Wang Guowei and Luo Zhenyu are from the same hometown in Zhejiang. The two are not only sons and daughters, but Luo Zhenyu is a teacher and a close friend to Wang Guowei. In 1896, Luo Zhenyu founded the Agricultural Society in Shanghai and set up the Agricultural Newspaper Office to edit and publish the "Agricultural Journal". It was necessary to hire translators to introduce European, American and Japanese agricultural books and agricultural books to China. In June, the East Literature Society was established in Mayfly, Xinma Road, Shanghai with private capital. According to Luo Zhenyu's grandson Liu Huisun, on the second day of the first lunar month of the 1898 year, Luo went to the "Current Affairs" building to pay New Year's greetings to the owner Wang Kangnian. After entering the door, there was no one there. Put a bag of peanuts, open a book for self-discipline, I don't think it's a bit strange. When I entered the room, I found that the person was reading "Wen Xuan · Liangdu Fu" and was pouring Shaoxing wine.Feeling strange, and then asked, the man got up and gave up his seat. It turned out to be Wang Jing'an (Wang Guowei's name is Jing'an), a proofreader of "Current Affairs".Then I saw that there were quatrains on the fan that he wrote for the students in the same house, the last sentence of which was "A thousand years of grandeur, do you know, Mo Hai looks at the Qin Dynasty from the west", which is "big difference", and I think he is really extraordinary Therefore, he persuaded him to join the East Literature Society, and said that Wang has a reputation as a scholar, so he can directly enter the normal class. He also said that, as the supervisor of a public school, he would like to help.Wang said: "How can I make a living?" Luo Nai asked about the monthly salary of 30 yuan, and then said: "You can go to study, I will give you a name in the "Journal of Agricultural Sciences", and you can write articles in your free time. The monthly salary is 40 yuan. Yuan, then the family and personal life can be maintained.” Wang then entered the East Literature Society to study. It was Wang Guowei who was only 22 years old. It was a rare opportunity for him to become a university student and step into the threshold of the East Literature Society.Wang Guowei was very grateful. He once wrote a poem using "carpenter stone" as a metaphor for Luo Zhenyu: "Carpenter stone is ignored, which means it is different from ordinary materials."

In November 1911, Luo and Wang went eastward together.Previously, Wang Guowei's interest was originally in Western philosophy, but at this time he resolutely turned to Chinese studies.According to Liu Huisun's recollection, this was also the result of Luo Zhenyu's persuasion to Wang Guowei. From the beginning of their acquaintance, most of Wang Guowei's important activities are almost closely related to Luo Zhenyu.Studying in Japan was sponsored by Luo Shi; giving lectures at Nantong Normal University was recommended by Luo Shi; entering Beijing as an official of the late Qing Academy was led by Luo Shi; even Wang Guowei first studied Western learning, and later turned to dictatorship of Chinese studies, it was also persuaded by Luo Zhenyu Gong... Xu Zhongshu's "Biography of Mr. Wang Jing'an" records: "In the Battle of 1911, Luo Shi fled to the east, and Mr. also took his family with him and lived in Xijing, Japan. The demise of Luo Shi's painful clean house is especially envied by Western theory. He wanted to assume the responsibility of preserving the old culture, and persuaded Mr. to rule over Chinese studies. Mr. was so moved that he took the previously printed "Jing'an Anthology" and burned it."

Luo Zhenyu is not as knowledgeable as Wang Guowei, but he is good at dancing in other aspects. He has been the teacher of the last emperor, participated in important political activities, and has strong business skills... He is kind to Wang Guowei, but he also made Wang Guowei do a lot matter.Wang Guowei, on the other hand, has a melancholy and pessimistic personality, immerses himself in academics, and does not care about utilitarianism. He is a typical scholar's temperament. People call him "honest as a ham".It is said that many of Luo Zhenyu's important academic achievements were actually Wang Guowei's. Some people said that Luo Zhenyu's "Yinxu Book Deed Research and Interpretation" plagiarized Wang Guowei's research results; some people said that Wang Guowei threw himself into the water because Luo Zhenyu forced him...

