhang.Zhang and Zou confessed to the revolutionary words and deeds.Because of his frail health, Zou died in prison.Three years later, when Zhang Taiyan was released from prison, he specially hung a portrait of Zou Rong on the high wall of the house, and placed a horizontal board in front of it, with an incense burner on it.

In March 1907, Zhang Taiyan wrote "The Biography of Zou Rong", in which Wu Zhihui was mentioned in many places. In his book, he claimed that Wu Zhihui "provided advice" and sold his friends to the enemy to protect himself. After Wu fled to Paris, he was furious after reading "The Biography of Zou Rong", thinking that Zhang was using the name of commemorating Zou Rong to confound black and white and vent his personal grievances against him.So Wu wrote to Zhang Taiyan, asking Zhang to explain who said he betrayed his friend.Zhang Taiyan immediately replied with an open letter, beginning by saying: "Your Zhihui: Wu Tiao, Wu Fei, Wu Jingheng, all of you!" Zhang meant, no matter how many names Wu Zhihui has, you are consistent in character, and you are still the same A "single step" despised by "servants".After Wu saw this open letter, he wrote a rhetorical question, and Zhang answered it again in July of the same year. , don't make it hard to carbuncle, be good at mending but dandy, don't let it wear later" and other cursing language.

Zhang Taiyan did not mind being called a "lunatic". His student Xu Shoushang recalled that when Zhang Taiyan was in Japan, he gave such a speech at the welcome banquet of the overseas student community and the League: "...everything that is very strange is not a mental patient. , must not be able to think, can think but dare not speak, after speaking, when encountering difficulties and hardships, he is not a neurotic, and must not be stubborn and go his own way. Therefore, since ancient times, there have been people who have learned a lot and achieved great careers. You have to be insane to be able to do it... For this reason, brother admits that he is insane, and I hope that all comrades have a little or two of insanity....Recently there are rumors: So-and-so is also insane, brothers see Come on, don’t be afraid of being insane, I’m just afraid that when the riches and fortunes appear in front of you, the insanity will be cured immediately. Forty million people!"

After Zhang Taiyan had a dispute with Sun Yat-sen over collecting black money from the Japanese, Huang Xing once persuaded Sun Yat-sen in a letter: "My brother should discuss with Jingwei and others, and there is no need to worry about it. In the future, we will only publish it in "Minbao" If you are a crazy person, you can't believe what a madman is talking about." After the success of the Revolution of 1911, some of Zhang Taiyan's suggestions could not be adopted by the authorities, so he scolded everyone: Comrades in the original revolutionary camp such as Sun Yat-sen, Huang Xing, Song Jiaoren, etc., upstarts in the Republic of China Tang Shaoyi, Zhao Bingjun, Liang Shiyi, Duan Qirui, etc., royalists such as Kang Youwei, Zhang Jian, Tang Hualong, Tan Yankai, etc... In the early years of the Republic of China, Zhang Taiyan's swearing articles often appeared in newspapers, with harsh words and no mercy.Being scolded by Zhang a lot, everyone is used to it, ignore it, and just laugh it off as "Crazy Zhang".

After the Revolution of 1911, Zhang Taiyan was entrusted by Sun Yat-sen to Hubei to meet Li Yuanhong. As soon as Zhang arrived in Hubei, he was warmly welcomed by Li, which doubled Zhang's affection for Li. He said to everyone, "The president of the Republic of China must be the public!" For a while, everyone knew Zhang's words. After Wang Yitang heard about it, he immediately informed Yuan Shikai, and said: "Crazy Zhang's remarks and the pen in his hand are still appealing, so we have to win over them." Yuan Shikai was also afraid of the pen in Zhang's hand, so he immediately called Zhang Taiyan to Beijing, and Award him a medal.

Lu Xun recalled Naishi Zhang Taiyan’s article: “…Since he is a lunatic, his remarks are of course lunatics, and they are of no value. But every time he makes a speech, it is still published in their newspaper, but the title is special, saying: "Crazy Zhang went crazy." Once, he scolded their opposition party. What should we do? When it was published in the newspaper the next day, the headline was: "Crazy Zhang is not crazy"! " Wang Zhongluo, a disciple of Zhang Taiyan, once recalled: "The teacher is a scholar, but he falls asleep when he talks about academics. The teacher is not good at politics, but when he talks about politics, his eyebrows are beaming."

In December 1913, Zhang Taiyan, who was newly married, went north to seek Yuan Shikai to settle accounts, and wanted to "save a ray of light for Zhongxia" and "save this crisis".Regarding Zhang's trip, Lu Xun once wrote in his reminiscence article: "Use the large medal as a fan pendant to make a big fuss in the presidential palace."According to the "Declaration" on January 14, 1914: Zhang Taiyan held a round fan with a medal attached to it, stepped on official boots, and yelled to see the president. Make a fuss."According to official records, Zhang Taiyan not only cursed at Yuan Shikai, but also smashed furniture and objects.Yuan Shikai put Zhang Taiyan under house arrest on the grounds that Zhang was insane.

According to legend, Yuan Shikai wanted to kill Zhang Taiyan very much at one time, but he was afraid of the dissatisfaction of the people, so he laughed at himself and said: "Zhang Taiyan is a lunatic, why should I care about him?" After Yuan Shikai's death, Zhang Taiyan was released and went south. Zhao Fan (known as the "sick man"), a famous scholar in Yunnan, once gave him a poem of Qijue: Zhang Taiyan was very proud of his poems, and he often read them and listened to them in his later years. Zhang Taiyan was imprisoned by Yuan Shikai for more than two years. He was extremely sad and indignant. He often wrote the three characters "Yuan Shikai" and slapped them with the palm of his hand. He also wrote the two characters "Dead Ear" as a gift to others. In 1915, he wrote the five characters "Zulong will die next year". In the following year, Yuan Shikai died suddenly and Zhang Shi was free. Zhang Taiyan always speaks harshly to politicians and army sticks who don't like him.Once, the governor of a certain province came to visit Zhang and offered a great gift, but the three sentences were not correct, so Zhang Taiyan hit the ground with his staff, scolded him as "the eagle dog of the Beiyang warlord", and threw the teacup viciously at him. This person. The governor was so frightened that he ran away with his head in his arms.
