In 1949, Qian Mu left the mainland and took refuge in Hong Kong Island. Although he avoided the catastrophe of "thought reform", he also paid the price of being far away from his homeland and abandoning his wife and children. According to Yu Yingshi's recollection, when Qian Mu first came to Hong Kong, he and Yu Yingshi's family watched a movie about parent-child relationship. Qian Mu, who has always been able to "control love with reason", couldn't help but think of his children in mainland China, and quietly shed tears.Traditional Chinese culture places a lot of emphasis on the relationship between father and son, and Qian Mu, who is now middle-aged and has believed in traditional Chinese culture all his life, can imagine his loneliness.

Yu Yingshi recalled: One year during the summer vacation, Hong Kong was extremely hot, and he (Qian Mu) suffered from a serious gastric ulcer, and he lay alone on the floor of an empty classroom to recuperate. When I went to see him, I felt really sorry for him.I asked him, is there anything I can do for you?He said: I want to read Wang Yangming's anthology.I went to the Commercial Press and bought one for him. When I came back, he was still lying on the floor of the classroom alone. It seemed that New Asia College was completely empty. Qian Mu shouted "warmth and respect for history" and almost radically defended traditional culture, which was not tolerated by various radical forces. Therefore, the communists and liberals at that time regarded him as a remnant of feudalism, and attacked and blocked him in unison. Therefore, after the founding of the People's Republic of China, Qian Mu's works were banned until the reform and opening up, and there was the move of Hu Shi, a liberal who has always advertised "tolerance", to ban Qian Mu from entering the "Academia Sinica".In addition, most of Qian Mu's fans are not his ideal readers, because Qian Mu's hard work all his life is to summon the soul of his motherland and cultivate readers who have faith in traditional Chinese culture. But in reality, most readers are far from faith. Chinese culture is still far away. Therefore, as a conservative, Qian Mu is doomed to be lonely. Therefore, Yu Yingshi of Qian Mu said with a sigh that "Mr. Qian undoubtedly left this world with deep disappointment".

In 1978, Qian Mu had a severe attack of eye disease due to macular degeneration, which made him unable to see and read normally. He underwent surgery three times. After half a year of recuperation, there was no significant effect.Later, with the help of his wife Hu Meiqi, Mr. Qian Mu began to write by dictation. After being visually impaired, with the assistance of Hu Meiqi, Qian Mu still successively published "History and Culture Essays", "Chinese Nationality and Chinese Culture from the Perspective of Chinese History", "General History of China Reference Materials", "Eighty Memories of Parents", Works such as Miscellaneous Memories of Teachers and Friends, Three Books on Song Dynasty Studies, and Essays.

Qian Mu had a few mild strokes in his later years, and he was too old to travel abroad. Therefore, he was eagerly looking forward to seeing his eldest daughter, Qian Yi Neng, who teaches at Tsinghua University, in Taiwan. Liang Shiqiu passed away at the end of 1987. The regret that the eldest daughter Liang Wenqian could not go to see her father off aroused public outrage. In November 1988, Taiwan announced the regulations on visiting relatives for funerals. When the measures were announced, Qian Yi, who was on an academic visit in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, applied to go to Taiwan that month, becoming the first mainlander to visit relatives in Taiwan since the two sides separated for 40 years.Qian Mu was excited and gratified to be able to have a family reunion with his daughter outside Shuangxi. It's just that when the aged Qian Mu heard his daughter detailing the changes in the scenery of his hometown, he couldn't help saying sadly: "I'm afraid I won't be able to go back in this life."

Qian Mu once said that he hoped that his daughter’s trip to Taiwan would be a pure and quiet journey. However, the DPP revealed that Qian Yi concealed his official status as a Communist Party member when he applied for Taiwan, and asked the KMT government to deal with it immediately; Qian Yi was also taught at the National University. Reported her participation in a "rebel organization" defined by Taiwan.Chen Shui-bian even accused Qian Yi of being a member of the Communist Youth League, causing an uproar.Although Qian Mu's father and daughter said to treat these untrue claims with a normal mind, the tree wanted to be quiet but the wind continued. The Sushu Building was full of turmoil, and some people wanted to sue Qian Mu for "not reporting the bandit". The series of turmoil made the Qian family restless. .Although Taiwan's "High Prosecutor's Office" decided not to prosecute the relevant charges at the end of 1988, Qian Yi could only leave Taiwan sadly, hoping that the controversy would end here. The aging Qian Mu said sadly: "These people have completely abandoned Chinese cultural traditions, they don't recognize the family relationship between father and daughter, and they can't understand why his daughter came to visit her father from such a far away place."

Later, because Chen Shuibian and others accused Qian Mu of the property rights of the Sushu Building where Qian Mu lived, Qian Mu angrily moved out of the Sushu Building.Suffering from eye disease, Qian Mu was unable to go out when he moved, and he was reluctant to talk and eat too much. His memory was obviously declining. He only hoped that his children could go to Taiwan to get together before his death. But God did not obey people’s wishes. On August 30, 1990, Qian Mu, a master of Chinese studies, passed away in his new apartment on Hangzhou South Road after his 96th birthday, just over three months after he moved out of Sushu Building.