In any case, before the death of Wang Guowei's eldest son, the relationship between Wang Guowei and Luo Zhenyu had been very good. When Luo Zhenyu married her daughter to Wang Guowei's eldest son, the two naturally became closer and closer, like a family. Wang Guowei's eldest son, Qianming, is unwilling to rely on his parents and prefers to live an independent life. In September 1919, shortly after he married Luo Zhenyu's third daughter, Xiaochun, he studied at the Yucai Public School run by the Bureau of the Ministry of Industry in Shanghai, and was introduced by the school to enter the customs. In the following year, he was transferred to Tianjin Customs and lived in the home of his father-in-law in Jialeli.Soon, Customs' new apartment building was completed.Luo Shi only got married when he was a young couple, and he has no life experience. I advise him not to rush to start a small family.Wang Guowei also wrote to him, saying that you have just entered the customs and your salary is limited. You should still live in your father-in-law's house, which can save money and take care of each other. He asked him to follow Luo's advice. But Wang Qianming insisted on moving out of Luo Zhai, moved into an apartment, and lived an independent small family life.

At the end of May 1925, Qianming was transferred to Shanghai Customs. On September 26 of the following year, he died of illness in Shanghai at the age of 27.The widow, Xiaochun, was only 24 years old at the time. She had been married to Qianming for eight years and had two daughters. Wang Guowei loved her very much.Unfortunately, both precious granddaughters died in 1924. Wang Guowei returned to Beijing by car from Shanghai on October 15 after taking care of Qianming's funeral.During the period, they also entrusted someone to purchase a cemetery for Qianming in Haining. In the process of handling Qianming's funeral, some "misunderstandings" occurred, which not only intensified the so-called family conflicts between mother-in-law and daughter-in-law, but also caused Luo and Wang's family to file a lawsuit over the collection and storage of Qianming's legacy!

The reason is that Luo Zhenyu once accused her daughter of being "paranoid" on the issue of Qianming's medical treatment, so Wang Guowei also criticized the eldest daughter-in-law as "unreasonable" as an elder on the issue of Qianming's legacy, and asked Luo Shiyu to explain it to her. "valid reason".Unexpectedly, Luo Zhenyu not only did not "memorize", but also protected him.The pen-and-ink lawsuit intensified, and finally led to the breakup of Luo and Wang's "30-year golden-stone friendship"! According to the signing time of Luo and Wang's correspondence during this period, there is roughly one letter every three days, and one round trip every six days. It lasted 20 days.Judging from the tone of the letter, Wang Guowei has always cherished the old friendship, while Luo Shi was aggressive until the last letter, saying that he sent the letter "not what I wanted", which seemed to reveal a little regret, but still accused Wang Guowei "The letter is serious."

Luo Zhenyu's nephew Luo Shouxun said in his later years: My uncle (Luo Zhenyu) was quick-tempered and had a big temper, and he was not calm in dealing with others. The disharmony between the two parents in their later years has a lot to do with his "temper".But the real reason is that Luo Zhenyu believes that Wang Guowei's letter claiming that "I am all old" is not from a daughter to a father, and that he is not criticizing him as a father, especially in the letter very solemnly speaking of "contempt for other people's personality" , In fact, he criticized his father and daughter for violating the "teaching of saints".

According to Luo Zhenyu's eldest grandson, Luo Jizu, who was 14 or 15 years old at the time, according to him, after marriage, his aunt (namely Luo Xiaochun) had a bad relationship with Qianming's stepmother, Mrs. Pan, and was instigated by servants in the middle, resulting in "cold feelings" between mother-in-law and daughter-in-law. .When Qianming died of illness, Wang Guowei and his wife went to Shanghai to hold the funeral; Luo Shi, who was "worried about her daughter", also went to Shanghai to visit, and the two parents had a dispute because of this, and the matter became more and more tense. He recounted the dispute between Luo and Wang in this way: Mrs. Pan occasionally mishandled the aftermath, the aunt complained to the grandfather, and the grandfather blamed Mr. Wang for listening to the woman's words, and brought his aunt home in a rage. ...The 30-year-old relationship suddenly broke down. The reason is that my grandfather has a quick temper and is usually arbitrary in family affairs, while Mr. Wang has the opposite personality. ...The matter became stagnant, and no one turned it around, so that even though Beijing and Tianjin were close to each other, they avoided each other until Mr. Wang passed away.

However, this is all due to the representations of Roche's descendants. On the surface, "the king of Luo turned against each other" appeared to be caused by Qian Ming's "legacy" problem, but it was not a "temporary misunderstanding", but a long-standing dissatisfaction in his heart. Before that, there were at least two things that worried Luo Shi. One is that in May 1923, not long after Wang Guowei entered the small imperial court, he wrote to Luo Shi that his "Guantang Jilin" had been bound in Shanghai, and he planned to "present" the hard-printed copy to Boyi.Luo also took advantage of this time to send his own "Yin Xu Shu Qi Qi Qian Qian Bian" and "Cao Shi" from Tianjin to Beijing, and asked Wang Guoweituo Bookstore to make a yellow satin cover for the "report".This made Wang Guowei, who had just entered the "South Study Room", feel quite embarrassed.Because he knew that Luo Zhenyu had conflicts with Zheng Xiaoxu and others in the small court, he wrote back and said: In order to avoid suspicion, he planned to wait "a few months later".Luo was very angry, and immediately wrote back, asking Wang not to make the book cover, but to hand over the original book to "Xiejin".

The other is that when Qian Ming was working at Tianjin Customs, the young couple lived temporarily in Luo Zhai, so Wang Guowei often went to Tianjin to visit, and the topic of the two parents' family meetings was Pu Yi and the personnel disputes in the small court.Luo Shi and Sheng Yun, who recommended the king to enter the "South Study Room", regarded themselves as "old school", and wanted to jointly submit a memorial to participate in the impeachment of the "new school" headed by Zheng Xiaoxu, and let Wang Dai present it.After Wang Guowei returned to Beijing, he heard his old friend Jin Liang and Pu Yi's father-in-law (Wanrong's father) Rong Yuan talk about Sheng and Luo's "clique formation".He was afraid that Luo's family would be "furious" if he knew about it, and he was afraid that his in-laws would be slandered, so he wrote a letter to persuade Luo to change "Zou" to "Letter". appropriate. This was out of good intentions, but Roche was very unhappy.

For the above two matters, a "suspicion" has been planted between Luo and Wang. The "letter of renunciation" issued by Luo Shi due to Qianming's funeral is "frozen three feet, not a day's cold". As far as the relationship between Luo and Wang is concerned, until Qianming became seriously ill, it should be said that Mrs. Pan and Luo Zhai's mother-in-law got along relatively well, and they always cared about the eldest daughter-in-law.Therefore, Wang Dongming (the eldest daughter of Wang Guowei) disagreed that her mother, Mrs. Pan, handled the aftermath improperly, and believed that this was an unfounded "conjecture"; Luo and Wang's misunderstanding due to Qian Ming's funeral led to the breakup of friendship, "rather, it was accidental events are more reasonable."At that time, Ms. Wang Dongming was also in her teens, and she could still remember the scene at that time, saying: My father loves my eldest brother the most, and my eldest brother died of illness, which was a deep blow to my father. Secretly took the elder sister back to her natal home, the father said angrily, "I can't even support a daughter-in-law?" Then he remitted all the medical expenses of the eldest brother when he was sick to Luo's family, they sent it back, and the father sent it again, and so on twice, Father was so angry that he could not speak. He took out a stack of letters from the study, tore them up and set them on fire.I went closer to have a look, and saw on the letter paper that it said: Guantang relatives, family and friends (have) said... But Roche's "Letter of Resignation" and some other letters have been preserved intact.Wang Dongming was deeply moved after reading the "Letter of Breaking Up Friendship", and said: Any sentence hurts people's self-esteem, and it is beyond the tolerance of ordinary people. It also made me think of the letters burned by my father, there should be more than this.Judging from father's letters to Luo Shi, they were all tactful and modest, seeking perfection with humiliation, and no one was found to speak ill of each other.I often imagined that if the two of them did not break up, the father could get the comfort and comfort of his best friend when he was sad, and he could get persuasion and vent when he was confused, and maybe he could dispel his death ambitions, pull and push, and the result would be unreasonable. When the misunderstanding happened, Luo Zhenyu returned to Tianjin first with his beloved daughter Xiaochun.Although Wang Guowei was extremely embarrassed, he still thought it was only a temporary phenomenon. Therefore, while properly handling Qianming's funeral, he also tried his best to arrange the future life of his eldest daughter-in-law. He did two things: first, establish an heir.Since he had no future, he decided to adopt his second son, Gao Ming's eldest son, Qing Duan. The second is widowhood.Handling Qianming's customs pension and other leftovers, entrusted Jin Songqing, an old friend in Shanghai, to remit all the money to Luo's family in Tianjin through the bank. On October 24, 1926, Wang Guowei wrote to Luo Zhenyu: "Wei was not virtuous, and the sky sent a murderer, so there was a change last month. Yu Wei is a son-in-law, Yu Gong is a loving son-in-law, mourning death rather than living. Parents The hearts of each other are the same. It is a misunderstanding if there is no picture in the middle, but this misunderstanding will clear itself up after a long time, so after the tenth day of Weichu, we will not meet each other again, leaving it as a place where we meet in different places, and the words are lost." He also said: "On the eighth day of the lunar new year, I was in Shanghai. I once asked Brother Songqing to remit the money left by the deceased son to the public office, and asked the public to act as Ling Ai's manager. Now I have received a letter from him, and the amount of silver has been changed to 2,423 yuan in foreign silver. Huijin, you should be able to receive it now. The total amount paid by Ling Ai for collection is 577 yuan (206 yuan and 50 yuan for bracelet exchange, 226 yuan and 50 yuan for customs payment, and one month's salary. One hundred and forty-three), which is now remitted by Beijing Continental Bank. This five hundred and seventy-seven yuan and the previous Shanghai money have a total of three thousand yuan in foreign currency. Please dispose of it with full authority, because Wei has not asked for help in these matters. Familiar, and the capital is not a good place, so it must be placed in a more suitable place, and the dead man should be grateful underground." In the letter, Wang Guowei expressed his desire to resolve the misunderstanding, and remitted money to Luo Zhenyu, and expressed his sincerity with compromising phrases such as "asking the public to act as Lingmei's manager" and "asking the public to handle it with full authority". Wang Guowei also sent his servant Feng You to Tianjin to deliver the Qianming couple's furniture brought back from Shanghai to Luo Zhai. However, when Feng You returned from Tianjin, he brought with him a rejection letter from Roche.Luo Zhenyu returned the money in the name of her daughter. Not reconciled, Wang Guowei sent another letter to Luo Zhenyu on October 25, still begging Luo to accept the money, saying: "It's unreasonable for Lingmei to declare that she doesn't need any money. If the deceased man's money does not go to Lingmei, who should return it? I still ask you to tell me the truth. We are all old, and Lingmei will be long in the future. I need to save this money for preparation. Of course. After the Beijing payment is delivered, please deposit it together with the Shanghai payment, hand over the original copy or temporarily store it on your behalf, and that is the end of the matter, there is no beginning or end." Luo Zhenyu still didn't appreciate it, and returned the money again.Being rejected again and again, Wang Guowei felt that his most valued personality had been insulted. He was too angry to speak.Daughter Wang Zhenming saw her father take out a stack of letters from the study, tore them up and set them on fire.Wang Zhenming went closer to take a look, and saw that the letter on the letter read: Guantang's in-laws have a good family... On October 31, he wrote to Luo Zhenyu again, saying: "The money left by the deceased child should be deposited in the name of Lingmei. Otherwise, it is okay to use 'Wang Zai Ji' as the old bank deposits. This money is in Principles and laws are, of course, the things of your aunt, and no other discussion is allowed. The deceased son has been married to your aunt for more than eight years, and during that time, the kindness and righteousness have not been lacking. Such a refusal of his bequest? Ruoyun backs down, giving up what should not be given. If the recipient is not accepted, how can he not be the recipient? It is contempt for the personality of others. Contempt for the personality of others is also true for one’s own personality. Loss. In short, this matter cannot be justified by reason, so I ask you to give it to me with righteousness. I ask you to deposit this money in the name of Lingmei, and hand over the deposit to Qianyuan. If it is difficult to reason for a while, please temporarily ask for it save." It wasn't until this time that Luo Zhenyu accepted the money and wrote back: "I plan to save two thousand yuan for my heir's future wedding tuition, and there is no other way to deal with the remaining thousand yuan. I will return with peace of mind and live up to the trust of the public." .” Even so, the knot between the two has not been opened. On Luo Zhenyu's 60th birthday in early August 1925, Wang Guowei made a special trip to Tianjin to celebrate his birthday and wrote a poem to congratulate him.Unexpectedly, in just one year, the relationship between the two has undergone such a drastic change. This incident undoubtedly left a huge shadow in Wang Guowei's heart. Half a year later, Luo Zhenyu received the sad news of the death of his in-laws, went to Beijing to manage the funeral, and published a posthumous book for him in Tianjin, it seems that he felt this painfully.Looking back on the past in his later years, Luo Shi once said to his grandchildren in his study "Lu Shitang": Jing'an repays her confidant with death, I owe Jing'an, and Jing'an does not fail me. On the day of Wang Guowei's death, his aunt and nephew, Zhao Wanli, an assistant professor at the Tsinghua Research Institute, sent a telegram to Luo Zhenyu in Tianjin: "The teacher sank himself in the Summer Palace this morning, begging to play on his behalf." His son went to Beijing for the funeral. According to a letter from Wang Guowei's third son, Zhenming, who worked in the office of the Tsinghua Research Institute, to his second brother Gao Ming, the deacon at the Shanghai Post Office, it was revealed that Robben planned to come to Beijing Tsinghua Garden in person. "I am afraid that he will feel something or change when he comes here, so I refuse to let him come to Beijing." Later, Luo Zhenyu wrote a legacy to Puyi on Wang Guowei's behalf, and Puyi decreed that Wang Guowei was bestowed with the posthumous title "Zhongyi".In fact, this will is Luo Zhenyu's gratitude for his friendship with Wang Guowei, and he feels very guilty about the estrangement between the two. The four sons imitated Wang Guowei's handwriting and made a "remain".Luo Zhenyu also set up a coffin of "Mr. Zhongkui" in the Japanese Garden of the Japanese Concession in Tianjin, and invited Chinese and Japanese celebrities and scholars to pay homage to him. "End of the festival" and "the prosperity of kindness is unprecedented in Zhengu". After the public sacrifice, Luo Zhenyu went to Beijing immediately to participate in handling funeral affairs. With Puyi's "edict", he received a reward of 2,000 yuan from the Beijing Office of the Qing Dynasty, and handed it all to Wang Guowei's wife, Mrs. Pan. Thousands of dollars. From every point of view, the love of thirty years of friendship is not lost. According to their father's wishes, Wang Guowei's family and children bought a plot of land seven rooms outside Tsinghua University for burial without asking a feng shui master to choose a grave, and did not choose "auspicious days". The "posthumous title" given by Emperor Xuantong to Wang Zhongxigong was written, and trees were planted around the cemetery." Since then, Luo Zhenyu has presided over the proofreading, editing and publishing of Wang Guowei's posthumous works, and has divided his published and unpublished works into four volumes, and published them under the title of "The Posthumous Letters of Duke Wang Zhongkui of Haining", doing his part to the deceased. camaraderie.
